Best landfill bots

What are some good landfill-oriented robots this year? Obviously 1114 and 987, but who else scores at a high level from the landfill? Most of the robots I've seen are better in the HP station than the landfill.

Re: Best landfill bots

We don't "score at a high level", in large part because we have almost no ability to manipulate the recycling container, but we are pretty effective at scoring totes from the landfill, hitting two stacks of four (or a stack of five and three) pretty consistently by the end of our event. With a bit of CG adjustment and software tuning for our next event, two stacks of five should be easy for us, and hopefully we'll get more. We waste a lot of time getting totes lined up with our hooks and can't drive very well with a full stack of 5 at this point.

I'll try and get some video up soon. The key to being a good landfill robot this year is to have really prototyped the crap out of intake. Two wheels on sticks that they can grab totes won't cut it. We had a team spend three weeks of build season finding the perfect wheel material, arrangement, and geometry to intake totes at any angle. Totes nearly perpendicular to the robot can be spun into the right orientation if you get it right.

Re: Best landfill bots

We can do either. Competing in Ventura this week and SD next...just as fast LF as HP.

The Achilles of a majority of teams regardless of HP or LF design is that they have to place themselves perfectly(wasting time)...we built our bot to be able to manipulate any object in any orientation... with an adjustable Pneumatic stable fork max height and Omni H drive. So LF is no issue can grab any two totes either direction or upside down one (maybe two)... and HP as long as we are there we can easily stack and control totes out chute door. Same time to build any stack from either...and HP load RC's to top on side or standing.

We'll see how that translates this weekend on a real field. It should do well based on past events I viewed of other bots and practice.

I am in awe of 1114...by far best bot. Outstanding for a single bot engineering wise blew my mind.

I would not say we are LF oriented rather Field oriented. Should be fun.

We also have a similar problem, in that we lack the ability to score RC's quickly, but by the semifinals at TVR we could easily make 3 stacks of 4 out of the landfill, with about 50 seconds left over to try and cap one. I believe if we kept going at that speed we could have made at least 1 maybe 2 more. (We were making stacks of 4 because that was the most our alliance partners could cap for us).

For Worlds we hope make modifications to make capping our own stacks much more efficient.

Our team The Bit Buckets, 4183, just outdid themselves by winning the Arizona East regional. Two capped stacks of four plus whatever work needed in the last 40 seconds.

And our robot is made of laser-cut plywood.

Your team has been exciting to watch! I have been keenly interested, since you built the only other independent sliding tote holders I have seen this year. It was fantastic to see your success yesterday! I sure hope we can duplicate that in Denver next week.

I also want to give a shout out to our fellow CIR winning alliance partners in 1756. Their intake is incredible and makes them very capable in the land of staggered totes as well.

More "scared" of Beach Bots 330 (best local bot I've seen at 90+ pts solo by far) in terms of "scare factor"... they'll set the top bar going into Ventura. Be very impressed if 1717 can improve to around that level. Beach Bots don't like to lose more than most as evidenced with 12 Regional Championships, and their blue paint on our bot from last year. That was fun.

But they are HP loading bot..so for this discussion not a factor.

If you do find match videos, try to find the elimination matches of it. My brother (driver) was still getting used to the systems speed since our prototype robot was a bit slower than our final. He was really in the zone by elimination matches. One of the things we plan to improve for Chesapeake is to add a system to allow us to be stable with 6 totes at a decent speed. The only issue is our can manipulator isn't fast enough to do what we want, so we tend to rely on other team to cap and focus on stacking like a crazy. (+1 for 540 who did a fantastic job capping our alliances stack, we were so happy you were able to assemble the perfect alliance).

Part of the reason for that is that it is fully autonomous, up until this point it's been too fast for it's own good, but they finally have it to the point where they can hold onto it's stacks long enough for them to place it on the scoring platform.

Matches 57 and 62 are the ones of note. Match 57 shows us stacking 2 stacks of 6 and one of 5 without bins. For match 62 we were able to stack two stacks of 6 with a bin after adding a tab that stopped the bin from sliding forwards, but the bin wasn't pushed far enough back for the tab to snap into place for the first stack, and therefore we lost the bin.

As for eliminations, we were having brownout issues that first match, which led to latency problems which caused us to lose our first stack and almost lose our second stack (after losing the bin on top.... again...).

