Re: CAGE Match VIII
The Planning Committee has been working hard on some innovations to this year's event. I can't tell you about them all now, but it will be pretty cool.
We've had some questions from area teams, and I thought I'd address them here. Q1. When is registration? A1. We plan to open team registration on Monday, August 24. We will still have Early Bird discounts for teams that register by September 18. Q2. Do you need volunteers? A2. Absolutely, and you can sign up now! One of the things we're piloting this year is volunteer training. So if there's a position you've wanted to try, but haven't yet, we can pair you up with a seasoned veteran in that position to see if it's a good fit for you. Simply let us know in the "Is there any other information" field if you'd like to be trained - or to be a trainer. Q3. Indiana went to districts in 2015. Is this event for Indiana teams only? A3. We welcome all our FIRST friends! All FRC teams are welcome to join, regardless of geography. We will have a hard cap of 32 teams, to make sure every team plays in eliminations. Q4. Our team struggles with budget issues. We're not sure we can afford to attend the event. A4. That's not really a question, but I'll still give advice. :) It is $300, but teams can get up to $50 off with the aforementioned Early Bird discount and with another initiative that is still being finalized. In addition, we host separate Student and Adult Roundtable Discussions where team members can share difficulties as well as best practices to overcome them. Finally, since the CAGE Match is set up to introduce people to coopetitive robotics, we welcome prospective team sponsors and partners. In fact, contact me and I'll make that person a judge at the event, to make sure the hook sets deep. We will also have a VIP experience for those who are not able to be there the entire day. |
Re: CAGE Match VIII
REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!!
Please visit the CAGE Match Registration Page to get your team signed up for this year's CAGE Match. We are accepting 32 teams this year. There is a discount for teams who register by September 14th; there is another discount for teams who will loan us students to work shifts as VIP tour guides. No team game pieces are necessary this year. There are more surprises I'm not allowed to share right now - suffice it to say we're planning for a fun, exciting, inviting atmosphere this year. Volunteer registration is open now also. This event provides a great chance to try something you've never done before, to teach others your area of expertise, or to hone your craft. |
Re: CAGE Match VIII
I have the honor and privilege of being the Head Referee for this year's CAGE Match and am happy to share the rules changes that we've made for Recycle Rush. We've been inspired by many of the other off-season events and the changes they've made and also have had the benefit of seeing how those changes have played out. Without further ado:
G6-1 DRIVE TEAMS may not use any object to prop the CHUTE DOOR open.G14 Teams may tether to the ROBOT before or after the match if needed to help with setup and/or removal of the robot from the FIELD. However, tethering must be done so safely.G24 ROBOTS should not cause TOTES, RECYCLING CONTAINERS, and/or LITTER to completely transfer from their side of the FIELD, or from the STEP, onto the opposite side of the FIELD.G27 ROBOTS may not contact anything outside the FIELD. Reasoning behind the changes:

I can't believe this is our 8th CAGE Match. It seems like only yesterday that we got together to talk about the possibility of hosting an event.
Through the 8 years AndyMark and the Indiana teams have been there supporting this event. We couldn't do it without them. |

Re: CAGE Match VIII
Being an event happening during the next school year after the robots were built, several teams will not have the same drive team.
Being an event that is touted as a "rookie experience" several teams will not have the same drive team. Being an event with pre-rookie teams, not every drive team will have ever competed. These, plus wear + tear + modifications means several robots will not perform the same as they did during the season. Predictions might be fun, but are kind of meaningless since so much will have changed compared to in-season competitions. I'm looking forward to CAGE Match for all the new and fun experiences the students will have. |

If everything goes according to plan, we should be bringing a surprise to CAGE that should make some people happy.

