This looks like it will be the strongest division this year, with 67, 225, 254, 1519, 1730, 2085, 4488, 5254, and 5406 all looking like they could captain a high alliance on another division. Very, very exciting.

I've handled pic collection in the past (don't have time this year), you don't want to leave it public and open.

Instead have the gallery view only, and people can email pics in.

You saw what trolls did to the division prescouting doc after all.

Good point. I was impressed but disappointing as I watched Mario and Nyan cat take over the sheets. Does anyone want to volunteer to manage this photo collection?

5053 Laker Robotics is blown away by the quality of the robots in Carson.

We have been lucky to have been mentored by Killer Bees 33 and learn from Rush 27, who are in our neighborhood, but when I saw that HOT 67 was ranked 8th in the division I was both scared and thrilled.

We look forward to playing with all of you in St. Louis.

1519 also has a 2-can grab. It was well-practiced at the practice fields at NE DCMP, but it only saw use in one official match (see Q38 at DCMP, in which it worked perfectly)... a side-effect of having a dependable 3 tote auto is that we typically wanted to lock in the 20 points! We are currently speeding up our canburglars; for DCMP 'reliability!' was our mantra, now we're complimenting that with speed.

558 and 5122 both have quick ~1s 2-RC burglars that they used throughout NE DCMP. Both have two of the better canburglars at DCMP, but expect them to be speeding them up some!

I feel like Carson shouldn't have a field named after her. For example, Copernicus seems much more impactful than Carson.

Carson - alerted world about the impact of fertilizers/pesticides on environment
Copernicus - proved planets and planetary objects orbit around the Sun, not Earth

and most people have never heard of Carson. Maybe only known scientists should have fields named after them like Stephen Hawking, Ada Lovelace, Thomas Edison, or Dmitri Mendeleev. Anyone have any opinions?

So what if people haven't heard of her? Does that make her work any less influential and impactful?
She did more than alert the world about pesticides and the environment; she inspired the green revolution.

Yes it does make her less impactful. Alerting the world about pesticides is far less impactful than what Einstein did. That is why the finals field is not named after her. And because the scientists I listed are more impactful than she, one of them should be named a field over her.

The good news...with two Championships, there will be potentially be more field naming opportunities.
I appreciate what FIRST is trying to do by including a diverse set of changemakers in their naming schemes. Objectively measuring the magnitude of one's impact is not an exact science.

I'm going to have to disagree strongly with you there. As Jaywalker said, Rachel Carson changed the world, especially for scientists and engineers. Before Silent Spring, few people gave any thought to the side effects and long-term impacts of the products they produced and consumed. The future was bright, and humans could do no wrong that they couldn't fix later :)

Carson's careful research, and effective publicity woke us all up to the fact that our environment commons did not have a limitless capacity to absorb our crap. The book created a movement that led to the first really strong environmental protection laws, but more importantly changed the way everyone thinks of their place in nature. There are tens of thousands of environmental scientists working in fields of study that didn't exist before the 70s. Engineers today have to consider a much broader context when introducing new products, and I think we're a better profession because of that.

Never said she didn't do anything or didn't have an impact. I said there are others who had greater impacts. And if you want to talk about things before the scientists, before Copernicus everyone believed Earth was the center of the universe. Before Ada, there was no programming. Before Edison, there were no lightbulbs.

My point was I think the fields should be named after people who are known. No doubt there are a myriad of scientists who impacted the world, but if no one knows of them, they shouldn't have fields named after them. The name of the field should make one think "Hey, I know of that person. They did this..." Not, "Never heard of them." Also, Nye Field would be cool.

By removing 3 parts we can be 10.5 LB underweight so cheesecake is an option!

I've taken a stab at calculating everyone's "Strength of Schedule" (SOS) in Carson using the preliminary schedule. You can find the results here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

This was a little different than what I did last year (which was use OPR to predict a "win margin" for each team at each match and then average the predicted win margin). This year, I thought the best way to show SOS was, for each team, calculate the average number of *points* all of their alliance partners will bring to their matches (where max OPR is a stand in for points in this method). A team's own OPR is ignored, as are the OPRs of the opposing alliance. This ignores the resource constraints that will come into play during the high scoring matches (the limited number of chutes and cans), and any unique pairings that might help or hurt a team's efficiency, but I think it's a good first effort. The data could be useful for planning strategy, and might also influence scouting. Feel free to suggest modifications to my method!

