With now roughly 200 teams in the state, a 20% representation (FIRST's goal at Worlds) would be closer to 40 teams. I think I'll chat with folks about expanding state next year.

I don't think we could expand State's without adding a second day for competition. As it is, we get just enough matches for the 30 teams for qualifications, and that's running quals through to a very late lunch. Many teams, at this point, can't afford to have their students take yet another day off school, especially with all the tests and such that are happening this close to the end of the school year. Think about it... if your team went to two regionals and worlds prior to this, that's a minimum of 7 days out of class to compete - a week and a half off school. Additionally, adding another day would increase costs for many teams, as they would then need additional hotel stays. As it is, teams that aren't within easy driving distance of Minneapolis often send in a skeleton crew (sometimes just 2 people!) friday for load-in/inspection, and the rest of the team drives in Saturday morning and back home Saturday evening.

Yes, having more teams at State's would be awesome... but it adds a number of logistical issues that would, I think, end up hurting the event this late in the season.

As a parent/mentor, I completely agree that limiting the number of missed school days is important. It helps that most teams are located within a relatively short drive of either Mpls or Duluth. Teams can also send skeleton crews to do load-in/inspection/pit set-up during regional events, right?

On a related note, would the number of missed school days be different if/when Minnesota adopts the district model? Looks like the Michigan FRC State Championship is a Wed-Saturday event.

Potentially, some districts run Saturday-Sunday events and some run Friday-Saturday events.

District Championships are run exactly like a Regional is run. Load-in Wednesday night and everything else takes place Thursday through Saturday.

According to this event schedule, Michigan's championships had the opening ceremony and 7 hours of qualification matches on Thursday. Qualification matches for regionals like Duluth or Mpls don't start until Friday morning, right? That gives many teams the option of sending a skeleton crew Wed after school or early Thurs (missing 2 days of school), and sending the rest a day later, so that they only miss one day.

You are correct, but that skeleton crew will still miss more school. Additionally, if you're not part of a skeleton crew, you'll still miss two days of school by attending two Regionals, which is the same amount as the Michigan district championship.

NE Districts Example

125 Attended 3 Districts, a regional, DCMP, and WCMP (all told, 6 official events)

One district was Sat/Sun, One district was during school vacation, WCMP was during another school vacation.

So, we missed 2 days for districts, 2 for DCMP, and 2 for the regional. All told not too bad. And we compete more than almost any other team.

Re: 2015 Minnesota State Championship

Indiana districts were 2 day events - Friday / Saturday or Saturday / Sunday.
Load in was 5 PM the night before, so students missed at most 1 day of school.

The Indiana CHP was also a 2 day event, with 32 of the top teams, based on points. It was run just like a District event. Michigan, due to the number of teams, has a larger CHP event.

In a District system, the State CHP is also before the FIRST CHP because that is how you qualify for the FIRST CHP.

We did 3 district events and the IND CHP and the students only missed 2 days of school. One district was Sat-Sun, one was during Spring Break. We did miss 2-1/2 more days for the FIRST CHP.

That's the beauty of the system in that you can have several events within a district all with different schedules to help meet your teams needs.

In 2014 we attended a Thurs/Fri district event (2 days), Fri/Sat district event (1 day), the District Championship Thurs/Fri/Sat (2 days), and the World Championship Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sat (3.5 days since the team left part way through Tuesday).

In total it was 8.5 days out of school. Only at one of our first events of the year were we advised some of the students needed to stay back on school days.

This year we looked for more of the Saturday and Sunday events so we could keep the kids in school longer and went to two events that were Saturday & Sunday and repeated our 2014 run of DCMP & WCMP but with worlds the team left Monday afternoon so it worked out to 6 missed days of school.

Keep in mind though depending on how far you need to travel you may need to have your load in crew leave early to get to the event when doors open. I believe there are some teams up in Maine with 3+ hour rides to get to some district events so they leave mid day.

Overall for the number of matches you play in addition to the decreased cost per play the travel time doesn't jump up as bad if you plan your events to use no or only 1 school day for the event.

I would largely chalk that up to the relative youth of MN compared to other regions. In other regions, the old teams are the triple digit teams. Here, our "old" teams have numbers in the 2000s.

Incidentally, the two teams that have qualified all 4 years, 1816 and 2052, are the two lowest active numbered teams in the state.

There are a few teams that have made it to state for all of their active years. We have been active for 3 years and have advanced to state all three years.

While one could hijack this thread with discussion about the parity, I think the parity is what makes MN FRC so awesome. I hope you continue to have the expansion you have enjoyed and that all of those teams make the MN state championship soon.

Congrats and enjoy the tournament.

Frustrating that we can attend in-person for free yet have to pay to watch it online. I get it, there are costs to film and host the event, but this is not the same as hockey. There are no paid tickets for robotics.

