College / Career Advice

Student on team #217, Royal Fusion, from Armada High Schools and Ford Motor Company. Greetings! As a graduating High School Senior I've got a fairly big life decision ahead of me in picking a college (I believe I have it narrowed down to Purdue or Virginia Tech), but that aside I also have the -bigger- choice of what to do with the rest of my life. And to be honest at this point, its pretty much all up in the air for me. Besides FIRST, I'm involved in so many other things, that the list of things that interest me or I enjoy doing is so large its no help trying to narrow things down. So, in the spirit the 'Career' forum I'm asking everyone out there for some input. What fields in everyone in, and where do you think that field is going? Also, what helped influence you to pick the major/field you did? Like I said, I'm really still open to just about anything right now, and would like ANY advice that those who have been through this can give me, as all I know right now is I plan to be involved with FIRST as long as I'm still breathing, no matter WHAT I decide to do. Thanks a TON guys! Eric Gargus Team Macomb #217 egargus@sprynet.com |
EE for me

Engineer on team #190, Gompei, from Mass Academy of Math and Science and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In Reply to: College / Career Advice Posted by Eric Gargus on 04/09/2001 6:22 PM EST: While I'm not sure what I'm going to be doing once I graduate from WPI, I'm pretty sure that the whole electrical engineering thing is what's for me.. After doing FIRST in high school, I'd decided that engineering is what I wanted to do.. But it wasn't until going to a bunch of open houses listening to the professors talk that I decided on the flavor of electrical.. Now being at the theoretical half-way point of my college time, I'm not sure at all what I'm going to do once I'm done here.. With EE, I don't absolutely love it yet, but I don't hate it either.. But I'm not totally worried about that right now.. Though I probably should be.. I'm just trying to focus on the now of things.. Step 1: pass my classes for this term.. Step 2: find a job for the summer.. I've still got a couple years before I need to even think about going out into the "real world" and that's how I'm treating it.. If you've got any questions and such, feel free to ask.. You know how to contact me.. But for now, back to work.. T190 XO Kate |

Student on team #401, The Hokie G.U.A.R.D, from Virginia Tech/MCPS and Virginia Tech/VBEP. In Reply to: College / Career Advice Posted by Eric Gargus on 04/09/2001 6:22 PM EST: Yo, Scott England, VT student in Engineering Science and Mechanics (concentration in biomechanics, minor in math) and a mentor on team 401 Montgomery County Public Schools and Virginia Tech (soon to be many more sponsors I'm told) I applied and was accepted to UVA, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, 3 factors made my decision easy. # 1 tour all the campuses, I was not pleased with UVA when I tourned it (walked around for 4 hours, didn't see a single person smile and there seemed to be no organization to the campus) Georgia Tech was nice, but that's out of state tuition for me and I wouldn't want to go to school in Atlanta Virginia Tech has the most beautiful campus by far, a very good school of engineering, in state tuition for me, and what was one of the most major influences, Jeff Seaton and John Evans, two of the major mentors on team 122 (my high school team, Jeff was also an MC at the VCU regional and nationals) are Virginia Tech graduates. One nice thing I'll say about VT that I'm not sure how common it is in engineering departments nationwide, all freshmen in engineering start as General Engineers, and after taking the infamous EF (engineering fundamentals, weeds out the first 40 %) and seeing what each type of engineer would do, students can then transfer into any of Tech's 11 engineering departments http://www.eng.vt.edu/ While making up your mind, I'd definitely say check out the websites of both schools, and tour the campuses if possible ~Scott |

Coach on team #639, Red B^2, from Ithaca High School and Cornell University. In Reply to: College / Career Advice Posted by Eric Gargus on 04/09/2001 6:22 PM EST: In the 5th grade, I knew I wanted to be a CS major. I was basically a CS freak all the way through high school and still am a little bit today. However, last summer I realized that CS was not what I wanted to do -- professionally. I am really interested in the field, but I could not do it every day as a profession. For me, it seems too repetitive and not to exciting. I had a job last summer in the field and was bored out of my mind. Just recently, I realized that mechanical engineering is much closer to what I wanted to do. With mechanical engineering, you won't necessarily ever be doing the same type of project twice, and you constantly get to work on different things. I do not know what type of job I will end up, but whatever it is, I know I will enjoy what I am doing. My advice is to pay very careful attention to your instinct. I kept on telling myself for the longest time that CS was for me, but all along I knew in my gut that I was more interested in mechanical engineering.
