Re: 2015 Carson Division

For all our qualification alliance partners, thank you! We had absolutely zero problems working out strategy to maximize the alliance score and that was a huge part of our ranking. It was a privilege to work with so many great teams.

That's as high as we have ever been.
Thanks 16, 85 and 203. It was one helluva ride.

Thank you to 16, 1501, and 203 for joining us in the playoffs. I never would have guessed we would have been so lucky to work with such amazing teams. All of you were class acts and were nothing short but amazing to work with. We were all blown away that 16, 1501, and 203 were left on the board.

16 - You really showed the veteran experience that we needed in the playoffs, I appreciated all the strategy discussions we had as we planned field maneuvers around each other on the field. Even when things didn't go to plan, you were able to re route and execute very quickly.

1501 - We knew you guys could go stack crazy, but you took it to another level by cranking out three stacks a few times. Your robot performed magnificently, and your team was a pleasure to work with. I am so very glad to have worked with you.

203 - With how your qualifying went, your robot deserved to be playing Saturday morning, but you handled it with class. I know we struggled whether our not to sit 85 out and let you guys stack because you were so good at it! It was also a struggle to let you guys put on a spare can grabber because we knew you had to take parts off such a great working robot. It wasn't the original plan to have your team work on that, we picked you because of your stacking ability, but your team never batted an eye and got to work on it. We really appreciate all you went through for the alliance.

Congrats to 1325, 3339, 20, and 1711! It was fun to watch all the amazing teams form their alliances. With such a deep Carson field, I know we struggled with what strategy to take in the playoffs, it was fun to see how other teams approached it.

So after landing in Israel just wanted to say thank you for all the teams competing with us in Carson. We had the pleasure to meet you all and learn so much from you.
A special thanks goes to 1325 who believed in us enough to invite us to be their alliance partners as their 1st pick. You guys had a simple but smart and amazing design that was able to function in such a consistent way. I had the opportunity to be on the field with you guys and learn how a winning team should be functioning. With any request we or our alliance partners had you were the first to be there and help out. Thanks!

Team 20 Were one of the most awesome teams I've ever met. They were a successful 2rd pick for our alliance and helped us out in the right moments, both on the field and off the field. They're were extremely gracious and helped us to spread our Israeli spirit with our flags with a big proud!

Team 1711 was an amazing 3rd pick to our alliance. They're mentors were very experienced and helped us with every problem we had. The drive team was amazing and kept his consistency with his job on the field. They fought till the last match over any RC and was a huge part in our victory.

A big Shout Out to the Finalist alliance! I've got the chance to play with some of you in qualification and can say that you guys are friendly, welcoming and gracious. Even in the finals you guys knew to keep calm and fought well until the last match.

A couple corrections:

In the first match, 973 drive all the way into the driver station wall and cut off our auto due to a software glitch. We missed the 20 point tote stack as a result. Then at the end of the match, with 7 stacks standing, 973 inadvertently placed the 8th stack on a noodle, causing it to topple and take out another 42 point stack (as well as costing us a couple of penalties for ejecting game objects out of the field).

In the second match, 973 fixed the glitch but still drove a bit too far, and again hit us in auto. Soon after teleop began, 999 flipped over onto the landfill, thus cutting off 973's access to their second and third stacks. We knew we needed 215 points to advance, and at this point it was basically impossible. We dropped a can at the end as well, but by that point it didn't matter.

All in all an unfortunate series of events. Our alliance was capable of scoring every can and upright tote on the field, had canburglars on all four robots (subjectively, three of them were at least as fast as the fastest ones on Einstein), and had three robots with 20 point autonomous modes, but the vicious nature of the eliminations format along with some really mistimed bad luck ended our day way earlier than we had hoped.

Congratulations to the four alliances that were able to capitalize on our mistakes, and to the eventual division champions!

Here is some field side video of the match that I posted in another thread:

Carson QF 4
I have a feeling that 973 being in the right driver station was also having their vision of the field blocked by the stacks of totes placed right in the front of them.
Did they know that the noodle was there? Did the countdown cause them to push their luck?

Carson QF8
The most poignant part of this match was at the very end as time expired.
254's tether became entangled in 973's drivetrain at 2:00.
The tether snaps as the buzzer sounds.

In spite of the publicity this year, no tethered robots made it to the Einstein Finals.

Kids and I knew it was there. They were hesitant to score for that reason, I thought we were clear enough and told them to go for it.

It wasn't a good call.

I can say for sure that your alliance had the best can burglar and the best robots and I was really hoping to have the chance to play on the same field with you.
Things like that can happen.. especially in the rush of the game.
Thank you for a wonderful season, you guys rock!

Recycle Rush, for all of the controversy about the nature of the game, has it's redeeming qualities. Those wang dang noodles affected the outcome of many matches.
Human players = important

This particular match had all of the drama of this years Super Bowl with the blocked pass to the end zone at the end that determined who won the game. Just listen to the response from the audience when the stacks fell.
GDC = good job.

A) It was an interception.
B) There were no pool noodles on the field for absolutely no reason.

You are correct, my apologies to Mr. Butler.

This has me confused. Double negative with hyperbole. Are you referring to the Super Bowl or Carson QF4?

Several of the inspectors commented on the fact that one of the questions on the inspection form was, does your robot pose a possible entanglement hazard.
How did the tethered bots get by this?

Ours had an active tether - more of an obstacle than the ramp tethers. We tell the inspectors that our robot and tether play alone in 1/8 of the field. And our robot had fenders to keep the tether from entangling. Inspectors at 3 regionals and champs didn't question us further.

We also had a ramp for alliance members to use. In our case that was a tether ran along the wall between two pieces (ramp and stacking cube) that did not move - again no problem.

Thanks to team Bumblebee for being such wonderful spirit - you're our role models as we work on improving our team spirit this year. Even if we hadn't gotten anything else from CMP (and oh, yes, we did), sitting next to you and rooting for you during selection and playoffs on Carson was worth the trip.

And you can bet that we kept rooting for you on Einstein from way up in 448!

Looking forward to hearing "Bee Bee Bum-ble-bee" at CMP again next year!
