Michigan State Championship

Congratulations to over 100 teams that have qualified for the 2015 MSC! I cannot wait until competition, and I am sure that many of you are the same way.

I wanted to let all of you know that event information is now posted at
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...5InSksJkc/edit
The pits are a very nice size at either 9x10 or 8x11, with no Chairman's award displays.

I look forward to seeing all of you compete!

Good luck!

Sorry that your team won't be there, but thank you for volunteering! We couldn't have a competition without you and many other fantastic volunteers! :p

857 is excited to be attending, but I'm a little disappointed that our sister team 2586 might not have made the cutoff. There are also several well-known teams that I'm surprised won't be at MSC (like 74 Team CHAOS and 51 The Wings of Fire).

But I can't wait to head to Grand Rapids on Wednesday!

In past years there was a separate area for little chairman's award pits, but these (thankfully, in my opinion) will not be there this year

I was pretty shocked to see that as well, especially considering 74's performance last season. A pretty good team from our area, 3767, didn't make the cutoff either.

It should be one very exciting district championship

Yeah, 74 really suffered performance-wise at Kentwood. If they could have only counted their 2nd and 3rd district events, they probably would have made MSC.

Does anyone know how MSC will be set up this year? I know there are going to be 2 fields. Are team matches split between the two or are they run like the divisions in St Louis.

Our data collection people are going a little nuts trying to figure out how to do data (our team takes data pretty seriously, this year we have 9-11 people at any given time doing data and adding another field to keep track of would be a bit overwhelming to say the least.

From what I heard, even number matches on one field and odd number matches on another. Tell me about the problem with collecting scouting data. You probably know 2834 is also very very serious about collecting data. We bought 6 more tablets in order to get all the data from both fields. Tell me we are obsessed with data.

hardcopi 05-04-2015 23:44

Re: Michigan State Championship

Really you hide your obsession so well. :)

We have 6 kids with tablets... 1 per team keeping track of quantitative data. Then we have 3 kids and 2 mentors keeping track of qualitative data. This of course doesn't include the scouts who are coming up with strategies for upcoming matches and talking to the drive team using the data from the qualitative data team.

The quantitative data comes into play when we decide our pick list. To properly do 2 fields we would need to double our team size. At the end of each event we have a full database and several full binders of information. :) Might not be at your level yet Ed but we are working on it. :D

5517 is very excited to be attending the Michigan State Championship! We are a rookie team and when we first started we did not think we would ever make it this far at all. This has been an amazing experience the last few months for us all.

Jaywalker1711: What a small world haha... my team chose your team at Kettering for eliminations! Great job at winning Traverse City!

MSC used to have a Hall of Fame like setup in the hallway for all the Hall of Fame finalists up until last year but did away with it.

Yeah we were upset we didn't make it but we had a rough start at kentwood and then got it together at west Michigan and escanaba. It was to late though. Good luck to all the teams there and we will see some of you in St. Louis.

After watching the PNW and Indiana District champs last weekend, I expect 80+ teams to average over 100 points per match and maybe even a few over 200.. :ahh:

Ed is right. Even matches on one field and odd on the other.

I also think there may be a surprise still be had.

Any more info for those of us trying to plan scouting on limited resources (I have six students left total once I take out the drive team and one pit person)? Estimated number of matches? Will the odd and even matches play simultaneously or one after another? Can you see both fields if you get a decent seat? etc....

And I agree, we are thankful here that there is no Chairman's booth. We weren't sure how we could staff it. :D

Oh, and does anyone know for sure if they are interviewing Dean's List semi-finalists again at States? I have heard yes and no.

102 Teams / 6 Teams per Match = 17

17 x 12 Matches = 204 Matches

Matches played one after another. I would suppose some seating will be good to see both fields.

My suggestion: Hook up with another team with scouting. I do know a few teams that are also doing this. Never hurts to ask for help.

Yeah, I'm thinking we need to find someone to work with.

100 teams & 12 Matches, that is a pretty crummy ratio of over 8:1.

A typical District has a ratio of under 4:1. For this year's game, perhaps it isn't such a big deal but for typical years, I think this sorting would be pretty terrible.

Remember that one of the great thinks that going to 8 Divisions at the Worlds is that the number of teams per district dropped from 100 per division down to 75.

My two cents.

Dr. Joe J.

Congratulations on another Dean's List semifinalist (for now) in the family. Hopefully she will follow her sister's footstep and go all the way.

We will be scouting both fields. If you need any data, we would be happy to share.

Re: Michigan State Championship

Both Indiana and PNW Championships had roughly equal qualifying averages (though PNW had a larger amount of teams), but PNW had higher elims scores. I believe that this is because both districts had similar amounts of teams with a certain skill (aka the top 10% can score X, the next 10% can score Y, etc.) but PNW had the higher elims scores since there were more top-tier teams to choose from come alliance selections (77% of Indiana teams were in finals, while only 37.5% of PNW teams were in finals).

By this token, #1 seed in Michigan will be hovering around 170 average (probably higher since Michigan has some worldwide top tier teams - 1023 scored higher than this last weekend), and almost all of the teams will be over 100 average. The elims will be really high scores, though!

I'll second the request for more info about how the fields are set up. Can the "average" seat see both fields? If not, then even those of us with more students will need to tweak our scouting methodology.

Also, if you can't see both fields from a typical seat, then what are the teams in the stands going to do? Are the teams going to be moving from one side of the arena to the other to be able to watch their matches. "Hey everyone, our next match is odd, so let's get up and move to the other side of the arena."

