Use FTC control system to test FRC drivetrain?
Please pardon my ignorance if this question is stupid:
Could one use the FTC control system (android phones, Modern Robotics motor controllers) to test out an FRC drivetrain? I was just toying with the idea in my head, and wasn't sure if it was possible. So this is a thought exercise. I don't trust the new FTC control system enough, yet, to use it on a larger robot that can turn into a runaway. Plus, those USB connections. But, anyway: It seems like you would just plug in the CIM motors to the MR controller, and it should work, right? They are both 12V. Or maybe not: Stall Current on the NeverRest 40's (FTC motors) is 11.5 Amps while it's 133 Amps on the CIM motor. MR Controller (http://www.modernroboticsinc.com/cor...r-controller-3) says max 5 Amps per motor. CIM says it's 2.7 Amp "Free Current". I am not sure how to interpret this. Does that mean you'd be okay unless you stall a motor? Bottom line: what are the odds of frying an MR controller if you hook it up to a CIM-driven drivetrain? |

You can connect an FTC battery with PowerPoles directly to a motor with PowerPoles if you need to test a motor quickly, but I suspect you will not have a good day if you try to run a whole FRC robot off of the FTC control system (for the reasons you already suspect).
