How many comp's did u attend? / The condition of last year's bot?

well since this is a two sided question...the first is the poll part of it...

how many FIRST sponsored competitions did ur team attend and how many post-season competitions / preseason competitions does ur team plan to attend with the old robot...

this leads into the second part...if u have attended multiple competitions what is the current condition of ur robot...how is the drive trains motors...how is the exterior of the robot? etc. etc...the robot cant be in the same condition as when u shipped it for ur first competition...or it could be...is it as strong as when u shipped it?....as fast?...

Ashley Weed 31-07-2002 09:09

We went to J&J Mid Atlantic Regional (5 qualifying points in one weekend! YEAH!:p We then went to Nationals!

We attended the PARC (every year!). We are now preparing for the NASA/MD State Fair Competition. We are planning on attending another competition this fall, probably the DuPont/MOE competition in October, eventhough our drivers can't go.

We held up ok through the FIRST competitions, obviously to do that well you have to keep running. At PARC we had a minor problem, but just something that needed to be checked that was over looked. Right now we need to work on the one drill motor before NASA.

Ian W. 31-07-2002 13:22

well, you missed one option on the poll. what about 3 FIRST, no off-season? since 810 was a rookie team, we had no idea about any off-season stuff, and by the time we figured it out, it was too late to plan it all.

conditions of the robot, hmm. well, the motors are still running perfectly, chain is a bit looser, but still stays on (oh yes, i have a thing against chains from this year), the tires are all destroyed, but that's our fault (screws in the tire DO NOT prolong tire life), the treads are faded, a bit thinner, but overall intact, the extrusion was loose (we fixed it!) and the paint all scratched, and carpet fuzz all over everything (our bot was a lint magnet). actually, if you want to see some bad pics of how our robot looks, go here...

Ian's Robot Pics

that should work, i cna't check it from here because the stupid proxy server blocks it (i have no idea why). shows the condition of parts of the robot before and after cleaning. in general, the robot is ever bit as robust as it was, and it still does what i want it to do. it is a very well design (thanks michael! :D) and it lasted, and it will last, a very long time, or at least that's my plan. i want to hang it in the science research room at my school :p.

sanddrag 31-07-2002 13:23

1 FIRST, 2 off season
still as fast, still as strong, still as good lookin'.
Only one small battlescar from CVHS 589.
We had massive drill clutch problems before any competitions but they were all worked out.
Our pre-comp. event we stripped gears and had to remove our chiaphuas and make it wth only drills.
Drill couplers unscrewed twice over the season but that is it. No other problems whatsoever. Very rugged beast.
We also pulled a ford ranger ext cab and the drive train didn't cry a bit which is remarkable having only 2 drill motors driving.

Aaron Lussier 31-07-2002 14:53

2 FIRST/ 3+ off season

UTC regional
Nationals

Rally in the vally
Mayhem on the merrimack
Battle Cry III
River rage( Has'nt happend yet but we are going)

Our drive system is just as strong as ever
Our goal grabbing flaps are torn to hell there bent and all scratched up

We are still really strong maybe stronger than when we shipped cause we forgot to like sync up the speed controlers and then we did something to the motors to make them run better or soemthing I'm not really sure cause the kid who did it is not good at explaining things.

Travis Hoffman 31-07-2002 16:58

You overlooked one category...

...the little-known "4 FIRST" and its variations. A small number of teams attended four FIRST events this past season.

Team 48 went to the Buckeye and Canadian Regionals, as well as the Championship Event. No offseason events for us...yet (wish we could have attended the IRI!).

Xtremachen5 is still alive and kicking and could quickly return to competition-ready status with a little TLC.

ColleenShaver 31-07-2002 17:22

we attended 2 regionals and nationals (was supposed to be 3 regionals) and we've attended Rally in the Valley, Mayhem on the Merrimack, and Battlecry so far.. with plans to head to Maryland State Fair, Riverrage, and Bash at the Beach still ahead.

