Hello Chief Delphi,

This thread is meant to be the 2016 version of this thread. This is a place for high school seniors in the FIRST community to post the colleges and/or military programs they're applying to, and then come back to edit them once they fully know where they will be going!

I'll start. I'm applying to:

WPI
Carnegie Mellon
Caltech
MIT
RIT
University of Texas at Arlington

Going to Michigan Tech (already accepted)
Applied to University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Iowa State (accepted). some of these lists make me feel like I'm underacheiving:(

Re: FIRST Class of 2016: Where are we going?

Applying to:
University of Michigan Ann Arbor
Carnegie Mellon University
Stanford University (ea)
Princeton University
Harvard College
Rice University
Yale University
University of Pennsylvania (possibly)
Caltech (possibly)
MIT (possibly) (didn't want to because their app process is long but I'm getting harassed by them over my SAT2 scores)
WPI (possibly)
Michigan Tech (possibly)

(Might be missing a couple. All the possibles are ones who's apps I haven't done yet. If I get accepted to any one of those besides Ann Arbor i won't send any more )

I'm just shotgunning all the schools that will be able to give me a full ride based on financial aid.. I already have enough work experience that going somewhere small like LTU won't really help my career.

Why are you EAing to more than one college? From my experience and the college students I've talked to, that's usually considered taboo.

Early Action is non-binding, so applying to as many schools as possible who offer this option is a non-issue and, depending on the school's perception of its early applicants, can be favorable. I personally applied Early Action to three schools, one of which I am attending now (Georgia Tech). If the option exists, you should take it in most cases.

Early Decision is a "binding" commitment to enroll if accepted early, hence why it is taboo to apply to multiple schools ED.

Early Action is just the college considering applications on an earlier timeframe than Regular Decision; nothing wrong with applying to multiple schools EA.

I think it is acceptable to apply to multiple schools EA, its Early Decision that is "taboo" because that one is contractually binding, but Early Action isn't.

Applying early decision to multiple schools isn't good because you're agreeing to go there if you get in. Most schools don't care if you apply to multiple schools early action, but some schools (Yale, Harvard, and Stanford for example) now have single choice or restrictive early action that "restrict" you from applying early in any way to any other school if you choose to apply to their early action program.

How colleges can actually enforce restrictive early action is a mystery to me.

I've been accepted to Purdue University (West Layfayette) and Michigan Tech already, but I've sent applications to Michigan State, DePaul, Saint Mary's, Western Michigan, and University of Minnesota (Twin Cities).

I didn't realize so many people were interested in U of M-TC and Purdue! I hope to see some of you next fall.

Re: FIRST Class of 2016: Where are we going?

Congrats on being college bound everyone! I'd like to offer a piece of advice if I may. Apply early (non-binding most likely) for as many colleges as you can. I applied to six of my eight potential schools early, and the other two were only done regular decision because they only offered early decision, not early action.

Because of this, I was able to at least have an idea of where I was going before the regular decision applications were due, so I could make adjustments to my application list if I needed to, and also I had a ton of pressure taken off during the spring, which I was able to spend applying for scholarships instead of last-minute college apps. And as a side note, I had an acceptance letter and knew I was going to at least some college by mid-November, and there was one acceptance letter that made for one heck of a Christmas present. Early applications are a wonderful way to show schools that you are interested, spread out your workload, and avoid a lot of the stress of the application process. 10/10 would recommend.

Also, shameless plug here, feel free to PM me about the application process, as well as any questions you may have about Notre Dame, a school that I would recommend to literally anybody. Best of luck to y'all!

I applied and was accepted to Metropolitan Community College. I plan on spending two years there, I have a scholarship that pays for two years of community college. After those two years I hope to get into UMKC to get a BA in statistics.
