Curiously enough, Dawgma has kept a record of our robot names and reasoning through the years, which is how I know some names/reasons that were around far before I joined the team. Here they are, as best I remember:

2006: Dawgma I
Pretty self-evident. We didn't continue the naming convention.

2007: Deuce
Named for its dual function/versatility.

2008: Galactus
Named after a comic book character, the "Devourer of Worlds" - we thought the trackball was world-like, 'cause it was so big.

2009: Alice
Named after Randy Pausch's teaching tool, a computer program that taught kids how to program. Our team had been influenced by Randy Pausch in our early years, through Rich Kressly, our founding mentor.

2010: Darwin
Something about how our program was evolving...
I don't quite remember.

2011: Geoffrey
We thought that our elevator would look like a giraffe as it telescoped up to score tubes. Reality proved our thinking wrong.

2012: Darryl
Now I know a bit more backstory about this one. We named Darryl after a star player on Lower Merion's basketball team - but there's more to it than that. Lower Merion has a storied basketball tradition, in fact, Kobe Bryant came from LM. How, you might ask yourself, did 1712 let this robot go by without naming it "Robe Bryant"? Not only did we have an actual reason to name our robot after Kobe, but his people had even given us permission! Eventually, I believe we decided against it to avoid associating ourselves with some of Kobe's off the court actions.

2013: Oddjob
Named after the James Bond character who throws his hat like a frisbee.

2014: Peter the Great Egg
A consensus name, we literally mashed together the two names that had exactly equal support: Peter the Great, and Eggy. Peter the Great came because Peter the Great had founded St. Petersburg in 1712, and Eggy came from the way our robot treated the ball.

2015: Kaylee
"Shiny"! We named Kaylee after the Firefly character of the same name, who often said that things were "Shiny". One of our programmers mentioned in passing how shiny the robot looked, and the name stuck. Though I should mention that Kaylee did not actually receive the majority of votes for a name; our captain wisely vetoed "OG Forklift".

Torbots use names that have, or can be mis-typed to have, TOR in them.

Given the game this year, "JaniTOR" was a natural fit.

Keep in mind our team name is the Channel Cats so we like to use fishy names. We also like to use something related to the game or build season.


2002 - WIB (What Isn't Broken).

2010 - Chum Chucker also Chummy for short (the game was soccer).

2012 - Bascat (A Bass is a fish) (Cat goes with Channel Cats) (and it's a play on words for Basket since the game was basketball).

2013 - Fishbee (It has fish in it) (also a play on words for frisbee).

2014 - Chum Chucker II.

2015 - TAD Pole (Named for one of the acronyms we used early on in build season for the Tote Manipulation Device) (also a Tadpole is a little like a fish).

We've stuck with the theme that the real robot has to have an Aussie themed name while the prototype can have a funny name. Generally the prototype robot's name is determined by whatever becomes adopted, we never officially decide on it. In contrast, we create a spreadsheet where anyone can add potential names for the real robot. These names are then voted on by the whole team before adoption.

In the past we've had:
2010 - Wombot
2011 - That's Not A Knife(called T-NAK) and mini-bot spoon
2012 prototype - Mothslayer (One night while testing a moth dropped out of the air after we shot the ball!)
2012 - MATE (stands for MATE and the Engineers)
2013 prototype - 10 CIMs
2013 - Ikara (Aboriginal for throwing stick)
2014 prototype - Enterprise (The original catapult looked a bit like the star ship)
2014 - Maloo (Aboriginal for thunder)
2015 prototype - Cockroach (It looked like it had antenna)
2015 - Kosciuszko (the tallest mountain in Australia)

Prior to 2011, robots went unnamed

2011: Ducky. Robot was cute, small, and harmless on the field.
2012: Sue. Named to honor our Lead Mentor's wife's contributions to the team, by putting up with our lead mentor's regular late nights.
2013: Link. Had an absurdly large linkage, which could probably do just as much damage as it's Nintendo namesake.
2014: Sailor Peg. Dropkick Murphy's reference. First year of New England districts, built with the intent of "Shipping up to Boston" for NE Champs, to "find it's wooden leg" (first and last 1687 robot with no wood onboard aside from bumpers). Sadly, it only shipped to Boston for offseasons.
2015: Whiteout. New team with white as a predominant color, and built in the most snow-impacted season I've ever been a part of.

