Hi everyone!

(if someone started this thread this year and I totally missed it, please let me know...I couldn't find it)

It was brought to my attention that nobody started a Christmas card thread this year. I'll take the blame for that - I dropped off the face of the robot earth when I went to college in 2011, and never officially passed off the torch. Sorry guys! ::ouch::

However, this is a longstanding tradition (over 10 years!), and it would be a shame for it to die. Therefore, we're going to hobble along this year and try to still make it happen!

Usually, this thread is started at the end of November, and we have two or three weeks for sign-ups, but there's just not time for that this year...so we're going to roll with whatever we can get in about a week (details below). Cards will likely be arriving after all the traditional holidays, but I don't think anyone will mind - the point is to have fun, get some mail, and spread a little cheer before build season drives us crazy!

And now, the usual info!:



A book of stamps is currently: $9.80 USD (Same price as last year!)

Since it takes two stamps to mail to Canada, Canadians please make sure to sign up for 2 spots.

In past years, the limit was 40 sign-ups. It's been a while since we hit that limit, and I doubt we'll hit it this year due to late-ness, but just in case...we're maxing out at 40.

Spread the word! Tell your friends, tell your enemies, tell your robot. It’s a lot of fun when a lot of people sign up! Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, you are welcome to participate! Cards of all kind are welcome.

The deadline for sign-ups is going to be Sunday, December 20, 2015. This means that you must PM me your address before 11:59pm on 12/20. I will send out a reminder PM on 12/19 if you have signed up but have not sent me your address, but it will make both of our lives easier if you just send it as soon as you sign up. I'll send out the address list on the 21st.

Obviously, we can't track you down and force you to send cards--but try to avoid being a spoilsport. Don’t forget to send them, and don't put them off until the last minute!

And yes, this means the other folks involved will get a physical address (via PM), so check with the parents as applicable.

Cards will hopefully be arriving between now and just into the new year, so if you have multiple addresses (i.e. college kids), keep that in mind when sending me your address! If this applies to you, please also include instructions if you want cards sent to a different address after a certain date.

So, if you're in for this year, add your name to the list and PM me your address. Hope to see your name in my mailbox soon!


Note: If anyone plans on sending out festivus poles this year (coughBillfredcough), or other non-standard objects, make sure that the packaging will withstand the mailing process.

You get to mail everyone on the list a card. Likewise, you'll also get a card from everyone.

Edit: This morning I was trying to figure out what to send as the card swap will be too late for Christmas. The planets align -- I'm allergic to New Year's, so the next holiday for me most years is FIRSTmas. This year, with kickoff shoved back to the 9th, it's Twelfth Night, the traditional beginning of the Carnival season. I'll be sending Mardi Gras throws. Now I just need to figure out a shipping budget to figure out how much to unload send everybody.

Got home after the holidays to find a few cards shoved (literally - see attached) in my mailbox...which is funny, since my mail was supposed to be held last week until I got back. Hopefully the rest actually arrive, and arrive in a less crumpled condition. Looking great so far though!

I've also had one person already PM me letting me know that their cards haven't been sent out yet, but they'll be going out this week, so FYI. I'm sure we'll all still be receiving some through kickoff.

Getting the stuff to lie flat in an envelope took a bit of engineering, but I got them all stuffed over the weekend. I sent all of the U.S. ones today at the automated kiosk at the Slidell main post office; I'll get the Canadian ones tomorrow at the post office across the street from my office. I'm not opening any until mine are away, but I have about half so far.

Edit (obviously):
Kickoff is FIRSTmas and FRC's new year and Festivus and Twelfth Night and a bunch of other holidays all rolled into one!

I'm having the same issue - my cards will likely end up being a "Happy Kickoff" holiday card more than a Christmas card...

Some of my cards are out. But by "out" I mean I put them in the mailbox late on New Year's Eve. Meaning, technically they're probably still sitting in the mailbox right this moment. :( I have another batch here ready to go out tomorrow.

The contract post office across the street did not open today, but I went back to Slidell this afternoon and mailed the Canadian packages. Unfortunately, one of my U.S. envelopes was returned to me without a mailing label. I do not know which one fell off, so please let me know if you do not receive my ~8"x10" padded envelope full of carnival goodies by this time next week.

The hours spent stuffing those envelopes (including the engineering* as well as execution) are now officially worth it! I almost put the tiny dominoes back after picking up the glittery ones, so very glad I left them in the basket!

* And OBTW, thanks to the good folks at AndyMark who helped with that engineering processs by providing some flat pieces of cardboard in my bumper material and battery tray order that, by being half again too large to fit in the DVD mailer, inspired the solution of putting the glittery nose in the middle.

So.... I'm ashamed that I'm so late to the party, but I just sent mine out. All should arrive in good order, but as there is a small object included, let me know if there appears to be any damage. Also, they pale in comparison to the swell cards I have received (perhaps I'm not cut out for this). Enjoy!

Hey, better late than never! I'm looking forward to getting mail that isn't related to taxes, bills, or airlines trying to convince me to get another credit card to boost my frequent flier miles.
