New Regional Wish List

FIRST is still growing so there will surely be more regionals next year. Where would you like the next regional to be? Anyone know where some new ones will be for sure?

Bill Gold 19-07-2002 14:33

Hawaii, San Diego, San Francisco (or another SF Bay Area city)...

Pretty much anywhere west of the Mississippi River.

Gene F 19-07-2002 17:03

South Carolina! There were 9 teams last year from SC and there are sure to be more this coming year. The nearest regionals are all 500+ miles away. It makes it tough on new and lesser supported teams from this area to get involved.

Hmm... Brazil?

:)

Pamela 19-07-2002 19:07

One of the New Regionals is definatly in Manchvegas, home of FIRST :) We're bringing it back to NH next spring!!!! I'd like to see a regional in Hawaii :) That would be very cool, plus the Hawaiin team handed out cool rock that I want more of!

Aaron Lussier 19-07-2002 20:38

Alaska:D

I know there is going to be an Arizona regional next year. Pheonix, if I remember correctly...

Yeah. It was announced at the 2002 LA Regional.

Exactly! I'd like to see an Indiana regional.

evulish 21-07-2002 00:15

How about Towanda, Pa. :) There would be more robots than locals :D

Ashley Weed 21-07-2002 00:34

actually, if it was in Towanda, the robots and spectators for the Regional combined would be more than the population of Bradford and Sullivan counties.

Mark Hamilton 21-07-2002 01:09

Does the parking lot outside my apartment count?

New Regional Request

Well, last year I made a plea to this board to get some teams from South Dakota into FIRST...and low and behold this year, there were tons of them! Sooooo this year I am now calling out to you all once again, to make an effort to convince FIRST to get a regional in South Dakota by 2004!!!!!!

BTW, Thank you to everyone in the NE area for your support in trying to convince the people at FIRST to let me announce a regional next year. I really love announcing competitions and would love more than anything to announce a regional, especially the Manchvegas regional. Whether I get to do it or not we'll see, but my thanks to all of you reguardless....oh and speaking of announcing, I will be doing River Rage 6, the oldest offseason competition in FIRST. SIGN UP FOR THIS COMPETITION!!!! The guys from Central, West, and Trinity do a wonderful job at putting on a really high class competition every year...this year promises to be as good as ever!

Peace All,
Andy Grady

just a thought, how about nats in NYC:D ....there's plenty to do...cheap hotels....lots of room....and you don't need the adults to take you anywhere

Rich Wong 22-07-2002 16:38

Yes, Nats a NYC...

Yes, I like that idea, Nats at NYC.

The best spot I can think of is the
Meadowlands Sport complex in New Jersey.
Lots of room, lots of parking, and a
short ride into New York City.

Three major airports in the area, Amtrak,
conrail, buses, etc.

You have my vote.
:D :D :D

fast frank 22-07-2002 18:21

i would love to have the nationals in NYC. just imagine a few thousand of us running around the city in bright green and orange t-shirts covered in pins. it would also be more cost effective for all of us north eastern teams. the city is just a short ride on the L.I.R.R. from here.

Joe Matt 23-07-2002 19:32

How about Richmond Virginia! WOW! It would be so close to me and...

Wait, we already have one :p

I say that one in the Mid-west is the best bet, can get lots of people from both sides of the coast.

Anthony S. 23-07-2002 20:54

For some reason, the teams in my area want one here in Huntsville, but I there are only 5 teams around and I don't think there's too much to do here and not many people would sign up, all we have is the space & rocket center (which is not THAT great) and we also have Marshall SpaceFlight Center, but would anyone out there be interested in coming to Huntsville, AL? If not I can tell the people in our area to stop trying, Cause I don't think its a good idea.

Jon K. 23-07-2002 21:34

since there are so many NE area teams there should be a southern and northern NE regional and maybe get rid of one or two because the SBPLI Long Island regional and the NYC regional are so close together and maybe there are others

We may be close by location but…. 1 the NYC regional and SBPLI regional are about the same size and not many teams go to both… and 2 if on was to be eliminated I'm not sure the other would have the space for the extra teams (not to mention it would not be cost effective for the 2 dozen or so NYC team to have to trek to LI and vice versa)

Minnie 24-07-2002 15:36

Why not Huntsville, AL?

