Real Robots Live - multiplayer real life robotics game - call for ideas
Hi guys,
Just wanted to make you all aware of a new project, and gather your ideas. The project is called Real Robots Live and will make it possible to log onto a live robot over the internet and drive it around a remote arena. You'll have full control over the robot via the software and will be able to see the camera images that stream from the robot's perspective. It's a high res, low latency feed on the robots and around the arena. Lots of these robots will be playing in the same arena - a real life online multiplayer game! We want robots to be able to construct structures, destroy them using weapons and interact with the arena (opening doors,etc.). Once online, we want to setup RealRobotsLiveTV so everyone can watch live events. This is a call for ideas. This is a game with the real world as it's engine. What would you like to see in this? Check out our videos: website Follow us on twitter and In 2-3 months we are aiming to crowdfund the project. Cheers, Lewis |

Hey,
Thanks for the reply. Well originally this could occur, so we want to create live stream for others to watch the gameplay unfold. With the demand we will do our best to build more arenas so more people can play. We'll also geographically locate these so latency is minimized. What features do you think would be really cool on this game? Lewis |
You could use quadcopters/tricopters as 3rd person cameras.
How varied would the robots be? Is it PvP? Cooperative? |
Re: Real Robots Live - multiplayer real life robotics game - call for ideas
Cool! Drones are definitely something we could work into the game.
Well each robot could have a specialism such as speed, maneuverability, additional servos to pick things up and construct things. What types of robot would you like to see? Games will be both PvP and cooperative, different slots will be different game types. Thanks for the response. Lewis |
Re: Real Robots Live - multiplayer real life robotics game - call for ideas
This is one of those things where the dream version is absolutely amazing, but reality tends to get in the way. I hope this works out, and have a couple thoughts off the top of my head. I will use some references to games, as that is what this is.
Sorry if it is a little rambling. I'd be interested to hear your answers to any of these questions, and discuss them, but really I am suggesting these as things to consider long term as you build up the system of your game, as establishing yourself and keeping players onboard are something very few games succeed at. |

Wow thanks for contribution! You've given us a lot of good advice. The gameplay ideas were really useful.

Thanks a lot for the input and enthusiasm. Be interesting to see how people think we should raise the word for the Kickstarter (August 1st!) |

Have an arena, make it out of cardboard boxes and chalk outlines. Have robots (RC cars, whatever). Have batteries. Have simulated user-activity bursts and droughts. Have real people be a simulated mix of clueless, knuckle-headed, mischievious, chatterbox, whiner, apathetic, know-it-all, complaining, trash-talking, trolling, non-English-speaking, etc. users. Have to seamlessly roll out new software into your robots and other computers during the week. Have members of your team all want to be elsewhere on two days to Christmas and Thanksgiving. Have one or more of your simulated users constantly posting negative comments on the Internet about every mistake you make, and making up negative comments just to be a jerk(s). Have one field gameplay and/or field-reset mechanism malfunction at random intervals. Etc. Do this so that your Kickstarter requests and commitments can be based on RRL- and user-experience predictions and estimates that are as accurate as you can make them. Blake |
Re: Real Robots Live - multiplayer real life robotics game - call for ideas
Absolutely - it's pretty complex the project so they'll be in-house, alpha and beta testing before we fully launch. We've certainly done a lot of testing so far on the platform and technology but of course there will be more to come.

While I'm at it, here's a few suggestions from the mechanical side:

Wow Skywalkar - thanks a lot! Some really great suggestions. My favourites are:
Fisheye camera - this adds some great functionality EMP is a great idea for a weapon - similar to our "Nuke" currently. We have already developed a heads-up display for each clients, but I like the suggestion for a top down map. A gantry camera that can be controlled, great idea! Augmented reality is top of our list for our next feature and you have demonstrated very neatly as to why! As always, more suggestions are welcome! |
Re: Real Robots Live - multiplayer real life robotics game - call for ideas
I must really like this idea, because I keep coming back!
Here's a few more power-ups / abilities / special events that don't necessarily require AR, while I'm at it:

Re: Real Robots Live - multiplayer real life robotics game - call for ideas
I'd urge you not to have them fight. Even with the best modern architecture, latency will be a big issue. So too will money. Why not have a game where damage is minimal?
I don't have any idea how you're going to make this compelling enough to raise the funds needed for uptime yet keep it cheap enough to afford in the first place. That's the biggest issue with any physical robotics events (Battlebots, i'm looking at you), at a certain point, the fans are left wanting more and the robot damages are eating away at your wallet. |

I would indeed strongly discourage the inclusion of weapons of any sort-- even a slow forklift-type weapon could easily break if leveraged in the wrong way! Instead, I would suggest that they stick with the same exact super-durable-box-on-wheels bots that they've already shown so far. That way, the most harm that can come to a bot is falling a grand total of 2-3 inches to the floor-- something that I expect them to be able to handle just fine. |
