Jobs...

What are some of the jobs people have during the summer or during school?

I just got hired at Rolls-Royce doing data entry for $10per hour. It's a full time job with ability to do part time during school. Lot better than mowing grass;)

Jeff Rodriguez 04-07-2002 23:36

I'm still working at a crappy department store they call Ames.

mtaman02 04-07-2002 23:41

about two weeks ago i applied for a job at an ice cream parlor down by the beach that i live near. so far i havnt recieved any replies but i am hoping to get the job because where could i find a better place to work? i get to eat ice cream and hang out at the beach all day.

Ian W. 05-07-2002 10:12

i was going to be a camp counsler, but my science/research teacher would have nothing of it (for those of you who know mrs champey, she can be very intimidating ;)). so, she gave me an application for BNL (Brookhaven National Labs) for a summer research position. so, starting monday, i'm working there. i don't get paid though :(.

for money, i seem to be doing odd jobs around the neighbor hood. one thing, i babysit most sunday mornings, cause my mom and her friend go running. so, i watch my mom's friend's 3 kids (two boys are 11, one girl is 8 or 9) and make about 20 bucks that way. then, i got an even stranger job. one of the friend's of another of my mom's friend's (this is getting annoying, isn't it) is going away. they have some animals, two goats, a pony, and a bunch of chickens. so, someone needs to feed the animals every day. who gets the call? i do. so, i get to play 'farmer ian' for the next few days, but i made 60 bucks. then, my aunt's boyfriend needed someone to copy and paste names into the contact cards in microsoft outlook for his business. who do they ask? of course, me. so, i can make somewhere between $100 and $200 from that. i think i'm actually making more money than i would have as a counsler :D, and all of the money is off the books, so i actually get to keep it all ;).

Adam Y. 05-07-2002 10:20

not many places hire at 15:( besides i haven't the foggiest what I what to be in the future let alone now ooo well.

Katie Reynolds 05-07-2002 11:11

Haha, don't worry wysiswyg, working's no fun anyway - unless you're doing something you'll enjoy... which not many people do at the age of 15/16/17 lol.

Anyway, yeah - I'm a "utility clerk" (fancy name for 'bagger') at a local grocery store. I get $6.25/hour... the only nice part about it is I get paid 1 1/2 time for holidays and Sundays. I need a new job!!

D.J. Fluck 05-07-2002 12:29

E. The Kidd 05-07-2002 12:44

I work for Putumayo World Music (has anyone heard of this place?). Anyway, I'm applying to several stores around the city so that i can make more money and get more hours

ChrisA 05-07-2002 13:12

im proud to say that for the past 2 years (well 2 years in sept) i have been working at a Mail Boxes Etc.
it has to be one of the best places to work at and i must have like the best employer and manager that are out there... i mean how many of you can leave work half an hour early and still get paid for that half hour?
if you are looking for a job and there is one in the area i would recommend it... the hours are nice, the people that come in are nice, and if ur lucky the manager is nice

Judy 05-07-2002 14:29

Alright, I heard someone was applying to work in ice cream... don't! Run away and fast! I work in an ice cream place at the mall(many of you have probably heard about this) minimum wage for working in a hole in the wall with no chance of increase. Remember, food business=working with people... hungry people, hungry people are rude and complacient. It's not fun. Trust me. I've been working there for a year and a month and some of the stories I have would turn you out of the ice cream bus soo fast! Anywayz, stay cool. Have fun... I'll be the one reading in the ice cream booth all summer! lol
*hugz to all as alwayz*
Ann-Marie -team 783
PS. It's not all bad, the other part timers are nice and one of the bosses when he's in a good enuff mood is hilarious.. makes fun of customers!

Great. Another Best Buy Idiot. :D

Me? I've worked at a Days Inn hotel as a Front Desk person for the last 2 years (started when I was 16)... sure, I only make 7.00 an hour, but the benefits kick arse... by benefits I mean... when I work during school season, I can do homework on the job. Also, they have a nice TV in the lobby that I can watch when there's nothing else to do (hehe... find myself watching it a lot)...

Too bad they only have basic cable :( No "extra" channels :D

Right now I'm waiting to hear back from R Sabee Corp... I'll be making 11.25 an hour manufacturing hospital supplies :P

It's a summer job only so I'll have a job for the next 4 years when I come back from college for summer break.

A. Leese 05-07-2002 19:12

I work at a doctor's office as a..er..well..I'll leave out the title DJ gave my job..I file charts, make new charts, and that's pretty much it..fun, huh? they don't even let me answer phones or make appointments or anything..oh well..it's 7.50 and hour and the office is on a really pretty part of the river so i just kinda sit and stare out at it during my *lovely* 20 hours of work a week..