And I'm sorry for team 1629 :(

Yuck! SOS 74 out of 76....lets go partners, we gotta do better than that! Gonna have to come up with some creative strategies to maximize our skills together.

Planning has started already. Can't wait unil Wedbesday.

1629 GaCo, is looking forward to the challenge. We have the 20 point auto, great at coopertition, and can make some stacks! We can/will be valuable for an alliance in elims, the 20 point auto can make or break things!!! We will just be out there trying to be as consistent as we can be! Keep us in mind!

Ouch! We thought our 61 of 76 was going to be an uphill climb -- you're in an even tougher spot!

Then, looking at the average "SOS" for 1629 -- that's quite a hole, makes me wonder if it can even be correct, being over 20 points below 75th place -- but, assuming it is correct, it's cool to hear that they seem unphased by the challenge!

Re: 2015 Carson Division

I've updated the table to include a "SOS difference from the mean" column. This gives a signal for just how much boost or hindrance the schedule might mean for a team's QA:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...sp=sheets_home

Don't take this table as gospel though - the max OPRs from previous events won't tell you exactly how much your alliance mates will help at Carson (as previously disclaimed).

I have a favor for anyone in Carson...

We need a cross fitting (am-2380) for our pneumatics before inspection. We ordered one to our pit, but at MSC our order didn't get to our pit until Thursday night, so I'm not sure we will have it in time. If anyone could loan us one, we can give it back when ours arrives.

Thanks! :)

nuclearnerd 19-04-2015 22:33

Re: 2015 Carson Division

OK, that took longer than expected, but I updated the SOS spreadsheet to show the modified method of match prediction mentioned upthread. It certainly shifted the SOS rankings around a bit, but the team955 OPR database has a couple of differences than Ed Law's, so that could have been responsible too.

I've also added a column for *prediction caution* which flags any match predicted to exhaust the 3 staged cans. That's like half of them, so expect there to be many fewer QAs over 130 than predicted.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...gid=1772597961

Finaly, Angelah - We don't have a cross fitting, but I think we can spare two (1/4" press-in) tee fittings. If that helps, feel free to visit us at our pit.

Edit - just thinking a bit more, there's some other weirdness about the predicted co-op scores in SOS V2. I've added some comments about that here: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...1&postcount=24

Why would we be phased by the challenge? In 2015, we won a regional, and the Chairmans Award, what a great season already!!! Championships is just icing on the cake! We here at Team 1629 take everything in stride. To quote my 2 year old daughter "That's what you get and don't throw a fit". So when it comes to match schedules, that is the philosophy we use. The only thing we can control somewhat is the strategy that is played out in each match to maximize points!!! Good luck to all teams!

What a fantastic attitude! Sorry we're not scheduled to have a match together.

When I saw that there was an "SOS v2" I thought, "Maybe 1629 won't still be 76 of 76 in the new list." However, it looks like you still are bottom of the list. :(

However, 1519 is moving down to keep you company. We went from "61 of 76" in "SOS v1" to "73 of 76" in the new list!

We're looking forward to working with our alliance partners to come up with some strategies that defy the predictions... :)

The V2 algorithm works against consistent co-op teams like 1519 (and 5406 fwiw). It assumes that your team will do co-op all of the time, but that the next highest co-op teams on your alliance will only score their average number of stacks (instead of making more stacks with the time they save not co-oping). Still - it does highlight the fact that you need to work on the strategy for those matches.

Team 3880 is ready to go! We have a nice light ramp for use by anyone, I believe it was under 3lbs., I will reweight it tomorrow.

We started a can grabber at Silicon Valley Regional with the help of Devin from Citrus Circuits and will should have it ready in time for qualifiers.
Mahalo Devin you are the man!

If not we currently have 7lbs. free and if we remove one part it will free up an additional 15lbs. That's 22 lbs of cheese caking goodness!!

I will post a new picture tomorrow after we uncrate to reflect the improvements added during our two regionals!

Very excited to be part of this division and look forward to working with all of you.

Good Luck to Everyone!

ALOHA!