Clarification about the Deltaplex. One of our mentors called this morning.

While they normally do not allow tailgating, they will be allowing the FRC Michigan Championship Event robotics teams to do so. Gail was informed of this morning's conversation and asked that I post this clarification on this thread.

The google doc should also be updated.

Let other attending teams know. When we read the document, it caused our team a bit of panic.

With 16 alliances, what is the format for the first round of playoffs? Will there be a complete "Eighth-finals" round with the top 8 alliances moving on to a traditional "Quarter-finals" round, or will the top 4 alliances move straight to the Semi-finals? Perhaps something different?

It's spelled out in the latest team update but basically yes, there will be 2-match "octofinals." 8 alliances with advance and from there it will be a regular tournament.

I don't think you'll have a problem seeing both fields from even the worst seat in the house. I will warn that even a close field feels far away (think how worlds feels).

Check out the latest team update where the "Octofinals" are detailed. As a note, no team will have to switch fields during the Octofinals, and we will collapse down to one field starting with Quarter Finals.

While I'm here I also wanted to mention that we have a full practice field with electronics just like at worlds plus 3 district practice fields. Details on practices matches will be available at the event. We are still one event so all teams will play on both fields for qualifications. It will be an even/odd split.

It'll be interesting indeed. My guess is that one team will be sent to the landfill to get totes. I know 1023 was originally designed as a landfill bot (look at week 1 Southfield), but they found more consistency with a ramp fed hp (week 3 Woodhaven).

I don't know much about the others, but I'm predicting that these alliances will easily make more 6 stacks than cans.

Perhaps a bit of a dumb question here (or maybe I'm just not finding the right info anywhere), but how do you know which matches are to be played on which field? Are even-numbered matches on field 1 and odds on field 2?

I'm an alumni stuck about 300 miles north of the event up at college, but still want to support my team by watching on the webcast in between classes. :) Also, good luck to all the teams there this weekend! Everyone has worked super hard and definitely deserves to be at the championship!

FIM State Championship went well for most teams I thought. We (3641) are going to worlds! A note about the eliminations - one bad match and it's over. We had a bad match in the quarterfinals (116 points) and followed with a 210 point match but still didn't make it to the semis. Good luck to all the teams going to worlds.

We were operating nowhere near full strength this weekend. We had high hopes, but given some of the circumstances, I think we overreached a little bit with what we were trying to do.

We had a little bit of good execution, a bunch of poor execution, and a whole lot of extremely bad luck.

Luckily, we were able to put in a lot of time developing our canburglars for champs. We now have a bunch of improvements to make to get them to world class speed and consistency.

Thankfully 3641 saw through all our issues and made us the #2 pick. Gave me a chance to play with my home town team. Also got some great help from 5114, some of my co-workers help with their team. Unfortunately we were bit with a little bad luck in QF1...no way to overcome a bad score in this format with every alliance capable of putting up 200pts.

Congrats to 1023, 548, and 1711. They were truely the best alliance. The rest of us were playing for 2nd place.

Congrats to 503, 68, and 2137 on the Chairman's awards, along with all the other award winners.

Thanks to all the great volunteer in Michigan. We'll wish we were back here when we get to St. Louis and experience the differences on the outside.

But, we move on with our ultimate goal still in front of us. Good luck to all the FIM teams at Champs!

All of you have no idea how much it means to us when you say congrats. Hearing teams that we attempt to emulate, like 67 or 33, congratulate us is absolutely amazing. Thank you guys so much, and also a huge thank you to our fantastic alliance partners!

Mech Warriors put together a beautiful alliance. I didn't see 27 face off directly with 548, but it's no surprise that the two fastest grabbers ended up in the finals.

Somebody needs to make a compilation video of the first second of the St. Louis matches. It's gonna get silly.

Congratulations to 1023,548 and 1711 on a big win. You guys formed an awesome alliance. 1023's ability to consistently put up 3 capped six stacks was awesome and I know that 548 was on the top of our pick list if we would have qualified higher.

Thanks to team 85 BOB for choosing us and to 2337 the Enginerds for rounding out our alliance. We had a lot of potential and I was hopeful when we came out of the gate with 208 in octo #5 but we never seemed to click as well after that.

Congrats to all the teams that made it to MSC. There was still a lot of talented teams that did not get to play in the finals. I look forward to seeing all the Michigan teams in St Louis.

Congrats to all teams who competed at FiM District Championship. Hats off to 15 rookie teams who made it! Probably this is the first year so many rookies were competing at this event.

The event was well organized, Marjie Jenkin, Cindy Nade and others did a great job. There were no delays in quals, infact many a times they were ahead of schedule...thanks to volunteers and the teams for being on time. Field reset crew were lighening fast and have amazing stamina.

And then comes Don Bossi and the man himself Dean Kamen! Meeting them in person makes you forget that you didn't make it to elimns!

I've got a set of grabbers that would like to argue that statement. ;)

I cannot thank our 200+ volunteers enough. You had a bigger challenge than usual this year. Regardless, you all absolutely rocked at your roles, and I am so happy I had the opportunity to work with all of you! :)

Congratulations on your Woodie Flowers Bob. I can't think of anyone more deserving.

How long do you stand up when they play the 'how long have you been in FIRST' game? 20+ years?

Yeah up until this year 67 was in the finals for every MSC since it was created (Champions two times, finalists three times). Can't wait to see what their full potential is though when they unleash everything at Worlds.
