Greater Kansas City Regional 2016

I was looking at the list of teams attending the Greater Kansas City Regional on the FIRST website and there are only 55 teams listed but everything we have received says there are 60 teams attending. Does anyone know who the extra 5 teams are?

We just got in Thursday. Looks like we are at 59 at the moment, but expect 1 more to cap at 60.

They were at the max until deposits were due. At that point teams on the wait list were accepted. You will not get a final list until all teams have paid.

Our team cleared the wait list and paid last week. Looks like we are one of two non-KS and MO teams. See you there.

Glad to see that you guys made it off the wait list! I was starting to wonder.

Re: Greater Kansas City Regional 2016

Kansas City has an amazing streak where one of the winners from the previous year always appears on the winning alliance the next year. That streak survived an inprobable continuation last year where only 1 winning team member returned to GKC for 2015 and had to square off against a juggernaut alliance in the finals which included perennial powerhouses 1730 and 1806. All I can say is congrats to 1723, and don't mess with the streak.

2007 Winners: 0935, 1775, 1997
2008 Winners: 0476, 1806, 1802
2009 Winners: 1806, 1208, 0931
2010 Winners: 2345, 0525, 0931
2011 Winners: 0525, 1730, 1984 (replaced by 3784)
2012 Winners: 1986, 0016, 3784
2013 Winners: 1986, 1806, 2389
2014 Winners: 0118, 1986, 1723
2015 Winners: 1785, 1723, 1710

1710 does not appear to be playing in GKC this year. Expect 1785 and 1723 to be hot commodities come alliance selection time.

1710 will be there, but not to compete! We will be representing the midwest along with 1986 and 1785 at the Smoky Mtn Regional in Knoxville. Can't wait to see what our KC community will do!

So we never had a shot last year in the finals. If we could have pulled off a 2014 win we wouldn't have been doomed by the GKC curse.

I went to the team social last year with one other member from my team. There's certainly people to talk to, music, etc. There's food. Not everyone is entirely social; some people got together outside and worked on their code. I bet if it's warm enough there'll be lots of Ultimate Frisbee.

Re: Greater Kansas City Regional 2016

Wanted to pass along an invitation that was e-mailed by our regional director 2 days ago.

We know that many teams do not have the resources to build all of the field elements themselves and we hope this day will help to level the playing field for all KC area teams.

Quote:

Coaches,

The R7 Alliance (1730, 1986, and 1987) is excited to announce our 5th annual scrimmage event on Saturday February 20th from 8 am - 3 pm! Location is Lee's Summit High School B gym. Entrance is on Browning St on the west side of campus.

We plan to have inspectors from the Kansas City Regional on hand for any teams that want to go through a mock inspection before the actual event.

We are asking that teams bring their own extension cord/power strip to charge their batteries and as many game pieces as possible so that we may be able to simulate matches on the field. Teams should also bring any tools you may need as there will not be a tool shop available. We have been asked to make sure that teams do not drive robots on the uncarpeted areas of the gym floor to avoid making marks.

Field Access: Matches will run every 15 minutes beginning at 8:30 am, with a total of 10 minutes of field access for teams. For the first two and a half minutes, a match timer will run for teams to practice autonomous and match timing. Teams can use the remainder of the 10 minutes of field time for any additional testing.

To ease field reset and to maximize field time, we plan to set up one of each defense from each category on the field. The red side will contain the Portcullis, Moat, Drawbridge, and Rock Wall. The blue side will contain Cheval de Frise, Ramparts, Sally Port, and Rough Terrain. You will have the opportunity to select alliance color when signing up for matches.

Concessions: New, this year we've expanded our concessions from the previous years. We will be serving a pancake breakfast and coffee, and hot dog and pulled pork meals for lunch along with the typical snacks that we've had. We will provide a menu with pricing to any teams attending.

This year's game is tough, but an added challenge has been building a practice field with all of the elements that can be used. It was a major monetary and labor intensive work effort - to help us offset this we hope that teams will support our efforts by purchasing from the expanded concession stand. We appreciate your support of these concessions to continue to fund the elements for use at the scrimmage and the KC regional practice field.

If you are planning to attend, please RSVP to Hillary Griffith (e-mail redacted).
Drop me a PM if you need Hillary's contact information.

I got my confirmation a few weeks ago for field reset and tear down at the end of the weekend along with some others from 1710. There were a few people who didn't hear back yet and a common thread among them was that they were under the age of 18. Everyone that was emailed confirmation was 18 or older. That may be intentional or a complete coincidence.

Weird. I'm 21 and previously volunteered at GKC in the same role that I applied for, so I have no idea. Know if the volunteer coordinator is still Janell Peterson?

I applied for Ref in Late January, when out team was able to register, and never heard back. A few weeks later, I added RI, and still did not hear back. A week or two later, I added Field Reset, and heard back within a few days.

Is anyone planning to record the matches and post them to YouTube? It is a bummer when you can't go back and watch matches after the Regional is over.

Kansas City only has a few matches from last year posted on TBA.

1108 will record and post all of the matches that we participate in, but my videos are probably only going to be the side of the field that our robot is on, following our 'bot.

Also, I was a volunteer last year at KC, but was able to make three or four match videos, posted on my youtube account (also called 'hrench') www.youtube.com/hrench

Maybe you've seen these or maybe you'll see something new you've missed before.

