Soda, Pop, Soda-Pop or Tonic
 

Hi, This week @ FIRST PLACE, we have staff from all around the country here. And we have realized that we call "Soda" all different names. And we where wondering what it is actually called!

Please help us settle this dispute!

I sit down, I type in www.chiefdelphi.com. I glance to my right. I see a new series of topics from the last time I checked the site. I get excited. I read. I learn.

It's the same question asked in 6 different ways.

(I didn't vote, I call it Coke, no matter if it's Pepsi)

we refer to it as "a carbonated type beverage" but i think thats just a U Tulsa/31 thing, as we have a love for frozen carbonated beverage

For some reason it has to do with the temperature of the region. In warm regions (like Florida) it's called coke--no matter what it is. In temperate climates--soda, and in the cold, like here in Minnesota, it's pop. I have never heard tonic from somebody less than 90 years old.:cool:

I'm with Foto on this one. No matter what the brand (Coca-Cola, Pepsi-cola, RC cola, etc.) it's always called a "coke."

pop is so much better than soda, you can't even fight that

I used to live in California, and there, we all called it "soda." Then, I moved to Michigan, where it's called "pop." I thought it was the weirdest thing for a long time, and still called it soda, but I've lived in Michigan so long now that I call it pop most of the time. Occasionally, I still find myself reverting to "soda", but it doesn't happen often.

I can't be the only one noticing the declining quality of posts at chief delphi. Why, I don't think I'd even be surprised if I really saw a "do you like RED or BLUE better" thread anymore. Granted this is the off season, and this is the chit chat forum, but I just thought I'd say that I know of at least one person who has stopped reading the forums due to the (and I quote) "nonsense."

Just something to think about ... (i'm not singling out this thread or anyone who posted in it, i don't mean to offend anyone)

You gotta remember, too, it's the "off-season." There just isn't as much to talk about. A lot of the major topics have been beaten into the ground over the past few months, and so, we are left with threads about soda vs pop, Pepsi Blue, and caffeine. Plus, it's the Chit-Chat section. It's been like this (somewhat).

It's definatley called soda, hence the title of the thread.

i'm from the north. hell, i'm from the middle of nowhere north (Woodstock, NY). now i'm on LI (moved when i was about 7 or so). i've called soda soda since i started drinking it. so, it's not the silly northerners, it the silly mid-west people. :D

It's pop, pronounced "pawp," y'know?

I used to call it soda, but I'm starting to call it pop...

:D Check out the big Purple Dot in NorthCentral Pennsylvania - that would be Sullivan County. It would produce no data due to having a seasonal population and well, just not really even having any stores or restaurants to sell soda or pop. I just thouht that was a bit interesting/commical. :D

I was thinking about this, and I realized that I say both "soda" and "pop" depending on who I'm talking to. My family generally calls it "soda" because that's what my mom and dad (from Missouri and Idaho, respectively) say, and we lived in California for a while when I was younger (and it's soda, there). With my friends, however, I generally say "pop", because that's what they call it. One thing is for sure, though... vending machines are always "pop machines", never "soda machines" to me.

No, no, no ... they're soda machines. ;)

I spent the first 7 years of my life living in Michigan and I've always said "soda" I must have picked that up from my dad - he spent the first half of his life in New Jersey (of course, when he's talking about soda it usually comes out "soder") ;)

You're all wrong!! It's a Coke Machine!! No matter what's in it, water, coke, juice, etc. It's always just a coke machine.

It is a Coke machine. But anyway, when we invited Team 22 over, they had no idea what we meant when we said 'pop'... or 'washroom' for that matter. Apparently it's a Canadian-American thing. Of course, we're right.

It's a vending machine ... that way you say "can you go to the vending machine and get me a POP." and if your hungry you add on "a bag of chips"

if you say "get me a Coke" the person will always get you a Coke .. but with pop you have a choice ...

The correct answer is pop and vending machines ..... but what about all the people who say "soft drink" like restaurant menus ...

It's gotta be soda. I've lived in the Northeast, the Deep South, and California, and all I've ever heard anyone really use is Soda.
