I was getting so excited to see them in action, and then my hopes were dashed.

If a 1/8s bolt comes loose or a 1/8s pole comes loose, I doubt it'll really matter which one it is; both would be equally as dangerous. Maybe the pole more so just for the size of it.

I was thinking about this with my students earlier, and there's a pretty substantial difference between the pole/hooks and these harpoons. While you're correct that a failure can cause the poles to become projectiles, the hooks are projectiles by default. It's not an issue if they hit their target (the hole in the cans), but it can be if they do not. The poles' motion is constrained if they miss the mark, but the harpoons might ricochet. Presumably 1114 took great care to align them to avoid the issue, but if there was a device that was faster is could potentially introduce a projectile with a lot of unconstrained energy.

I was actually surprsied it only came oaround this race. The arms race accelerated pretty slowly (thank goodness).

As a home observer I'm more curious as to whether the harpoon platforms also winched the cans in, or if it was more of a "Noone uses these cans, you have to outstack us" nuclear option for finals?

We thought it was the latter but apprently there is a winch on them.

I didn't see 900 up close in its final form, but this was in 1114's pit Saturday morning, so I'm assuming some kind of winching was incorporated.

There was an incorporated winch... But no way to remove the harpoons from the cans that I could see, short of brute force. I'm pretty sure it was a purely defensive live-action designed to ensure the other alliance did not get the cans and had to stack perfectly.