Kyle Gilbert 05-07-2002 19:55

Better watch out calling yourself that before the IEEE sues you :p

CaptainPlaid 07-07-2002 01:02

Well.....during the last two school years and summers I worked at my school as a network technician. Pay sucks but it was really easy.
The cool thing though is that on Monday (6.8.02) I start at Bose Corporation. That's right. Wave radios, Cadillacs and Benzs. Little plug here: Check out kettering university if you are serious about engineering. The only school I know of where you can start your co-op job before you actually go to school at all..

I have two jobs this summer. I still work at a library which I have done for almost 5 years now. I'm a computer assistant. Plus I have a full time internship at Symbol Technologies (they're the people that make barcode scanners). I'm in the ME dept and what I pretty much do is design stuff, put them together, break them...ermm...I mean, "test" them, then take 'em apart to see what I broke. I must've broke over $20,000 worth of stuff already. Teehee. Plus, we're already starting to plan the 2003 LI Regiona, which feels like a 3rd job sometimes. :) But I like it.

Matt Attallah 07-07-2002 14:14

Shoesales men rule!!! :D I work at Sports Authority, and i was getting 6.75/hr, but i got a raise!! To...7.02/hr. Yay... (P.S. I work in the Footwear Department)

This September will be the beginning of my fifth year at the Victorian Guest House a bed and breakfast. Pay sucks, but I can do my own thing like homework while I am waiting for people to check in or waiting for a load of laundry to get done. The food is great that is left over from breakfast, and the TV is my friend during the down season.

My Job

Well, I work at this camp, it is open all year, but in the winter it is only open on weekends, and during the summer, we have people there all the time. I work in the kitchen preparing food for the people. This is a Jewish camp, where jewish people come to have their retreats. It is cool to learn about Jewish things, cuz I am not Jewish, actually none of the kitchen staff are Jewish. We all watch them do their singing and dancing and stuff like that. The good parts of my job are we get to eat any food we like, and there are sometimes when we can just chill out cuz there is nothing to do. The bad parts of my job are we have to clean all the rooms, sweep and everything. We have to do dishes. Also we have to put up with crabby people. They come up to the kitchen and ask us for stuff they are not supposed to have. And then when you tell them that they can't have it, they get all crabby on you. Another bad part is that you get hit on a lot by these people. It wouldn't be so bad, but they come up to you and say the gayest things, and it gets really annoying. Oh, another thing is that, some of these people speak Hebrew, and they speak it in front of you and you constantly feel like they are talking about you. Not only that, but some people don't know english very well, and sometimes you can't understand them. Oh well, it is ok. Oh another bad thing is that during the summer, the floor gets so slippery. Especially in the dish room. Ugh, I was in the dish room last night, and I was trying to be careful not to fall, well I guess i was not careful enough, and I slipped and fell right on my butt, and it hurt, and on the way down I smashed my hand on this spikey thing that was on the floor. So...this girl that was in the dish room with me told me to go sit down. So i was a little embarrassed. Not fun. Well my hand did end up swelling up a little bit, but it is ok now, just a little bruised. But other than that, it is a good job. Well there is another thing, but I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. My boss knows my whole family, on my dads side, because my grandma used to work for him. So...that is really interesting. Oh well, it sucks but it is money, which is something we all need...so I will stick with it.

So I've worked there for 2 weeks now and I already want a new job. I think I'd rather drive down to Kokomo every day to work at the new Best Buy than work at Wal-Mart. NEVER WORK THERE THEY MAKE YOU CHEER. Give me a W... W!!! Give me an A... A!!! yeah you get the picture.

Ashley Weed 10-07-2002 16:08

Thought I should share something that happened at work today:

I was boared, because I had to wait for people to check out before I could begin cleaning the rooms. There were a few magazines sitting on the piano, and I thought I would keep myself occupied for awhile. I walked over, and the magazine on top was a TIME magazine from December of 2001. It was opened to a full size picture of Dean on a Segway. One of the guests must have read the article on Dean, I thought that was cool being if you talk to anyone within a 2 hour radius of here, you have a chance of 1 in 5,000 of someone knowing who Dean is. Sorry for my ranting I am boared!

Ian W. 10-07-2002 18:31

lol, don't feel bad. similar thing happened to me at my 'job'. my mentor was working with some teachers, so i sat in, and one of the teachers mentioned he helped out with a FIRST team. i had to hold myself back from talking and talking about FIRST :D.

Katie_269 10-07-2002 22:58

Bad night at work!!

