The Sally Door

The Sally Door might just be the one thing that ends my sanity! I've been racking my brain, Google, and YouTube to find a time efficient way to open the Sally Door without opening from the others side. How are ya'll tackling this defense, if even at all?

Yes, Sally Door.

The Ri3D 1.0 team has a device on their robot that can open the Sally Port. You can check it out in their reveal video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd1FaSNoDiM

thank you! my team has watched that video and it was a great way to get ideas flowing. We like the concept of the function, but we are also looking for a way so that we don't have to spend time working our way around the door before going through the defense. The problem is the fluid motion of it all.

Opening the Sally Door and being able to go under the low bar will be an interesting challenge. I think the most efficient way will be to design an alliance game flow that uses a partner to open it for you.

If breaking the defenses is one of our main functions do you think we'll still be valuable as an alliance partner if all we can do is open and hold the sally door open for others?

WARNING!!! The sally door and the drawbridge are made out of very flexible material(slightly stiffer than 1/32-1/16th polycarb), opening them the way Ri3D did will almost certainly not work. DO NOT make those barriers out of plywood because that is nothing like what it will be on the field.

Assuming you're still able to breach the other defenses, and assist in capturing the tower, it wouldn't be a bad strategy to approach.

If opening the sally port is tricky, hold it open for an alliance partner and then following them through would be ideal. You only have to manipulate it once to damage it.

It would definitely be a viable strategy, but you have to consider what your robot will do in matches when A.) the sally port isn't chosen as a defense, and B.) after the sally port defense has been damaged.

Your robot could also choose to defend your tower in either of these situations.

When you break a defense you have to get back to the neutral zone somehow. It only makes sense to break a defense on your own, get back to the neutral zone through the [insert gated defense] and allow a partner to go through. Then after they are on the gate, holding it down, you'd just have to fully get into the neutral zone and then follow them through.

A robot dedicated to doing nothing but breaching/smoothing the flow of an alliance should be incredibly valuable at a regional/district level. At Champs these robots should also be able to contribute in other ways.

Actually both the Sally Port door and Drawbridge gate are made of two pieces of .125" polycarb sandwiched together for a total thickness of .25 inches. As noted in several threads (info from the 2016 Field Component drawings).

Why do you think that opening them this way will not work? Are they too flexible and will just bend?

Not to be too picky but its a Sally Port and not a Sally Door... not to be confused with a Sally Ride, or a Sally Field or a Sally Hemings or even a :] Sally Jesse Raphael