2012- Mr. T Students voted on it. Mostly likely because it was our initials (Mech Tech)
2013-Robud was our fall mock-build robot and Robro was the competition bot's name.
2014- we started building twin robots so the practice bot we named silver because we did not anodize its pieces. The competition robot we named Event Horizon (the closest distance before light can no long escape a blackhole) because it was anodized black and we played great defense (no escaping us)
2015- We built twin robots again so the practice bot was Silver II and the competition machine was named Quantum.
2016- we won't find out until week 5 of the build. Looking forward to it though

2014 - we named our robot "Flappybot" after flappy bird, because it had flapping wings that handled the ball (with great success!)
2015 - we named our robot guillotine because, well, that's what it looked like :D

As a thank you to the family of one of our mentors, our robots are always officially named by his 7 year old daughter. In no particular order we have had fluffy, pickle, muffin, bunny, and possibly one more I don't remember. I don't know that robots before then had names. Some robots have gotten nicknames based on their appearance, including Toucan Looking Backwards, Arm Bot, Tank Bot, Fish Tank, Last Year's Robot (even though it isn't anymore), and More Efficient WALL-E.

2010: Sir Lancelot, named because we are "Knight Vision" so we started out with Knights of the Round Table as our naming custom.
2011: Sir Galahad, Lancelots' son, continuing the tradition. AKA "The robot that must not be named"
2012: Sir Robin, we didn't name this robot until our second event, where our school principal came to the event and suggested it and we ran with it.
2013: Big Mike, named after Michael Oher from "The Blind Side" because we had a strong drivetrain, albeit slow (hooray, 6 CIMs!).
2014: Optimus Crime, we voted on this one, and the explanation for that one in the poll was, "Because we break walls", again because of our strong drivetrain.
2015: KITT, we were gonna go with a Knight (Vision) Rider theme for the robot and have an arduino controlled light scheme going on, but we ran out of time.

This year's bot was named Quasar after one of our more successful preseason BunnyBots from a few years back. We often go for combinations of prototype/competition bot that make sense together - my personal favorite was 2013's Dante (prototype) and Inferno (competition). We've also had Thunder/Lightning, Ash/Phoenix, Gemini/Apollo...you get the idea.

My team only picked a name one year. It was a Spartan King. Had some 23 characters and no one could remember it.
I have my own system for naming prototype bots.
It goes like this; Pick a favorite action/adventure movie actor, use one of their movie titles.
We have used:
Bandit, has its own theme song. "Watch that Bandit run..."
Rambo, Used 8" wheels
Terminator, shortened to T1 and later T2
This summer its KB1, KB2 and KB3 for Kit Bot.

Our robots are traditionally named after a mentor on the team who has been a key member of the team. Typically it is one who has been with the team for a long time. The names are usually a mash up of the name of the mentor and some aspect of the game or a phrase that represents the game. Recent names have been:

2015 - Relicylce - Ryan Reliford and Recycle
2014 - Jiminy Flick-It - Jimmy Nichols and how our robot launched the gamepiece
2013 - Flying Saunders - Susan Saunders and Frsibee game pieces

2006: The team was at a chinese buffet; my fortune cookie read "Lucky is coming your way" so we named the robot Lucky
2007: Lollipop because that's what the manipulator looked like
2008: Homer after the Hungry Hungry Hippo (and one of the school custodians)
2009: Marvin for Hitchhiker's Guide character (and space game)
2010: Mark Koors
2011: Peg because that was our manipulator
2012: Betty Hoop
2013: George because it was designed to climb
2014: Mr. Krabs because it resembled the SpongeBob character
2015: Yertle after the Dr. Seuss story (practice bot named Buttercup because it builds things up)

The name of our robot each year is almost always (unofficially) voted to be "Robusto". Then, we come up with a more reasonable name. I'm not sure if we actually have a system. We didn't have a robot name until week 3 this year I believe.

We've had a tradition for the past few years of naming our robots after gods.

2012: Libra
2013: Ursa Minor (changed to Ursa Major)
2014: Atlas
2015: Nasus

I was here when we named Nasus. So, a couple of team members play League of Legends. One of the characters is named Nasus, and one of his abilities is called Siphoning Strike. MOBA mumbo jumbo aside, the move STACKS damage, and it seemed appropriate that we named our robot after the "stacking god."