Anyone at Mayhem and Battlecry knows that our robot has taken a beating and has a lot of spares on it (new wings, entire new front frame, new cables, etc). We haven't replaced any motors and all is still looking well in that department

But this year's robot has NOTHING on last year;s.... we're right about 70 appearances with Gompei2k1, including 8 competitions (7 FIRST/off-season last year, battlecry placebo this year). All the rubber is worn off the wheels, but that baby is still cruising. I don't think we've replaced a motor yet, and we've done very little body repair. And these are all 1hour+ demo's with at least 10 elementary/middle school kids driving it! They definitely don't go easy on it!...

And oh yeah, it's got at least another 20 hours of practice that have been done on it with our drivers...

It's much more interesting to demo with than 2k2 though, so we'll continue on using it... Gompei2k1 will never die :P

Dan 550 01-08-2002 01:31

We attended the J&J Mid-Atlantic regional and plan to attend the Brunswick Eruption (for more info, go here ) in November. The Box is still in fine working condition, though all the aluminum body panels are fully scarred from battle (heh) it still runs and doesn't drag anything. It could use new panels cut and printed, but other than that she's strong as ever, still pushing everything in any direction *007, we need another rematch, best of three* and doin what the Box does best -- striking terror in the circuts of other bots.

evulish 01-08-2002 08:07

Chuck's looking a bit worn but still running okay. Our tires are getting a bit smaller and the drill motor got messed up. The body of the bot looks like it has been in a war. Most of our sponsor stickers are being peeled or scraped off. One nice thing: we still have a bit of lime green paint left :D (note: we didn't paint our robot...who else uses lime green paint?)

Sorry, I'll stop:p

Silver Scorpion lives.

We did the NJ Regional (2nd place), the Nationals (Archimedes div champs) and the PARC (1st place). I think we had a pretty good year.

We will be attending Duel on the Delaware in October (time for the great moestick showdown) and we are hosting the Brunswick Eruption off season competition on November 23rd- you all should come. (Check the off season comp. threads) It will be a good warm up for the 2003 season- the year of the ODD number teams!!!

The Silver Scorpion is still in great shape. We totally flatteded one of our fenders and had to replace it. Other than that it has a few dents and dings but the guys from BMS refuse to let us take them out. They say it makes the bot' look tough. We have had NO mechanical problems and very few human related ones (like not hooking up the battery cables right!).

WC

Ricky Q. 01-08-2002 11:20

We did the MMR and Nats, and then hit the IRI.

Theo is doing okay, the front support bars on it were replace once at MMR and once at Nationals. The drivetrain is suffering a bit, we had to tear apart gearboxes once at each competition and replace bearings. We broke 2 welds, and cracked a support frame piece, all happening in Evanston and being fixed in Orlando. Everything else is doing well, and in the shrine he sits. :D

Andy A. 01-08-2002 11:28

2 FIRST, 2 off seasons thus far.

Overall, our 'bot is in pretty good shape. Drive system was bullet proof this year. The roller assembly needs a new FP motor, which we plan to drop in next week. We'll also probably replace our goal grabbers piston (it's been bent and set straight in a vice 5 times... the seals probably arn't in the best shape). The grasshopper on the side panels is looking pretty beat up, but it's all cosmetic. He's in need of a good overhaul, lots of small things are adding up, but nothing to difficult to fix.

Katie Reynolds 01-08-2002 12:09

This year we attended a scrimmage in Sussex Wisconsin, MMR, Nationals and IRI. TOBOR V ran pretty much the same throughout all 4 competitions. We broke a piece of out shielding at MMR, bent a drive shaft at Nationals and came out of all the competitions with a few 'battle scars' (the biggest being from 269 at IRI!!!) ;) We had to do some matinence on the wheels at MMR (too much traction so we had to replace two fo our wheels) and at IRI (too little traction from the wheels being worn down at MMR and Nationals!) Other than that, TOBOR V has been in great condition the whole season, and currently runs like a charm! :D

We have attended 3 FIRST competitions (Long Island, UTC, and Nats) and 1 post-season competition (Battlecry 3) thus far.

During the actual FIRST season the robot was very kind to us. The only real damage to the bot revealed itself during the national eliminations (bent ball grabber due to constant abuse) and was conveniently "repaired" by team 181, the birds of prey. There were some minor upgrades to the bot (tape measure tether :p, etc) to make it function more efficiently/effectively.

