Need help! FRC2826 Wave Robotics 2016 Mecanum Drive!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmvuXQUobQM

Hello everyone we need your help!

We are an 8th year team and are really trying to improve from our last years performance. We really think our drive has a good shot of overcoming the obstacles.

We thought that 20" wheels would work well for us.

Please let us know if you think this is legal and a good idea.

Re: Need help! FRC2826 Wave Robotics 2016 Mecanum Drive!

I think the wheel pods are an excellent idea and mechanum is perfect for this game.

This reminds me very much of the scorpion tank from Halo, which is a perfect vehicle for traversing rough terrain.

See you on Einstein!

Nah. I think you need even bigger wheels. I think I might have read a rule you need 2 foot wheels. And some swerve mecanums would help too.

You might want to check the control system rules otherwise looks legal to me.

Tyler, your progress with mecanum (mechenim?) is astounding with regards to your resources. However, maybe you want to consider making a simpler robot that can be reliably operated if you want to break through and make it to Einstein some day.

One thing I would caution you on is that it appears you are using the gaming router from 2009 in your robot. While it was no doubt part of an undeniably successful control system rollout over 7 years ago, we since have undergone multiple changes to the radios. The newer Wi-Fi radios now connect in under a minute (a vast improvement from the 2008 and earlier radios that gave almost instant connections, depriving us of any drama from field reset). Also you should paint your PDB black.

You need to make the rubber on the rollers thinner and then mount them on spinner-wheel hubs.

That bump you demonstrated is only one obstacle, and it struggled with that. Don't forget that there is a 4.5 inch bump, too. Also, the obstacle with the bumps that are different heights is 100% going to cause you to get stuck. Lets also not forget about the low bar, I think that is self explanatory. Lastly, every obstacle is metal, not wood, so you are going to crack a roller if you hit it to hard.

How are you going to be able to shoot or defend? You're not. If i'm defending and I see mecanim, I thank God. That makes my job 10,000 times easier becuase one tap and you're rolling.

Last year was the year of mecanim, this year's game has no application for it. Go with pneumatic wheels or kitbot wheels, you will have way more success.

Also I'm sorry, but the last time I checked FRC is a program for high schoolers, just saying:]

Thank you for your input. We have some disagreements when it comes to the true power of mecanum... but otherwise I have to say you make some very valid points. We have tried to get more student engagement but all they want to do is look at pictures of cats with something about 'haz chezbrgr"...

tindleroot 23-01-2016 18:44

Re: Need help! FRC2826 Wave Robotics 2016 Mecanum Drive!

The choice of mecanum isn't a big deal compared to scouting. You need to find a high ranked team and beg them to pick you, that way you can be on the best alliance. Although, now that I think about it, they are probably more likely to pick you if they see your great mecanum drivetrain, so that's probably a good idea.

So after a long strategic review I have come to this conclusion.
Why not make this a mecHanum drive?
If you used those wheels and in the center perpendicular to the wheels added a 20 inch powered drop omni wheel and a gyro you could easily have an unpushable drive base. If anyone pushed your sides you could push back with the omni wheel which should EASILY have enough force to handle itself in this years game.

I have to say, though, that a robot that could just drive over the Cheval de Frise without even caring would be pretty impressive.

Also, clearly the reason his "student" actors are so well versed in the robot is because the mentors spend at least 6 weeks coaching them on the ins and outs of the robot.

I got a tip that the "actor theory" is just a cover up for the real reason their "students" know how the robot works. The mentors use polyjuice potion and they just find some random kids to transform into.

Totally seems legit. We're all just a bunch of hoodwinked muggles. Wave Robotics, eh? The only thing that team is waving is WANDS.

Magic totally explains how they could fit that robot inside a 120" frame perimeter. And how they posted video of this year's robot back in 2009. And they used time turners to finish the robot so quickly and... it all fits man. That has to be it.

This is such a great idea that we would like to collaborate with you. You build us another chassis like this one -- even better, build four so we can keep practicing after bag day. We will build bumpers and LED strings for you.

As for legality, both teams will need to fundraise like crazy so we can send all of the LRIs, FTAs, Head Refs, and other knowledgeable volunteers on expense paid trips to an exotic location devoid of connectivity, so we can pass inspection and avoid penalties.

WAVE does it again by thinking outside the box. Please pick us in Milwaukee so we can share the ride to victory again. Our team requests that you keep you web page and build log up to date. It's hard for us to design and borrow your ideas when you are not current on your build log. Sending all your CAD files via email would be greatly appreciated. No rush on the files. We have been inspired by the "build a robot in 3 days" videos. We plan on starting in three weeks. We have plans for the kids until then. We're headed to China in pursuit of 8" pneumatic tires. We plan on buying the rest of the world's supply of tires and holding the tires at a secret location till the first week of competition. Please do not ruin our plans by persuading everyone to use Mecanums.

Either you're playing along with the joke, or you don't recognize the 3-can auto grabber. Now, that could have been a lot better if they'd gone for a 7-can grab, but that's just me.

Only bad teams make things themselfs. Don't you know you can just buy robot kits?? Top power teams don't waste time, they just spend $$$!

Cots really stands for cheating organization together sucking.

All the top teams are driving their many-sided wheels directly from CIMs. All the power, all the speed, no drawbacks.
Also, I appreciate your forward thinking in that makenim rollers may be used as flotation devices.

Edit: Andy Baker called, looks like he has to do a complete redesign of his robot now that you've gone public with this.

Buy the kit but say you made it on the BOM. Much easier.

It might help if you put the robot on carpet as well, rather than tile. You might see different results in how it drives.

We feel that tile is a better simulation for the polycarbonate and that is more important than carpet. Is you disagree tell us so we may improve!

Hmm with the weight of those wheels you are going to nee to fool the scale somehow, I personally think you should install some Rotary Propellers to create lift for your robot. this would allow for your robot to not only come in under weight but also keep your weight and CoG in the middle of your robot at all times. I also think that you might want to look at the dimensions of your robot being 50x20 as it is over the perimeter limit on our robots.

If you were to install some 8 wheel pneumatic system with a gap in the center and dropping your chains down and then having a utility arm for dealing with obstacles and boulders I feel you woul find it more worth your time, also the layout for mechanum wheels should be like this for he rollers

\\\ ///

/// \\\

where the rollers all point towards the center of the robot. you may want to also make your connections water tight if you are planning on crossing the moat this year, I hear they are planning on filling it with dehydrated water for the competitions.

Was your chassis milled out of a solid billet of 7071?

Someone dotted me for my first comment calling me rude and not contributing to the discussion. I'm done....

Oh I also heard if you made mecanum rollers out of regolith it works better.

That sounds wicked cool. Any truth to the rumor if you did that and played on a regolith floor that it would actually hover?

Eh waiting for Mythbusters to try it first.