I am working on getting it set up so that we can film every KC match with a full-field view so we can have archives for TBA.

As this is our team's first effort at this, please be understanding if it doesn't go perfectly.

If your team has done this before and you have tips for us, please feel free to send them our way.

Can't wait to see all our friends from KC. Three more days!

Working on it, but no promises. It might be tough to get the screen in the shot with it being off to the side like that.

Fair enough. The set up at MCC is kinda wonky, but don't go too far out of your way for that. It's just nice to see the score while the game is going.

Well, a quick and dirty solution would be to use Open Broadcaster Software to record the matches and have a secondary camera aimed at the scoreboard which you can then crop to only show the score and then overlay it above the field feed.

Also, for those wondering about the low bar fabric and why we had bumper material rather than the new vinyl that was in the Team Update, it's because FIRST decided to only ship it to "most" regionals.

Indeed it was. I'll admit, I'm kinda sad to see it go, but congratulations to the #1 Alliance of 1986, 1775, and 4455. I'll make a better write up later, because I am simply beat.

Alpha Beta 14-03-2016 01:11

Re: Greater Kansas City Regional 2016

On behalf of Team Titanium, FRC 1986, I wanted to thank all of the volunteers and staff that helped to put on the Greater Kansas City regional. This crew found a way to squeeze in 10 matches for every team (59 of them!), even giving up lunch on Friday to make it happen. Thank you for going above and beyond what was normal to make this experience extraordinary.

The streak of a defending GKC winner always being on the next winning alliance has been broken (with a little tip of the cap to a team who won the very first GKC regional). Thank you Tigerbytes, FRC 1775, for joining us on this journey. You lived up to our scouts' expectations of 5 boulders per match while clearing multiple defenses in our efforts to breach. And thanks to FRC 4455, The Burger Bots, for playing dynamite defense. Between the two of you (except for QF#1) we always had at least 8 boulders in, and the other side never did!

Wanted to give a special shout out to FRC 1987, the Broncobots. This team scared our scouts, and earned our deepest respects. With a very consistent 20 point autonomous and the ability to pound the high goal from close and far range they had the complete package. No surprise to see them in the finals, and expecting great things from them at the Hub City Regional in week 5.

1 1986 1775 4455 (W)
2 5119 1939 1810 (QF)
3 1806 1987 0935 (F)
4 4959 1785 5730 (SF)
5 1730 3528 2346 (QF)
6 1825 4522 1108 (QF)
7 3172 1997 1769 (SF)
8 5098 2457 5801 (QF)

Top honors for EI and Chairmans went to The Kuhnigits, FRC 1939, and Liberty Robotics, FRC 1764. Both of these teams continue to help make the Kansas City area a hot bed for engineering excellence, and it will be a pleasure to join the two of you at Champs.

We've had a special relationship this year with FRC 5801, CTC Inspire. And couldn't be more thrilled to see you guys get the chance to attend the last single location world championship event for FIRST robotics. The rookie all star award was well deserved.

Last of all I wanted to express how proud I am to be a part of Team Titanium. Special congratulations to Jacob Schnitzlein honored as a Dean's List finalist. Students like you make all the late nights worth it. Thank you for balancing our relentless pursuit of excellence with a willingness to help every team that calls, writes, or stops by our pit for programming help. You inspire me.
Win/Loss Record = 16-0-0
OPR = 60.00 (3rd Highest in the World thus far)

PS. Thank you to the webcast team for allowing the rest of the world to peek in on our event. (My mom watched the whole thing.)

FRC 1987, the Broncobots, would also like to thank the organizers\volunteers of the Greater Kansas City Regional. The event was smooth like it normally is. The competition was great to watch.

FRC 1986, Team Titanium, won again with the help of FRC 1775, Tigerbytes and FRC 4455, The Burger Bots. A huge Congratulations goes out to this alliance.

It was most impressive that FRC 1986, Team Titanium found the perfect first alliance partner selection in FRC 1775, Tigerbytes. The ability for the alliance to put 8 or more balls into the tower made the alliance formidable at GKC.

It is great to see some different teams getting the attention they deserve on the Championship invitation awards. Congratulations to FRC 1939, The Kuhnigits and FRC 1764, Liberty Robotics. Both teams are top notch programs. We have heard some say they have a great chance at Championships. We know you will represent the Kansas City area well.

We would also like to thank our alliance partners FRC 1806, SWAT and FRC 935 RaileRobotics. Our students enjoyed working with both teams. The possibilities of winning were there if the robots were working like they did during qualifications.

While all of our students are family that we are extremely proud of, a special shout out goes to Connie Wentworth, Dean's List Finalist. That young woman is a shining example of why all of the mentors\coaches do what we do.

Congratulations to all the teams that won an award and competed at the GKC regional. In my opinion probably one of the toughest regionals in the Midwest.

Congrats to 1986, 1775, and 4455, for winning, and 1806, 1987, and 935 for taking 2nd place.

Good luck to all those who earned a ticket to champs.

Look at that cluster of teams under 2000! Maybe a related to the GKC Regional's 10th Anniversary? Kansas City is definitely producing some great STEM programs. Congratulations to those making the trip across the state. Up Next will be cheering for everyone. (Not gonna lie though- sad there is such a big gap between 1987 and 4455 without 3528 in there). ;)