I think Huntsville, AL could have a Regional. The more interest we have in that area the more teams can be formed. NASA/Marshall is there and many more teams could begin...

Anthony, I do know that there is not a huge amount of things to do, but there is the chance to go to more than one Regional also...think of the expense for the new teams in our area.

Anyway, possible places:

Huntsville, AL
Atlanta, Ga

Either of those would be good.

Cory 25-07-2002 01:41

Hawaii. They definitely have a hard time getting to any regional, the closest being San Jose. Airfare for one person in coach is something like $500-600 which is not cheap, especially when flying is the only way to get to a competition. Plus Hawaii would be a great place to go. But then it makes it hard for all other teams to get there.

Ashley Weed 26-07-2002 08:55

Truthfully, there are so many on the east coast, they should add more mid-land Regionals. I wonder if more England teams will evolve this year, and possibly they will have a Regional?

tchescow 22-04-2003 22:31

Brazil :D

Clanat 22-04-2003 23:34

Oregon would be a cool place for a regional. Then I could be a volunteer for it :)

Parks 22-04-2003 23:48

How about another Canadian Regional.
It's a $@#$@#$@#$@# big country, and a long distance for a lot of teams to travel to get to the Toronto area. And the Canadian Regional is already the fastest growing regional of all of them, which means there will need to be another somewhere... Montreal perhaps?

Brazil and Hawaii would be nice, but I don't know how many teams would make it to those ones.

Ricky Q. 22-04-2003 23:50

Oconomowoc, WI baby :p

AlbertW 23-04-2003 00:53

ooh. i'd like a Honolulu, HI regional :D (early spring break!)

though, looking at the map, a denver one would make sense... an how bout you move midwest to a week that's different from SVR? (our teacher's moving to minnesota, and we wanna visit him :D)

Well, Team 159 and an organization called ColoradoFIRST is working really hard to get a regional started in CO! I hope you all sign up because we've been working sooo hard, and it'll probably (really really hopefully) be here in '04. I tell you, it's a lot of work!!! But it can be done with enough persistance! It costs about $250,000 to host a regional - that's a buttload of money! And since there are only 6 teams in CO, we have to start 14 teams (we've got 4 for sures, and probaly 5 more probablies) and...well anyway, wish us luck and everyone please sign up for CO cuz it'll ROCK!!!!

regional wish list

Here's my wish list (no order):

S. Florida
Boston
Hawaii
Anywhere in Canada
England (if they get more teams over there)

there more i just cant think of them right now

P.S. I would love to have nats in NYC cause i used to live there and havent's be back in years. But, I would be even happier to see it back at EPCOT.

Koko Ed 23-04-2003 08:33

How about Rochester, NY?
We got six teams here with possibly more on the way . The only action in NY is in NYC (which is a whole other world from upstate NY). Why does there have to be 2 NYC regionals on the same weekend anyways?

Kyle 23-04-2003 11:03

how about a Delaware regional :)
it could work because DE is in the the middle of other states
and it could help people know that yes, believe it or not, Delaware is a state, yes I was asked 3 times at Nats and once the person didt believe me and walked away thinking that Delaware was a branch off of PA, hehehe that was funny, but the guy just wouldnt listin to me

Josh Hambright 23-04-2003 12:10

How about a purdue regional...

or as stated above the indianapolis regional....

Gene F 23-04-2003 13:42

Things are looking good for a South Carolina regional in 2004. Right now the plan is for USC in Columbia as the place. Who would be willing to attend?:)

"Calgree" could be a good one for the Western area.

In the East, if not Wabush, Labrador, then how about Halifax or "Newfie John"? Wabush wouldn't have to fly to TO (BIG $$$ on Air Canada, if it survives), and a Maritime regional would attract many teams that may appear there in the near future.

And how about Windsor Ont ?

kristen 23-04-2003 18:26

Yes, we need an upstate NY regional!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would be interesting to have one at Cornell, but Ithaca would also be the most boring place to have a regional.

with 12 "upstate" NY teams, one would be nice. Rochester has half of those teams & plenty of good places to have a regional. Syracuse has a couple teams & would be a cool place to go. Centrally located.