Currently the robot is in decent condition. The motors function properly (that drive train is still kicking), the ball grabber still works, goal grabber still works, etc; however, the robot isn't looking as good as it did when it was shipped. The paint job is ruined, some of the decals are scratched up, and the base is slowly shaving away. The cosmetic damage is to be expected and is not a big deal.

The NYC Regionals @ Columbia Univ.

The FL Nationals @ WDW

Thank You to Teams 348, 41 - NYC Alliance and Teams 84, 175 - FL Alliance for choosing us Team 522 as your partner in trying to go for the gold!

There was also the PA Robot Challenge Thank You Teams 61 and don't hate me for this but i really don't remember our other alliance partner off hand but who ever you are thanks!

This years robot had a couple of failures but it mainly cicrulated around the drive train. Poor design was the cause and we will build a better robot next year. as for last years "WILMA" is still alive and kicking and continues to maintain a 0 mechanical failure record in 2 years; year 1 competition year 2 ambassadorial services. "DOROTHY" is this years and has had at least 2 drill / tranny problems. one at the regionals where we had sheered a roll pin then later that day blew tranny and motor luckily it was on a practice day and us students Matt C. and Joe C. stayed a little bit later with Team 694 Stuypulse and repaired the damage before competition day. same problem occured in the nationals.... but we didnt sheer a roll pin we just got hit from the wrong direction and something in the tranny snapped. at the PA Robot challenge we sheered a roll pin.

WILMA - Now rests temporarily at the Queens museum of science - 0 mechanical failures
Dorothy - sits in our robotics room with that sheered roll pin from May - at least 3 mechaincal failures. we know now not to build a drive train that similar to this years drive train. To many chains, gears, ratios and problems. difficult to maintain when you got only 5 minutes between matches. hehe maybe we can get a nice break during comp day to repair our robot. maybe like an extra 15 minutes for lunch. eat then repair.

mike

WILMA will always live on. She just keeps goin and goin and goin and goin. etc....

You're forgeting the scrimmage at the beginning of the season, at suffied i think it was.

1 FIRST/ 2 offseason

Our robot is pretty scratched and bent from our offseason competitions. On our drive train, we ended up breaking the shaft that comes out of the atwood motor in our last match at the IRI. There is a chuck of tire gone from when we almost got flipped over in one of matches at the IRI. It's still fast and works okay. :D

I thought the biggest battle scar was the Beatty-Hammond match at MMR. We put a nice bend in the 30x30 bosch at MMR... running full speed in all of the 12+ FPS glory toward the goal...

It actually prevented our caster/brake mechanism from sitting straight. We fixed it by rotating it around so the bend was facing outward.

It was IL match 64 if you wanna look it up on Soap108.

It was us Team 41 the all mighty Robo-Warriors (who might I add had realized that a certain PWM had fallen out trapping us between hi and low gear would have made it back into the endzone to defeat the alliance at PA) STUPID STUPID cable

and to reply to the actual post

NYC Regionals (2nd Place) WOOHOO

Nationals (Best Cart Ever) So much freetime

PA Robot Chanllenge (ARGHH STUPID CABLE)

and hopefully the MOE sponsored thing and the Brunswick Eruption

oohh
P.S. at the PA thing we kinda borrowed your (522's) big box of cable ties and neglected to give it back before you left ooops sorry

when we started ouur off season comps, we looked half-way decent. after mayhem it wasnt too-too bad, even though we tore one of our lexan wheel guards off. but after battle cry, wow! even though we spent a day "cleaning" it up, it got mangled at battlecry. but our bot takes a lickin & keeps on tickin. plus our awsome mag wheels kicked so much butt and they worked amazingly! now we have ply-wood wheels that are ok, they look bad but do the job. so anyone who is going tho riverrage, look out cause here we come!! good luck everyone!:)

Rob Ribaudo 04-08-2002 12:14

One thing that Ian left out about team 810's robot is that during the New York City Regional is that we broke off a piece of the lexan on our robot. You can see here.

dets002 04-08-2002 13:01

Well, thanks to the quality of our pit crew and their preventitive maintainance, our robot had no major problems, except for one time when we over tightened a screw, messing up our goal grabber. But when we brought the robot home, we took it outside for an outdoor pep rally (we didn't know it was outdoors until we realized the gym was empty) and snapped a drive pin. Otherwise, it is in good shape.

mtaman02 04-08-2002 14:51

Sorry Watchung H.S. I forgot! Please don't hurt me.

