Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
Call me blind, but I can't see a single paper airplane in that picture...
|
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
Or we don't encourage mass littering?

It's not the best picture, but there were a BUNCH of airplanes flying through the air!
|
Here's one!
|
Here's a video of everyone throwing one at the same time!

Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
Brings back memories of 2013, when I scored one in the pyramid goal on Einstein.... (from the highest tier of stands, no less)

Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
Please don't encourage this activity. It IS fun to throw a plane, but it's also dangerous, disruptive, and disrespectful to the host venue event staff and volunteers (they have to clean it up).
The biggest takeaway here is safety. Pointy bits at speed and unprotected eyes do not mix. There are threads from the past few years that really shine a light on more reasoning to "why not". |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
Now the paper airplanes will never stop. Throwers have literally been encouraged by the Air Force to continue.

Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
It was literally a barrage of paper airplanes coming in down on the floor, most from nearby that were rather poorly crafted and did not fly well at all. I was hit probably a dozen times, and I was taking cover near the wall. I thought it was rather rude and unprofessional to essentially be throwing trash in the venue prior to a grand event like the opening ceremonies. Do they do this at the Olympics? Then again, our game involves an element of the alliances throwing trash at each other...
And then there were flying saucers. Yes, plates being thrown like Frisbees. And then, the Air Force guy encouraged everyone to make and throw an airplane... I will be honest and say though, I was mildly amused by the couple that made it all the way to the big screen on the stage, and they seemed to catch Dean and Woodie's attention (in some way, not sure which) too. Perhaps we ought to have a one-time airplane contest on one of the days, and ban them the rest of the time. |

Maybe not the Olympics but still a professional sport. |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
Let's see - they kick everyone out of the pits at 5:30 sharp, and then rather than starting the ceremony on time at 6:00, the actual starting time gets dragged out till almost 6:30.
What do they expect thousands of idle engineering hands to do in the meantime?!?!:) |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
Watching all the airplanes launch was literally the coolest thing ever.

Ever get the feeling that the human player throwing noodles in this years game is a response to the paper airplanes last year?

Paper airplanes, on the other hand... ain't nobody gonna know they're comin' from the venue side, or at least that's what you should expect. |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
I had a professor in college once who said that you don't pour sidewalks where you prefer but where the grass is already gone. In other words you sometimes go with the flow even if you don't get it - human engineering.
I understand people who don't agree with the paper airplanes. Personally I think calling the throwers rude is a step too far. And are they all that dangerous, really? Plus the level of effort to pick them up is not all that crazy, nowhere near the effort to clean bathrooms etc. The airplanes are good clean, if justifiably annoying to some, fun. Perhaps we should go with the flow and ask people to throw them at the same time? Or make a contest out of it? |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
I love the paper airplanes, I think most of us do. And yeah I don't think that the volunteers have to clean them all up, but I don't see a huge problem with them before Einstein or opening ceremonies, but it seems so tied to me when people throw them while there are people on stage speaking. It seems like it gets kind of out of hand.

Someone from the upper deck just threw a plane onto Newton field at the end of match 68. Completely unacceptable! They should be ejected from the arena.

its only gonna be a problem in the 2016 water game, because the staff will have to fish out all the soggy paper airplanes from the field.

I remember last year our chief mentor told everyone on our team to pick up as many paper airplanes as they threw, to try to take care of at least some of the waste. |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
I actually love the airplanes and I miss coming to St. Louis this week. For personal reason I was not able to come with my team despite this is our most successful year and I am the main mentor and sponsor.
One simple way to deal with the "litter" is to place multiple green recycle container in each section of the dome and have a small competition just before the ceremony start to see which section can put all their "litter" into the green recycling container the fastest. |

Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
To clarify, volunteers do not pick up the airplanes. In fact, when we started we were told to stop because there was a union that took care of it.

Airplanes are one thing, but I think we can all agree that throwing large, tightly wadded rolls of paper towels into the stands isn't a good idea, right?

Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
I just saw a neat circular one make it to the middle of the field, and then another of the same design all the way past the field.
|
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
If you're legitimately upset by people having fun by throwing some paper airplanes, you should probably find something to be more concerned about.
Also, this kind of stuff totally happens in actual sports - not that we need to try and be like a professional sport. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtE7eFcKvvs |

I tweeted today that I was sitting in a paper airplane flight path. I don't mind that I got hit many times by them and grazed on my cheek once. After all, this happened because I has a great seat:) I do mind that I got hit in the back by a foam stress ball toy plane. I get that it was thrown as a joke. And it didn't hurt. But it felt like a bit much |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
I personally quite enjoyed seeing the airplanes. The only problem I have with them is when they're made out of an entire newspaper section. Those things can get pretty heavy, and when they get airborne for a while they get up to good speeds. A couple landed near me before the Einstein matches. Thankfully they only hit my shoes...
|
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
Airplane throwing got out of hand. It was fun while we waited for the Einstein playoffs to start. It was an unnecessary nuisance the remainder of the afternoon and detracted from the proceedings.
I asked my students to stop throwing. I wish others had done the same. If you that think it is all in good fun, please encourage your students to throw paper products during all FIRST events. Scott Rippetoe |

