Hey. Is anyone else having issues downloading the frc game manual? I can view it in my browser on my iPhone and Windows computer but it won't allow me to download it as an encrypted pdf to my computer or phone. Is there a reason behind this? Or am I just missing something? Thanks

I wish they would just post an encrypted zip file. Everyone is going to re-download the actual files after kickoff because no one has the patience to type the password every time they open a file. In the future, could FIRST please just provide an encrypted zip so we only need to type the password once?

My iPhone won't let me do anything with encrypted PDF files. I guess they expect you'd decrypt it first. Safari will show me that it's there, download it, and ask for a password but I can't do anything else like email it if I leave it encrypted.

As a comparison, I looked at the Admin Manual and my phone gave me a lot more options for things to do with it. Email it, send it to iBooks, send it to Dropbox etc.

To save an un-encrypted copy once the file is open file:options. On the security tab, change the security method to no security. Then save the file.

I think it's because so many people are trying to download rn. Mine worked but really slow.... It's a 16 MB file and it took like 5 min... (Win 10, Chrome)

Jsteel 07-01-2016 16:09

Neither of the FIRST apps for iPhone appear to have the latest manuals available yet.

Most people don't need all 100+ pages of field drawings, which would take up the vast majority of an all-encompassing zip file.

Re: 2016 Game Manual Online

I've noticed that this years files are much larger in file size than last years encrypted files. This year's game manual is 15.5MB, compared to last year's 3MB. This year's Field drawing files total 128 MB, compared to last year's 46MB. I wonder if its just attributed to higher resolution images, or if there is much more detail in the manual this year.

I also wish they encrypted the game animation and field tour videos. It would make it a lot easier to watch them a second time locally rather than fighting the schools web filter to access them on YouTube.

FIRST could put the unencrypted game manual in an encrypted zip file. With the password, you could then decrypt the zip file and extract the unencrypted game manual.

The field drawings could be put in a separate encrypted zip file.

The point is: don't encrypt the file itself. Encrypt the container of the file so you don't have to download the unencrypted file later.

My prediction is that the extra file size is due to the rack/wall/goal we will need to build in the center of the field. Two days we'll know!!!

Haha. I went to an online decoder and tested to see how long it would take to brute force "R3C3CLERU$H2015" and it said it would take over 20 years to decrypt that password. Good luck ;)

I heard using a capital in the middle of you password makes it more secure.

R3C3CL3RU$H2015
3Zones2Goals1Alliance!
sAucersFlyRobotsClimb!
!HotShots!KnowBalance!
5Time4For3Robots2To1Dance!

Should be able to reduce the character set:

Anywhere from 15 to 10 characters (Trending down last year 15)
Last year only Upper Case , Numbers and Special

Pretty sure if someone has a supercomputer by reducing the range of characters and character sets we could get this cracked by launch.

Str0ngH0ld2016 my guess..ugh no.

There are always those few that are able to crack the code before the game. Now my question is... Is it even worth trying? Lol. My point it, don't try to break the password. It's not going to work unless you are super lucky.

If you are trying to move the file to your tablet or phone from the browser, here is a method on how to upload the file. I downloaded the file to my laptop, then dropped it into an email (gmail in my case), and emailed it to myself. Since I have the same email address delivered to my iPhone and iPad, the file was emailed to those devices. From there, I had the option to transfer it to iBook or any PDF reader from the email. Word of caution, some email applications have a 5 MB file limitition - gmail does not. Other option would be to move to Dropbox, and open from there.

Have a great kick-off and a great season!

The evidence that the game is ReRecycle Rush is growing : the mysterious 2 in x 2 in x 48 inch container in addition to the tote colors.

I know the game is Stronghold, but I am just commenting on observations.

Looking at the kits, there's one tote for veteran teams, and a second tote for rookies. I'm going to guess that the rookie totes will be recycled gold totes from 2015. That would both make kickoff easier, and move those otherwise useless gold totes out of inventory. Win-Win.

I put the encrypted manual file onto a 5-1/4" floppy disk, so I'll have it with me when I go to the kickoff event and pick up the kit.

Or was that a thumb drive?

I put it on a Google Drive that I can access from my iPhone. Then tomorrow when they release the password I should be able to open it.

However, as a backup I will also have it on other devices such as my laptop.

This requires PDFTK to work, but give it the password as the first argument (in single quotes, remember how FIRST used '$' in last year's password!) then list all your encrypted PDF files. [Fixed link to pdftk console tool -JL]

Code:

#!/bin/bash

password=$1
shift

if [ ! -d decrypted ] ; then
  mkdir decrypted
fi

for afile in $*
do
  if [ -e decrypted/$afile ] ; then
    echo "decrypted/$afile already exists, skipping"
  else
echo "Decrypting $afile with password '$password'"
    echo pdftk "$afile" input_pw \'$password\' output "decrypted/$afile"
    eval pdftk "$afile" input_pw \'$password\' output "decrypted/$afile"
  fi
done

Remember, you cannot test the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway if you don't put the data on tape in the first place.

I don't think my keyboard is older than the kids on the team; I switched from DIN to PS/2 connectors a few computers back, though I still have some DIN keyboards in a file cabinet. (I do not have any single density 5.25" floppies still in the shrink wrap, though I may have a few used ones that went to that Apple ][+ clone that had 35 rather than 40 cylinders.) After learning to type in the late '70's (I suspected that these computer machines might become more common), flat panels, even with motors that go "thunk" are not a suitable substitute for springs and mechanical switches.

A couple years ago, I got rid of about half of my old computers, I have fewer than 50 now. The oldest was a The Digital Group Z80 machine.

It's an early 1990s PS/2 Model M Space Saver keyboard. I bought a couple when you could still find them new on ebay for $5. Should have bought them all...
