Do game pieces have to be on the ground at the end of autonomous?

I just watched Quarterfinal match 3 in the Virginia and all 3 robots had cans in their possession, but didn't put them on the ground, but they still got points. I thought the rule was the robot couldn't be holding them, but I've also heard it's so rare that the judges are giving points anyway. What is the general trend?

Cans don't have to be.

A CONTAINER SET exists if any three (3) RECYCLING CONTAINERS are fully contained by the AUTO ZONE at the end of AUTO.
A STACKED TOTE SET exists if all three (3) Yellow TOTES from an ALLIANCE are arranged such that, at the end of AUTO:
A. the Yellow TOTES are stacked one on top of another in a single column,
B. only the bottom-most Yellow TOTE is in contact with carpet in the AUTO ZONE,
C. the entire structure is fully contained by the AUTO ZONE, and
D. the entire structure is free of contact from ROBOTS

They thought that at L.A. too, at least the announcer did. He was subsequently corrected--see Navid's quote of the rules.

BTW, the judges can't give points. The referees can. There is a difference--blue polos vs. black-and-white stripes.

Ah, yes. Referees, not judges.

Only the Tote STACK (not set) has to be on the ground. Everything else (including the robot) just has to be between the lines.

So, if the robot is still carrying the STACK, it can score as a Set.

Also, points will never be awarded differently just because something is rare.

A lot of teams still don't understand the concept of fully contained. Even if it's in the air, if the handle of the Can overlaps the auto line, it doesn't score.