Well i had the worste night at work the other night. I get to work at 3...and find out our dish machine broke. So we have dished piled up in our dish room from 3 meals. It is a disaster...at least 4 hours worth of dishes. Well the guy who always fixes our dish machine could not fix it, so we had to call an electrician. So the electrician comes and fixes the stupid thing in like 5 minutes. It was so depressing. So there were like 5 of us in there trying to whip these dishes through. Then we had to serve dinner. Then after dinner we had 3 people in ther me included. Well our floors in the kitchen have been so slippery these days because it has been so hot, and the dish room floor is always slippery because it gets wet from the dishes. So...I am in there trying to hurry up, and get some of these dishes done...well i try and step over something, and the next thing i know, my butt slams on the floor. I slipped. It hurt so bad...oh and not to mention i smashed my had on this spikey thing that we put our dishes in to go through our dish machine. So now today my hand is nice and bruised, and that night...no we did not get all the dishes done. Oh well...LOL...What a night...

Whoo hoo! Go Sports Authority (Or as we employees call it, TSA). I'm a cashier at store number 522 in Hampton, Virginia. Except I only get paid $6.25 an hour!!

I work as a lifeguard for a pool in Torrance (Los Angeles) I get paid $8.00 an hour to sit around and do pretty much nothing, although b/c i am an EMT if something bad does happen, i have to be the person to usually handle it. But its good work and i enjoy it. Hopefully though i will get a job as an EMT on an "AMR" ambulance in the inner city soon.

Michael Murphy 13-07-2002 02:31

I get to celebrate the end of my six-week lack of internet access with...this post. Wow, isn't that anticlimatic? Oh well...

I'm sort of a supervisor at Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins. I make about $7.25 an hour plus tips. The tips almost make the male cow dung I have to put up with worthwhile. They add up to about $50-60 a week that the IRS never finds out about. Ahh, well, working any time after 3 is a breeze, and the people on my side of the counter aren't bad. ...now if there were only a way to get rid of the customers....;)

Carolyn Duncan 14-07-2002 18:29

Try explaining to a person that they are not getting a satellite picture on their television because there is a hurricane outside... better yet when there was a tornado the day before and they get mad because their dish moved in the high winds so there is no signal for them to see. The best one is when they say they can't see a pic ture and you tell them to walk up to the tv and press the power button and magically a picture appears. My favorite is the people who haven't paid their bill in months and complain that they arent getting any picture. Heh guess what I do. "Thank you for calling Dish Network how may I help you?" It's not so bad, at least we get to play soccer while we are on the phones. I mean tat we pay close attention to our customers and never derrive from their call so as to best help our customers and solve their problems as quickly as possible. I applied for a promotion and I'm hoping that I can hit up the company for sponsorship this year...

Specialagentjim 27-07-2002 15:27

My job's pretty cool, but u gotta like doing it (like i do!). Im an Intern @ the West Palm Beach State Attorney's Office: Information Resources department (big name, huh?). Basically, im a network admin intern. Pay's not bad but the best part is i get to learn all about how a professional network runs. We've got a pretty kickin network up there (One of our consultant's commented that we have they kind of network to support 10,000 users, we support 400, heh). Win 2k/Novell/Linux...

If this sounds cool to ya, go to ur local place and volunteer for somin like spring or winter break, if they like you, they might hire you...thats wut i did! (This is now my second summer working here, hehe) Good luck to yall, c'ya lata

BTW, ANIMATION TEAM RULES!!!!!

Chris Nowak 28-07-2002 12:01

My Job

I'm working at Johnson Controls this summer as kind of an intern, doing Computer Animation, which I got interested in b/c of FIRST. It is stressful at times but Its excellent job experience, so I'm not really complaining.

ggoldman 28-07-2002 13:36

I have been interning at a civil engineering firm since last summer. It is a really good job. Right now I am finalizing some plans on a sewage pump station that is going to be built in goochland county, here in virginia. It is kinda cool to be 18 and allready have 2 years of CAD experience under my belt. And it is fun to work with architechs, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers. And when i say work with, I mean I am actually doing work. I had to design some HVAC systems and lots and lots of revisions on the 56 sheets in this project. I also do 3d animation for them when the CAD work is light. The pay is awesome too. Right now i make 10/hr and get a 401(k). They allready asked me to come back next summer after my freshmen year in college.

Also, I do a lot of volunteering for FIRST. I go with the regional coordinator to talk to people who are interested in FIRST.

Job

I have worked at this Italian Sandwich place during most of the summer, and recently I was hired as a clerk at the Corps of Engineers.

Beast314 04-08-2002 05:40

I'm working a mill job for the summer. $9.25/hour plus time and a half for anything over 40 hours. Working a 12 hours swing shift kind of bites the big one though. Just under a month to go, than college. Gotta keep telling myself that one.

DanLevin247 04-08-2002 19:54

I work at Target, worked 10 hours in today in fact, and had quite the worst day of my life there today. One of my many managers hates me for no reason, and I think she's going to try to get me fired. Ugh, don't you ever have one of those times where you'd like to gouge someone's eyes out?
