KOP 2016

Anyone know what the KOP deal is this year? The "option" opens this Thursday, but I can't find it anywhere.

What option are you referring to?

"Kickoff Attendance & Kit Pick up / Delivery" selection opens at noon Friday, October 2. The button to let you do it won't be present until then.

In years past there has been a opt out for chassis in the veteran KOP. I suspect that will be the same this year, but that is unfounded speculation on my part. Once again that option showed up sometime in Oct in years past.

What do rookie teams usually get? I've seen a few times the Veteran KOP but never the rookie one...

Veteran KOP, plus a control system (RIO and modules, radio) and compressor. Rookies also usually get a second battery and a charger included.

This is in general, not specific to this year.

So, no pneumatic gears other then the compressor? And no other material?

These days pneumatics are generally only included in FIRST Choice. In any given year, I would say maybe half of teams actually use pneumatics, so including them in the KoP for everyone like they used to would be a little wasteful. Rookies still get everything veterans get, they just get a few additional items that veterans are expected to keep and reuse from one year to the next.

Ok... I thought it included enough stuff to build a robot (a simple one but still :) ).

Many of the pneumatic items are either in the veteran KOP or in FIRST Choice. Same for other material--it's a KOP frame (as a rookie team, you generally cannot decline that for the PDV!), motors, and other items, the same as the veteran KOP.

I'll try to make things a little simpler: The Rookie KOP is the Veteran KOP with a control system and compressor (and possibly a couple of other items)--but to the best of my knowledge, the exact makeup for the 2016 season has not been announced.

The usual disclaimer about what has happened in previous season is not guaranteed to happen in this season applies as always. Disclaimer aside here are the differences in the rookie kit for previous seasons.

Rookie teams get in addition to the veteran kit:

A full control system, in this case a Roborio, Voltage Regulator Module, Pneumatics Control Module, Power Distribution Panel, Router

A full pneumatics system, albiet a basic one: compressor, bag of fittings, solenoid, pneumatics hose.

Extra motors and motor controllers.

Netbook

Last season rookie teams were allowed to opt out of the kit chassis and receive a product voucher, though I always recommend that rookie teams get and use the kit chassis.

My bet is that teams will be able to opt out of the kit chassis again this season, though I have absolutely no information confirming that.

Can someone please explain to me the FIRST Choice? I know my brother has tried to explain it in the past but I can't remember how it works. Thanks in advance!

You get points which can be used to "buy" things (batteries, motors... Game parts).

Stuff that there isn't enough of for every KOP--or that is in high demand and short supply--is put in FIRST Choice and assigned a certain credit value. Teams put in a list of what they want from that "pile". Teams have a quantity of credits.

After a certain point, a computer goes in and figures out based on the lists/items/credits which team gets which items. (Teams are in random order, as I recall.)

When c-RIOs were a thing, a fresh control system was included in the veteran KOP as well as the rookie KOP. Am I missing something new?

Nope, something old. I think you're thinking of the IFI system. Let's see if I can break this down.
  • IFI system (to 2008): New control system--controller, radio, operator interface, etc.--every year in the KOP. Opportunity to purchase more (as spares).
  • cRIO (2009-2014): New control system for everybody in 2009; new required elements for everybody on introduction. Otherwise, rookies got it free and everybody else could buy it for a discount once a year.
  • RoboRIO (2015-????): New control system for everybody in 2015. New radio for everybody in 2016 (this from the blog postings). Opportunity to buy at a discount continues, IIRC; rookies get the system free.

That was back in the IFI days. When the cRIO came out, the cRIO was given to veterans only once, and every year after rookies got one. Same with the roboRIO and 2015+ control system.

As far as I'm aware, this has not been officially confirmed.

While the cRIO itself wasn't included in the veteran KOP after 2009, pretty much every other component (with the exception of the solenoid breakout board) was. This included the PDP, analogue breakout board, digital sidecar, and router, IIRC. FIRST has given no indication that this will change (and I doubt it will), but that doesn't mean it won't.

EDIT: After looking into this further, it seems the only router FIRST gave to veterans more than once was the most recent model (DAP-1522b), which they gave out to us the last 3 years. Regardless, we'll all be getting a new one in this year's KOP as was pointed out earlier.