Anyways, yeah stupid PWM Cables. FIRST has go to find a better way for the cable to be connected to the devices. They come out of the speed controllers and Spikes to easily let along the robot controller.

Really, you still have the twist ties. Was wondering what happened to them, hehe now i know. Doesn't really matter b/c we have plenty of them. You can never have two many twist ties.

And a question for 810 Mr. Mechanical Bulls. ummm. when you broke a piece of lexan i think team 522 had a hand in its breaking. I know in one match we were against one another in a match and we umm. kinda hit you on the side leaving a hole. we did not intentionally want to hit you put we saw what your stratedgy was and decided to go defense. don't remember if we actually won or loss that match either way my team did break a piece of lexan from your robot and i apologize for it. Our robot who did the damage "Dorothy" also apologizes.

Jeff Waegelin 04-08-2002 21:22

We went to Buckeye, MMR, Nats, and IRI.

For the most part, our robot is still in excellent condition. The only real damage we sustained was to our polycarb paneling and the treads on our wheels. The polycarb paneling is pretty dented and scratched, but still functional. We did go through about 7 sets of wheel treads, however. Other than that, our robot is fully functional.

J+J Regional
UTC Regional
Nationals

Rally in the vally
Mayhem on the Merrimack
Battle Cry
River Rage (Sept.)

Condition of this years ROBOT
ALL SYSTEMS ARE RUNNING GREAT and we are ready for River Rage. But we do have a BIG hole in our team made by our grads to be filled, good luck to ALL in the class of 2002.

Condition of last years ROBOT (it works) !!!!!!!

SEE YOU AT RIVER RAGE

D.Stephenson 09-08-2002 06:40

we went to the Long Island regional and to BattleCry3

Gui Cavalcanti 09-08-2002 10:41

IT's working condition... uhhhh....

IT has a really weird way of aging. Everything works perfectly, without degrading, but then something suddenly goes wrong without warning. There isn't much we can do to our robot for preventitive maintenance for this kind of thing...

For instance, at a Science Museum demo we went to, one of the keys popped out of the keyway between our drive sprocket and the cut shaft. We need to fix that but haven't gotten around to it.

Overall I think IT's gotten a bit slower and weaker, but I'm not sure. The body panels look like they've been through a sandblaster because they end up on the floor every single match, and many people (including us) tend to drive over them. Our wheels are holding up fairly well (especially the aluminum ones, lol). The back, screw-studded wheels should probably die at Maryland, but we have replacement assemblies so it's all good.

We look forward to the Maryland State Fair and the DuPont/MOE/Lunatecs event in October.

Amazingly enough, Peacemaker from 2001 is doing well. We didn't think this would be the case, because he used to have incredible tread problems (slipped off every 5 minutes after nationals), but he's better and hasn't slipped off since we added a tightener. We retrofitted a compressor to him, so now his claws can open and close with impunity.

We plan on using IT as a demo to next year's students - "DONT BUILD THIS KIND OF ROBOT!"

why are you apologizing? it was broken before we even played you :p. you just beat us really bad (we had a total of 0 points :D). it was actually i who broke the lexan. the story follows...

we had just redone the drive train giving us a huge power and speed increase. i was the first of three drivers that were driving the practice match. i didn't realize the robot was going to go so fast so quickly. it went so fast, it wound up going into a goal, lexan first :). we didn't realize it was broken until after the match. i think those silly english kids stole a piece and christina took the other, although i'm not sure where they are now.

as the pic discription says, we did have an argument with team 19 about breaking lexan, and, well, we did win that one ;).

breaking off the lexan also proved to be vital to our robot's validity. if the lexan had not snapped off, we would have been at least .2 lbs overweight. i say that quite literally. we weighed in at 130.0 lbs. that piece of lexan weighed at least .2 lbs. so, in a complete accident, i managed to do something good. sorta like the movie signs, everything has a reason of happening...
