Chairman's Videos for 2015

Hi All,

So I see every year that the Championship videos are generally pretty good for Chairman's. I think a lot of teams don't put enough effort into their videos to be really competitive at Championship.

With that in mind, does anyone have a collection of the nicest Chairman's videos for 2015? I like to see when teams take real pride and put effort into what is generally considered an afterthought for some teams.

A couple I liked from this year:

2614 MARS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxkejxIH2LE

3132 Thunder Down Under (From Australia!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkmVYwmHm_4 - this has to be my favourite so far...

1710 PRO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QreXTm0h3j4

Please share more videos!

I totally agree that there are usually a limited amount of impressive chairman's videos, but you have to note that the videos aren't judged so many teams wont put as much effort.

From the PNW, a couple of good ones come to mind, 1540's and 4911's. Nothing revolutionary, but they put in a great deal of effort and it does show.

I don't have links right now, but I'll update this post when I get the chance to find them.

That's a fair point - I guess I just see the video as symbolic more than anything - if you take pride in the video, it says a lot about the attitude of the team towards every aspect and detail.

I feel the award is very broadly judged at a championships level, and the video might actually have more weight than people think. That being said... I could be dead wrong :P

The video is part of the judging this year according to Awards section of the Admin manual.

Quote:

6.4.3.4
Interview Process and VIDEO RequirementTeams submitting for the Chairman’s Award must provide a VIDEO to the judges at the start of their Chairman’s Award interview. The
content of the video should explain what the team has done to earn the Chairman’s Award. The video content may be in the team’s
native language, but if that language is not English, the team must add English subtitles to be eligible for the Chairman’s Award at
any event in the US or Canada, or at any non-US or Canadian event at which their native language is not generally spoken. The video
may be shown to the judges during the team’s seven (7) minute presentation time or the team can choose to not show the video
during the presentation time. Even if the video is NOT shown during the interview, a VIDEO must still be provided to the Judges in
order for the team to be considered for the Chairman’s Award. In addition, the team must provide the equipment for viewing (i.e.
laptop/speakers etc.) the video. Teams who do not submit a VIDEO to the judges will not be considered eligible for the Chairman’s
Award and will not be interviewed by the judges. This is applicable at all events including the
FIRST
Championship

The way I interpreted that section of the manual is that you are required to provide it as part of your submission, but it fails to mention whether its quality will affect the chance that a team will be awarded chairman's.

I am quick to admit that the chairman's video is tough. 27 knocked it out of the park last year, an engaging video that wasn't purely testimonials. Otherwise it is hard to make the chairman's video unique. Making it a judged part of a teams submission seems a bit harsh. Every team can easily find writers with good technical skills in English and a computer. Cinematographers are not as easy to come by, the barrier for entry is a lot higher, and the technical skills are of similar difficulty but not many people start filming as early as they start writing; I know that too well.

TL;DR: Videos are hard and they shouldn't be a part of the judging process.

That's what I think is so good about 3132's video this year. It's really differnt from anything I've seen before from a team.

Their video again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkmVYwmHm_4

Vulcan Robotics (1218) has a beautiful Chairman's Award video that I can't find at the moment.

I know it's my team's video, but I think you guys will definitely like it and we're proud of it:
Team 2974: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nnt7a7JgLBE
We won at the Orlando Regional this year.

Re: Chairman's Videos for 2015

First of all, thank you for mentioning our video!! My video team was very honored, and I am certainly very proud of them. It is definitely the best one we have produced so far, and I couldn't have been prouder to see it on the jumbo-tron at Pittsburgh!

Clarification: The video is required for submission, but it is not judged. The judges are not required to watch it, as its primary purpose is for showing when the team wins Chairmans. That being said, if a judge does see it, it certainly can help or hinder their perception of your team.

Here is our video! We just won at AZ West and thought I would share in the thread. Little background, the theme of Dragon Robotics 2375 this year was "How we train our dragons", with our robot, Toothless. Our team has 4 colors, each symbolizing what makes up our team; Green-Engineering & Design, Purple-Image & Inspiration, Pink- Sustainability, and White-Collaboration and sharing.

On a different note: Does anyone know where we post/how we post a link to FIRST after a win, to get it on the FIRST page. I know we are supposed to submit, but not sure how.

Re: Chairman's Videos for 2015

First, thanks for the shout out (1710) - we're lucky enough to have a subteam of students who are passionate and interested in video production.

One video that REALLY stood out to me (although it was already mentioned) was 2974, who won RCA at Orlando this year.

Team 2468, Team Appreciate, also has a pretty good Chairman's video.

The Championship Chairman's recipient from last year, 27 Team Rush put together an amazing video, but I would also suggest that anyone interested also check out 1114 Simbotics' Championship-winning video from 2012, and some of the other Chairman's Award resources that 1114 has produced.

I know it is my teams video, but we are very proud of every thing that we do and our students worked very hard on everything Chairman's. Here is a link to our 2015 Chairman's video.
FRC Team 708, Hatters Robotics, won the District Chairman's award at Springside Chestnut Hill during week 3 and just won one of the two Regional Chairman's awards at the Mid-Atlantic Robotics Regional Championships. Congratulations to all of the other teams that have won Regional Chairman's this year and good luck to everyone competing in St. Louis!