http://imgur.com/UyxYex6 http://imgur.com/4WFTKk7 These are 3 pictures I took on my way out after the last finals match. The number of people I saw slip on the paper was absurd. I've been to numerous professional sporting events and this was worse than all of them. As other have said paper airplanes are one thing. But airplanes made out of an entire Championship Brochure, folded poster board, or even just throwing random heaps of paper over the edge isn't fun. Its immature and incredibly disrespectful to those sitting below. Some of the airplanes even had chewed gum holding them together.... /rant |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
That is so disrespectful to the venue. We are part of the FIRST family. We share the principles of Gracious Professionalism. Making a mess for others to clean up is not Gracious Professionalism. Annoying the thousands of fellow FIRSTers watching the event proceedings by hitting them with a barrage of paper is not Gracious Professionalism. Creating an unneccesary safety risk is not Gracious Professionalism.
Do we even need to have this argument anymore? Please. No more paper airplane throwing. Lead by example. |

Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
I apologized to the poor guy who had to clean it up saying that this isn't what FIRST is about. He said it was all good. You guys need to start thinking about your actions and who it affects. How would you feel if you had to clean up that mess and planes just kept coming down?

And it wasn't just the planes. There was all sorts of trash including food trash all over the place. It reflected poorly on our program. It sends the message of "thanks for hosting us in your city, hopefully you've got someone to clean up our mess when we leave" |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
I'm bringing this up here because I haven't seen it discussed.
If this is such a problem, why doesn't FIRST put a message on the screen before Einstein starts? The vast majority of kids at these events are not the rulebreaker type. And though I loath to say it, many mentors would crack down on airplane throwing out of fear of the all seeing judges nixing their chairman's award at the last moment. |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
Think of the airplanes as trash and litter in a different form. That's right, whenever you throw a plane, you're littering. Even worse, you're making your trash someone else's responsibility. Also some of these less aerodynamic planes really nosedive and accelerate, making them a safety concern. In a game themed with recycling, it would be nice to see someone recycle their unused program instead of turning them into planes and littering them onto the dome floor and in the stands.
I'm proud to say no one on my team even thought about throwing an airplane, because they all thought it was childish and was annoying. That, and I jokingly threatened to kick some of them off the team ;) |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
Several years ago in Atlanta I thanked a maintenance worker and asked how we compared to a typical football crowd. "Oh, much better!"
I haven't had the opportunity to go to St. Louis because of school and work, but I really hope that is still the case - that FIRST is much better than a typical football crowd. If not, we need to make it happen again! |

These both landed within 3 feet of me in the VIP lounge prior to Einstein. What kind of message is that sending to our invited guests? Just for reference, the smaller of the two is larger than a softball, and that was only two of many. I also saw a team dump what appeared to be their entire events worth of scouting data from the upper deck. A large portion of which landed in the judges seating section. |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!

Again, our mess being "not as bad as a football game" should not be used as an excuse to trash the place. Would you leave your trash in the stands too? It's no different than throwing paper airplanes, wads of paper, or any other object. Think about it. |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
When I left the stands I made sure to clean up all of my own food and drink garbage, then I grabbed a popcorn bucket that someone sitting beside me had left behind, and I crammed into that as many paper airplanes as I could grab off the floor on my way out.
I participated in throwing some of those planes so I figured the least I could do was pick up more than I tossed. In retrospect I should have set a better example by not throwing planes in the first place, AND asking my students to each grab a pile to throw out on their way out. |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
I think throwing the planes at an appropriate time is fine and fun. During the time that a speaker is talking about something serious or personal is not cool. Also the ones made out of anything other than printer paper or line paper hurt.
Using first brochures that could be used for outreach is in my opinion a stupid move those could be used more constructively. My team loves getting their hands on first brochures to use when we talk to people at events and wasting those make zero sense to my team. |
Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
I got hit in my eyes, the plane glided right into my eyes from side, I had no idea it was coming. Some of these "planes" were not planes or gliders, they were just missiles. I don't know how many elderly people get hit with these stupid flying things and what will trigger FIRST to ban them. I don't believe if it will stop anytime soon. It seems Boeing, a sponsor was teaching how to make paper plane or something to that effect and one of the guest speaker mentioned he will give job to those who threw it close to VIPs (some thing to that effect). Fun should not come at the cost of others' safety or peace. Hope no one got seriously injured.

Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
One landed right in front of us while placing a stack on Einstein Semis...
For how awesome Einstein is and how well done everything looks and feels. Seeing a bunch of trash lying around really kills it. I also noticed when leaving the stands later that because of the airplanes (a.k.a. trash) people felt compelled to leave their own trash (food, drinks, candy wrappers, etc.) on the ground as well. Its embarrassing. :o Thank you to the mentors who made sure your teams policed their areas and cleaned up after themselves. |

Re: Airplanes. Airplanes everywhere!
Honestly, these airplanes need to stop. It is a pain not only for everyone in the stands (especially the lower levels who get hit with them) but for the people on the field needing to push them out of the way.
This is mass littering and sure it's fun to see your plane make it down to Einstein, but think about every single person who now has to stay 2 hours extra because you threw a plane. |