It could be free. The producers want it to be free. However because of the partnership with the MN State High School League, the fee is mandatory. Given the status Robotics has by being a part of the MSHSL I would say it's worth having to pay for the livestream to maintain the partnership. Hopefully they can work out a deal in the future that allows it to be free.

For my informational use, is this "partnership" between prep45 and MSHSL? I assume that because of this deal, local teams are prohibited from live streaming the event themselves? Hopefully something can be worked out before next year...

Yes, this is a MSHSL partnership. As you can imagine, they have a contract for live streaming that is probably all inclusive - it applies to hockey games, football games, etc, and everyone likes that... But it also applies to robotics. The same rules apply to us as to them for this event!

Congrats to the first seeded alliance 2512, 3130, and 4215 for winning state this year! Your alliance certainly deserved it!

I found it a bit interesting that the 1st seeded alliance was consisted of robots that attended the Northern Lights regional and that the 2nd seeded alliance was consisted of robots that attended the Lake Superior regional. Both alliances went against each other in the finals and in the end Northern Lights prevailed just like they did in the double deccer match back in week 1. Great finals matches.

As for our alliance, Thanks for picking us 2883 FRED(We started the journey at Lake Superior and ended it here alongside you guys once again) and 2526 crimson(You guys did everything our alliance asked for so great job) for being great alliance members.

I also want to congratulate many MN robots that didn't make state this year. Many great teams and robots were left out of this year's state championship so congratulations to those teams on a good season.

KnightKrawler is glad to have competed once again at State. It's always a great time to compete with MN teams. Thanks to the volunteers who help put up this amazing event this year.

Re: 2015 Minnesota State Championship

Congrats to all teams competing in the 4th MSHSL Tournament!

After the dust settled, it was apparent that 2512 (Duluth East Daredevils) and 3130 (East Ridge ERRORS) cemented their spots as premier teams in Minnesota. They had to go through perennial powerhouse 2052 (KnightKrawler) - the two time defending champion - and an always strong 2883 (FRED).

3130 and 2512 have been powerhouses in Minnesota for as long as my team has been around. To see these two teams do as well as they did throughout the FRC season and then cap it off with a State Tournament Championship was satisfying . I can go back to the Centurion-Krawler week zero event and even then my team saw something special in 3130. And then 2512 made it to the CMP finals - well, I hope to think it is a sign of good things to come for MN on the national stage.

The State Tournament saw many new teams, but there was a strong contingent of teams with tournament experience. FRC teams 3276 (ToolCats) and 4778 (StormBots) finished in 3rd place - bringing home their second Walnut trophies!

As a state, we are a late-comer to the game. However, I think with the leadership we have, MN will continue to set trends.

Oh - and I do not want to overlook strong showings by teams such as:
5172 - The Gators from GBMR - a second year team, second time they made it to the eliminations at state!
2526 - Lake Superior Champion/Team Spirit Award - looking forward to what you bring in the coming years!
2181 - Impressive showing at Centurion-Krawler event - no surprise on their success!
2667 - AV "How 'bout dem apples" - err "Knights of the Valley" - a strong team for so long.

And of course, my son's favorite team - the Green Machine from Edina... FRC 1816. Without their leadership, none of this would have been possible.

There are so many other teams that deserve congratulations - for competing in the State Tournament - Congrats!

Thank you to all that volunteered and made this event possible for the last 4 seasons - it has become a staple in MN!

Re: 2015 Minnesota State Championship

Wow. This was the fourth State Tournament I've been to and the third time I'd been here as a competitor. It's also probably one of the one's I'm most proud of.

It's been a whirlwind year with the Knights of the Valley and I'm so incredibly proud of our students for finishing up so strong. All I can really say is that I'm inspired by the students from my team... this must be what being a mentor feels like.

I'm not sure many people know this, but this was a very bizarre year for both 2667 and myself. I actually joined the team midseason, and both myself and the team were coming off of a bummer year in 2014-- myself from the unfortunate events at North Star Regional, and 2667 from their fourth straight bottom-third finish. I think we were both fed up at that point, and we gave it our all to have what probably is the best season we've had on our own merit. For the first time, we were an alliance captain at a regional and qualified for the state tournament, and it's all thanks to the incredible, determined students of our team, supported by some fantastic mentors. I'm seriously looking forward to another year working with the awesome people at Apple Valley High School, win or lose. I'm just happy to have shared this excellent season with you all.

Can you convert those FMS reports to excel and post them in the TBA moar Data FB Group? That way, we can get it imported and archived?

I took Doug's data and converted it into TBA's importer format, it can be found on the FB page. I also posted an issue on the GitHub page to so it gets tracked.