SuperDave 23-04-2003 19:00

how about las vegas....? great venues.... a good city, 4 local teams (2003), 10 State teams.... Tons of AZ and CA teams nearby. were only 5 hrs MAX from both Los Angeles and Phoenix. see my thread: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...threadid=20240
cheap and easy airfare and hotel rooms, great weather too.

I think the proper response to that is "we're working on it." We're looking into the fact that RIT will have a nice new field house completed sometime in 2004 so it might just be possible to host a Rochester regional in 2005.

What's wrong with the Blue Cross Arena?

rees2001 24-04-2003 17:44

Do we have anybody in Rochester still working on getting us a regional? I know we were talking about it a couple of years ago. I agree that Blue Cross Arena would be a cool place to have a regional... maybe we coul work out a deal with Jillians to have the wrap party there... pipe dream.
Also are any of us actively recruiting new teams? I tried to get Pittsford on board last year but they were not interrested. I would be more than happy to continue to help once we secure a sponsor for ourselves for next year. We should get the Rochester coalition back in action to work on this regional thing.

Well, there are certain advantages to RIT. Namely, that it should be free (I'm not sure if there'd be any cost involved with Blue Cross Arena or not). There's also the ability to have non-rediculously overpriced food. That and the fact that those of us working on it here go to RIT and we could get (and are) a lot of support for it.

I know we're working on it at RIT but it's not a particularly official item yet. We've talked about it a bit and are trying to push it up the chain of command.

I guess the question is, what's wrong with RIT's Field House?

Matt

Well how about an off-season competition there instead?

rees2001 24-04-2003 18:59

I'll definately help out that. I have been thinking that an off-season comp would be the first step toward a new regional. Is that how it is generally done? Do most new regionls have an off-season comp first?

Matt Leese 24-04-2003 20:06

Some regionals have involvement with post-season competitions but I know that not all of them do. It's usually more that people who are likely to help organize a post-season competition are also more likely to be involved with starting a regional. We'll keep you apprised if we get anywhere with this.

I know that Kodak is running a post-season competition in September of this year. I'm not sure if you were implying holding it at RIT or not but Kodak has plans to hold it at their facility.

with the growing number of teams from the dakotas kansas, and now even Montana, I would like to see a MORE central regional. St.Louis is too south, Michigan is too North and Chicago is too East. Maybe in kansas or somewhere near the Western Iowa border.

Carlo 26-04-2003 23:25

Some guy today told me...

I was at a gathering today at the Hotel duPont in Wilmington Delaware, and there was some guy there riding some scooter device who said he wants a regional in Delaware, sponsored by some big chemical company.

Im tryin to remember, the guy was riding a scooter he called the segway and I think his name was Dean...Dean Kamen. And that big chemical company, well they sponsor 9 teams in the US and they are called, well jeeze they share the name with the hotel I was at, Dupont of course.

SO I want a regional at the University of Delaware. The Bob Carpenter center to be exact. Hosted by the Miracle Workerz.

That's a lot of work, if any area teams have anything to say about it, e-mail me, lets see if teams are interested.

Gabriel 27-04-2003 11:07

I guess I should be REALLY grateful for having UTC-NE in Hartford...

Of course if FIRST were to eliminate UTC New England and FORCE us to travel to a new regional (and maybe offer $20,000 to subsidize the trip :) )I would absolutely love to go to -

Brazil!
England
San Diego

I think holding Nat's in NYC is a great idea. How about Yankee Stadium?

Jeremiah Johnson 28-04-2003 21:48

How about one at the Mark of the Quad Cities. It is large enough. There should be enough hotels. I could Walk to the competition. There are a lot of places to go and see. It is fairly large but not toooooo large to get lost in. The people are friendly. Our hockey team is playing there as I post in the UHL Championship games. The food is great. The location is dead center of the country. I don't know what else to list. It is just a perfect place. I say, drop the StL Regional and bring it up here!

Ps: It's on the bend of the Mississippi!
