Team Standards Design
1 Attachment(s)
I haven't found a thread yet for all of the standards that teams have made to get suggestions. I have no background in design but I figured that I would take a crack at it. Everyone should post their standards below and if anyone has any tips they are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :D
(This is in no way my teams final banner, I haven't even pitched the idea yet.) |
Re: Team Standards Design
I'm pitching for us to have a black banner with a large version of our logo on it. On the back we'll have a smaller logo with sponsors. Might make custom streamers for events we win, but that's about it.

This is my first draft at a team standard that I threw together, because I love the idea! It's a bit bland, so any suggestions to improve would be most appreciated (This also hasn't been pitched to the team, and is only in it's first stages of development)

Good effort Jake, I appreciate your initiative. Personally, my idea was to have Azure charged with the head of a robot Argent, four plates around made to look like moons, over a 3 point label Or

Here's a preliminary design we've made.

Re: Team Standards Design
I've been thinking about starting to put together a preliminary design for my team's standard. However, for most of the day, I only have access to a chromebook. Does anybody know of any Chrome Web apps that might be helpful to me for designing this?

Re: Team Standards Design
Our former lead teacher put up an interesting link that made me completely rethink using out team logo in our standard,

Anyone designing a flag may want to take a look at this guide from the North American Vexillological Association.
https://nava.org/navanews/Commission...t-Final-US.pdf Basic Tips Simple design: avoid small details hard to distinguish from a distance Colors: choose a few colors that contrast well No text: looks cleaner Unique: choose a design that is immediately recognizable |
Re: Team Standards Design
Totally unofficial, of course - we had several ideas presented this evening that were pretty cool. My idea of using the outline of our logo for the tails got a few positive nods. My idea was posted on CD-Media, and is my avatar until the team picks one for real.

I have to confess the first time I saw "Vexillological" I said "Yep, seen that, illogical designs of VEX robots, good to know there is a word." Can't wait to see how simple and clean some of these designs will be. |

Re: Team Standards Design
I dunno, I think MOST teams are gonna have their logo covered on their shirts, while their number is still gonna be displayed there on the drivers' station panel anyways. Having a cool, custom design for your standard seems like a no-brainer to me.

There's probably a better place to post this, but I stumbled across this TED talk about flag design, and thought others might enjoy, and hopefully some team standards will benefit.

Re: Team Standards Design
What studios are you guys using to make your standard designs? I'm going to try gimp, just wondering if there was any particular software that worked great for anyone?

I would recommend all teams buy themselves a creative cloud subscription. It's really worth it for these sorts of applications and with the student discount its pretty cheap.

Re: Team Standards Design
What are you folks using for the actual vertical & horizontal poles to meet the 1/2" OD criteria?
No PVC pipe is exactly 1/2". The closest I found was very flimsy hot water tank material. (Pex). I think I've finally come to the conclusion that we should resort to using 1/2" OD wooden dowels to meet all FIRST criteria. Am I missing something or am I heading in the right direction?? |

I suspect we'll see either be 1/2" dowel or 1/2" OD aluminum tubing from a lot of teams. |

Even pvc pipe named 1/4" is coming up with a .540" OD dimension. I just bought some Oak 1/2" Wooden Dowels for use on ours, and we'll make a custom fitting to attach the 3 poles (2 horizontal & 1 vertical) together with our EXOCYCLE 3D printer we received last year through the FIRST linked donation. I cringe every time I see the Standard criteria drawing since there really is no fitting to link 3 poles together like the way shown in the "sample". I also think a lot of teams will (mistakenly) be making their standard out of "1/2in." PVC pipe not realizing it's the ID dimension, and not the required OD dimension. We shall see... |

Re: Team Standards Design
Our team designed this double-sided standard, with these dimensions. Also, just so Starwarsguy2 (and others) know, I've already started a thread similar to this one.

Here's our team standard this year; we have different shapes for the front and back as part of our design. I'm happy with how ours turned out and how others are looking! They'll definitely be an exciting visual implement for the game this year. :]

This is the crest-like image I designed for my team's standard. Everyone keeps saying it reminds them of the communist hammer and sickle, which was unintentional, albeit still a cool comparsion. The omega is a symbol we commonly use, as we are Team Resistance, and the roman numerals add up to our team number, 86.
