[FTC]: Android Studio / Java basics

We are new to Android Studio / Java and trying to muddle our way through using the sample codes for the K-9 and Pushbot, and the OpModes in the SDK.
Pre-season, we tried to find some AS tutorials and were not successful.
Is there a resource for the basics? Like runtime vs. sleep, while vs. if/then/else, etc.? I'm thinking we're missing a basic understanding in order to get a pair of light sensors to work.

Our teams have found the Intelitek resources as a great starting point.
