Canadian Regional
Posted by Ian Mackenzie at 04/18/2001 4:32 PM EST
Student on team #188, Woburn Robotics, from Woburn C.I.. Team 188 (Woburn Robotics) and Team 610 (Crescent FIRST Robotics) are attempting to organize a Canadian regional either next year or the following year. The competition would likely be held at the University of Waterloo in Kitchener, Ontario. How many teams would be interested in participating? Driving time from Detroit is approximately 3 1/2 hours, and an American dollar will get you about one and a half Canadian. -Ian Mackenzie Co-President, Woburn Robotics |
Good for NY and MI teams too

Engineer on team #65, The Huskie Brigade, from Pontiac Northern High School and GM Powertrain. In Reply to: Canadian Regional Posted by Ian Mackenzie on 04/18/2001 4:32 PM EST: Ian- That sounds like a great idea - it should draw some of the upstate New York teams and some of the Michigan teams, since it is similar driving distance to the West Michigan Regional for the Detroit teams. It would be a tough decision for a team like ours. We go to regionals that we can drive to (i.e., ones that don't cost us a fortune in time and effort). We went to Ypsi and Chicago until WMR came along - now our default is Ypsi and Grand Rapids. So, we would have to decide whether or not to go to 3 regionals, or to go to Canada instead of Grand Rapids. We would strongly consider it, though. Make sure you inform Bob Hammond of FIRST what you are trying to do, because they will need to approve it. I know they plan the regionals far in advance, because we actually had them turn down a proposal to have a 2001 regional in Rochester, MI (at Oakland University) in June of last year. Bob told me they already had a 2nd MI regional lined up. Hopefully when Michigan is ready for regional #3 we can get one in Oakland County (arguably the c.g. of FIRST in the country :))). Ken |

We've contacted Bob Hammond and asked him to visit us in Toronto soon to talk about that.