368 will be unveiling their robot on the field during Week 5 Hawaii.
Only the driver can prevent their robot from doing 3 capped 6-stacks from the landfill with time to spare.:)
With a smooth running swerve again, it makes being a landfill stacker that much more effective. They drop off stacks sideways like 1114 to cut down on the time to drop off capped stacks.
Being that this is their 1st event, I'm sure whatever bugs they may have will be solved by Saturday afternoon come eliminations.
They also orient cans up and down while driving.

Self-righteous, maybe, but I would like to throw TechFire 225 into this discussion. We're purpose built for the landfill, and in week 3 at Springside-Chestnut hill we consistently made a little over two three-stacks with cans. We also scored 20 in auton a couple times and made the co-op stack. Right now in practice we're making about two six-stacks with cans (or the equivalent in points).

Due to what I believe was a dead cell, the logs showed that the battery was under 9v for the entire match, that's why the driving was slow and twitchy.

First off, I'd like to say thank you to those who nominated us on this list. But I'd like to say that this is a list for the BEST landfill bots. We are good, but not to the tier of say 2056 or 987. We have a lot of things to improve to get to that level, but we have 2 weeks to correct our mistakes and flaws before Chesapeake.

Next I'd like to make my nomination for this list. 2481 is in my opinion, our robot but much more perfected. A beautifully programmed and driven swerve drive, an extremely quick elevator, and extremely quick "extendo arms" for co-oping make this robot an extremely strong contender for the position of best. Not to mention their simple can manipulator. Since the second I saw the original video, I have held the belief that this robot is Einstein worthy, and will more than likely top their past years performance. With a few modifications between now and World's, I think they can be on Simbotics's currently lonely tier. They currently are at least tied with 2056 and 1519, who I believe are definitely some of the best landfill bots.

Wow. Thanks a ton for that very high level of praise. Very much appreciated, to say the least. We're definitely motivated to keep grasping for that bar that the Canadian super-duo keep collectively setting and raising for outstanding landfill play. We have some improvements we've been working on for St. Louis, for sure.

Also, I've gotta give another shout out to 118, who've been able to solve the 3 stacks riddle out of the landfill this past week in Sacramento. They're also doing their own part to raise the performance bar for munching through the tote mosaic, as well. Inspiring job, as always, guys!

Nothing against 71, while their robot is indeed (literally) the beast, they're limited to 4 high stacks and at least from what I could see (as the scorekeeper operating FMS), their intake seemed a little bit inconsistent (the hooks seemed to miss a decent amount of the time). 1720 IIRC has the capability of going for 6 high and was doing pretty consistent 5 stacks. The one thing 71 has an edge on is the ability to canburgle at least during teleop, although that mechanism still seemed a bit wonky (although knowing them, this will be improved for state champs).

71 does four at a time for the first cap. They do (or at least try) 5 totes of stack the second stack (if they managed to successfully canburglar a bin off the step). Best described in steps:

1. After auto, grab four totes from landfill, stack, then cap.
2. Grab another four, stack.
3. While having the tote mechanism facing towards the stack, drop the canburglar mechanism, and grab a bin off the step through the noodle opening.
4. Grab one more tote, then stack it on the uncapped four-tote stack (turning it into a five-tote stack).
5. Attempt to cap the perpendicular bin on the stack.

I'm hesistant on calling 71 the best landfill bot in IN, but I was impressed by what I saw at Purdue. I'm glad they are back to swerve again for this season. It's never 71 without the swerve...

So, for those of you not watching the Indiana districts...

The best landfill bots in Indiana so far would be 71, 868, and 1720 in no particular order, but let's face it... they don't hold a torch up to some of the robots mentioned in the thread. 71 still has to work out their issues of being able to cap 5 totes (placing recycling bins sideways, and they fall off) and being able to stack after their first initial capped stack of four. 868 was mostly working at Purdue, but bins ended up being their downfall again. 1720 was limited to one single stack of 6 totes for the entire match. Granted, it's enough to be considered tops in Indiana, but their elevator needs to go much, much faster.

4982 is close behind after improvements at Kokomo. They lag far behind all the other teams mentioned in production, but they can stack well enough to be a viable second pick.

868 has potential to be the best, but there's just too many issues so far that are holding them back, namely the recycling bins. Two that stand out the most are difficulty getting bins to stay upright while traveling upwards in 868's elevator to the "bin holder" on top and their inability to control tipped containers. My gut instinct tells me that they are fixable issues, though, and I'm sure we'll see a much improved version at the state championships.

Ah, I see. As scorekeeper I seldom see end play (as that's spent eyeballing the time to manually kill the scorebar :D ). Noted.

Agreed, 868 had a lot of potential but too many felled recycling containers.
