Re: FIRST Championship in Snapchat

One of my friends made this 2015 Champs-themed background for Snapchat and plans on sending it in to them. She's too shy to post it herself but she gave me permission to share it with the world, since I think it's pretty cool.

The transparent part of the image would be where the photo would be. It's easier to see on this black background.

You forgot the noodle!

Seriously though, looks really cool!

It would probably be better to have a sublte FIRST logo than something that doesn't brand us that takes up most of the screen. Like it though!

From what I understand, Snapchat doesn't allow specific logos or images that have copyrights (such as the FIRST logo) unless the individual submitting the background owns them.

And Jay, I've heard that the noodle doesn't look the best. :o

This is a great idea, and hope snapchat allows this!

I sent in a geofilter for SVR, just to see what would happen. Request got denied. May have been that I had sent it in too late, or may have been for other reasons. Hopefully, with Champs being such a big event, they'll allow it to go through (perhaps with the support of FIRST HQ). (below is what I sent, sans the black background and with some other text)

Re: FIRST Championship in Snapchat

MY LETTER TO SNAPCHAT, DO GIVE A READ:

Hello Snapchat YOU PEOPLE SHOULD READ THIS,
My name is LeVell Smith. I am a adamant user of your application. I have recently been very satisfied with the content on the live section, for example your coachella feed and march madness feed. Well I am apart of FIRST robotics 340. Now you're probably asking what FIRST even is, well its a program to get kids of all ages interested in STEM and STEM based careers. The program gets kids separated into 4 levels , based on age, where they are able to build robots of all sorts to complete a new game they hand out each year. For the program I'm in, The First Robotics Competition, our task this year was to design a robot to stack sets of totes and recycling cans and place them on a "step" to earn points. After six weeks of hard building, teams go out and perform at competitions globally for the chance to go to the world championship at St. Louis, Missouri. All the teams worldwide have worked hard and eventually 600 teams make it for the chance to be WORLD CHAMPIONS. So you might be asking, "why does this pertain to me", well my good snapchat friends here is why, from my personal experience i see the way that kids in FIRST are a changed group of youth in this society. This is mostly due to the great, positive spirit the FIRST program provides. The kids that are involved in FIRST are the future of our society, so why wouldn't we want to get more kids involved? Well wouldn't it be a MAGNIFICENT opportunity to show what the hype of the championship is on SNAPCHAT LIVE STORIES!!! A big group of students have already sent you suggestions about this, because we want to spread the FIRST experience with all that we can! I think i can speak for everyone in the FIRST world by saying this program has GREATLY impacted our lives! So in all snapchat, we are just here to say give FIRST and the students a chance to portray what we have done, and how are next generation will be just as successful as our elders before us. Thank you so much for your time and consideration!
Sincerely,
LeVell Smith and the FIRST community.

(P.S. stay on the look for my mixtape it's Fire bruh)

I made my submission to Snapchat feedback about this. It couldn't hurt, right?

If FIRST really wants to get the word out there, this is a fantastic way to do it.

I have a feeling that most of the snapchat live events pay to get their event featured. That being said, I sent in a feedback form anyway, also reminding them that by increasing STEM education, they would have more computer scientists to recruit down the road. Like Dan said, it can't hurt...

Re: FIRST Championship in Snapchat

bump. Snapchat now has an "On Demand" geofilter option that allows businesses and the like to pay for a filter over a designated area for a designated time. I did a cost approximation for the dome in St. Louis only and it came out to around $17,000 haha. Needless to say, thats a cost that can't be covered by one team alone. Maybe we can get FIRST HQ on this though?

Sperkowsky 03-04-2016 23:56

Or we can get snapchat to do it for free. I have the Ceos email don't ask why I'll email him tomorrow.

Anyone get this to happen for this year? Even if we don't get a live story a first stronghold filter would be cool.

I did talk to some of my contacts at Twitter. Essentially First HQ could most likely get it for free because of their not for profit status but, they are much too late now unless of course its happening.
I did email FIRST but did not get a reply.

I don't know about a general Championship Snapchat filter, but my team purchased Geofilters that will be located at the Innovation Faire/Scholarship Row on Thursday and Friday! They will feature our Safety and You Go Girl programs, and we'd love for people to use them. Additionally, we will have tee shirts and a cash prize for those who send us (Sc: team1710 Twitter: @Ravonics1710) the best photos with the filters. They're designed to be a lighthearted way to show other teams what we do and to show non-FIRSTers that we have a lot of fun as "robotics nerds."

I hope people like these, and I hope that general FIRST Snapchat filters work out this year. I know that my team learned a lot about them by purchasing our own, so maybe we can help FIRST with that process next year.

See what our filters look like here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7...DdEMDhNR3dHbms