Re: CAGE Match VIII
Below is a copy of the email blast that went to team contacts for CAGE.
Hello CAGE Match Teams! Thank you for registering to attend the 8th CAGE Match. This event is only one week and some change away so we would like to share some information with you about the upcoming festivities. Thank you to our sponsors AndyMark and Waterjet Cutting of Indiana for making this event possible. Thanks also to Team 45 the TechnoKats, and Team 1741 Red Alert Robotics. CAGE is here to help your students and mentors new and old prepare for the 2016 FRC season by offering a district similar event that is close how your actual in season event may go. When: October 17th. Doors Open at 7am Where: Southport High School, 971 E. Banta Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46227 Volunteer Opportunities It takes the helping hands of many individuals to pull off any event in FIRST. If you have a desire to be part of the reason CAGE is a success, please visit the volunteer webpage on our website and signup. All volunteers are fed the most delicious of lunches for providing help. If the event is short handed in key areas we may ask some of the VIP volunteered students if they're willing to aid us in other areas. Silent Auction One of our favorite things to do is help those in our community pursue further education. The Arthur Anderson Memorial Scholarship (more details below) is funded primarily by the silent auction hosted during the event. We encourage teams and individuals to bring your items of interest to be a part of the fun auction and help a CAGE Match attending senior. Ronald McDonald House Donations Giving back to the community is something that is near and dear to the FIRST community. CAGE attending teams have come together to provide over 40,000 donations for the families being supported by the Ronald McDonald House over the past several years. This is so important to us we want to ask attending teams to again, help us make a difference in those families lives. We would like to ask teams to bring items off of the linked list as a part of their entry to CAGE. Round Tables In an effort to help make the newer members feel prepared we are again offering two round tables during the event. A student round table starts at 11am and an adult round table happens at 1pm. These round tables will have some topics ready to go to begin discussions then will open up for questions. This is a great place for new members to learn through discussion how future events and the season may go. Load In/Out & Check In Southport High School is located at 971 E Banta Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46227. The entrance for load in and out is on the south side of the building and can be accessed by either Banta Rd. or Shelby St. entrances. Teams can choose to load in Saturday morning after doors open at 7AM or Friday during event setup between 3pm and 7pm. We want to ensure everyone makes it to the event so please visit the small booth just inside the load in area either Friday night (during setup) or Saturday morning. We will have a packet of goodies including the pit map and other information. STEM Fair Details To make this more than just an offseason event, a place for teams and students to get a start we are aiming to host a STEM Fair. This STEM Fair will showcase unique organizations and inventions to inspire students and give them more information on potential STEM careers. The STEM Fair would consist of interactive activities for students (of all ages) and adults to take part in Scholarship Opportunities In honor and memory of the fantastic role model as well as exemplary citizen that Art Anderson was, CAGE will continue to offer the Arthur Anderson Memorial Scholarship to one CAGE attending high school senior. This scholarship as stated above is primarily funded by the Silent Auction so we ask you to consider participating in donating an item. The scholarship form is attached to this email. Please share with your seniors and note the submission must be received by the 15th. Details of where to send are within. Pit Map The pit map will be included in an information packet given to teams at check-in. You will also find match schedules in this packet. Food Options Food trucks will be available for our lunch time break. Below are the options available for this year. - Pierogi Love Indy - Far-Out Freds - Taste of the Caribbean - EMT Schedule Friday: 12:00-12:30 Field Arrives 1:00 Field Setup 3:00 Teams May Bring Robots and Setup Pit 6:00 Field Setup Volunteer Dinner Saturday: 7:00 Doors Open 7:30 Key Volunteer Training Begins 8:00 Training / Practice Matches 8:30 Driver Meeting 9:00 Opening Ceremonies 9:30 Qualifying Matches Begin 9:30 Silent Auction Opens 9:30 STEM Fair Opens 11:00 Student Round-Table Begins 11:30 Student Round-Table Ends 12:00 Matches Stop for Lunch Break 12:30 Qualifying Matches Continue 1:00 Adult Round-Table Begins 1:30 Adult Round-Table Ends 2:30 Silent Auction Ends 3:00 Alliance Selection 3:30 Playoffs Begin 3:30 STEM Fair Closes 5:00 Awards 5:20 Event Tear-Down What Next? We know its a whole lot of information to digest. If there are any questions comments or concerns please do not hesitate to email us back. You can anticipate one more email next week with any details that are in addition to these or changes to details already stated. We're looking forward seeing everyone there! Thanks again to our sponsors AndyMark and Waterjet Cutting of Indiana for making this event possible. |
