There is a local high school band that raises money for uniforms by raffling a car. One the new student's father buys those tickets every year and told us about it.

We wanted to include the tax but it seems that is very much against the rules. The value of the car is "ordinary income" so the tax rate would depend on the tax bracket of the winner. Plus there is Texas sales tax.

Will you guys be updating the thread with how many tickets were sold?

Also did you guys end up getting the car donated or did you guys purchase it at a discounted rate?

One of the tricky parts of Texas law is that you must be "in possession" of the raffle prize. In our case we have a strategic partner in North Central Ford of Richardson, Texas. North Central Ford is, of course, "in possession" of the car and was quite generous with the terms. So when the prize is won, it is a particular VIN Mustang and the buyer must take possession of that car. But North Central Ford will be very accommodating, making in-kind transactions to upgrade etc.

We are checking ticket sales every Monday morning, 210 raffle tickets officially sold as of Monday 10/19! But there are many more sold and not tallied yet.

Students who hand in ten tickets in any given week are eligible to receive a nice prize! Help them out and buy a ticket!

Thanks John - good to hear from you! I hear you are starting to interview - make sure you include Dallas!

I can't take credit for the raffle, we have some incredible robo-moms and booster club support this year!

This is pretty cool!

We did something similar our 1st year of existence back in 2000 to raise funds to attend the California regional in San Jose.

We follow 359 pretty closely - an inspiration to 1296 and many other FIRST teams!

Re: FRC Team 1296 Car Raffle!

The raffle has nearly 600 tickets sold, looks like selling the minimum of 800 before December 12 is certain!

By your tickets now!! We are only selling 2500 tickets - hard to day but I doubt we'll get all the way to 2500 making your chances of winning much better!

Re: FRC Team 1296 Car Raffle!

Oops! We had a little trouble with PayPal guidelines and the web site was down for a day. All is now working! Get your ticket!

We will sell enough to buy the car but we will NOT reach 2500! So the chances of winning are multiplied! Get your ticket today!

Re: FRC Team 1296 Car Raffle!

I've had several PM inquiries into the process of setting up the raffle so I thought I'd post...

... we got lucky with the legal stuff. Texas has a statute called the Charity Raffles Act of 1999 and my son is a both an EE (and former FIRST team member) and a lawyer. So we didn't have to pay for legal advice. There were many requirements:

1 - You had to have 3 years of records as a charitable organization.

2 - You had to be 501(c)(3).

3 - No more than 2 raffles per year.

4 - No paid advertising and no state-wide advertising. But the use of social media was explicitly allowed.

5 - $50,000 prize limit

6 - You have to own or possess the prize. This necessitated a legal relationship with the sponsoring car dealer.

7 - The tickets had to have specific information on them.

8 - The drawing is a hard date, must be advertised, and can only be extended once for no more that thirty days and only because you are unable to award the prize on that day.

9 - We chose to engage a CPA firm to track the tickets and draw the prize. This allowed all team members and their families to participate.

Then we had to make sure we were not running afoul of any school system regulations since we are a school-based team.

These are the points that I remember, no doubt there are more. If I can help anyone, please let me know.

HTH

Re: FRC Team 1296 Car Raffle!

Hey - we are getting in the 1,000 tickets sold territory but some of those are being distributed and collected through corporate infrastructures (so not really sure). There is no way we'll reach 1,500 tickets sold, 1,250 is s more realistic target.

So your chances of winning are 2X the original number (with 2500 tickets sold). $25 for a 1 in 1,250 chance of winning a new Mustang! Get your tickets today!

I'll post the winner here and on our web site just after the drawing!

Ok cool! Just so you know, 'Stachyra' is pronounced like the desert Sahara, but with a "T". I don't want you to look silly when you announce the winner...:)
