Robotics Shop Playlist

Hi!

I have been tasked with building a playlist to play in our robotics shop, and I wanted to look beyond the usual songs you hear at robotics events (i.e, "Mr. Roboto","I Knew You Were Trouble","We Will Rock You", "Robot Rock",etc.) to some crowd-pleasing songs people might not know or hear as much. A relevance to anything FIRST (robots, science, medieval, castle structures, etc.) is a plus, but not mandatory. What suggestions do people have?

For the robotics shop we like to play indie chill music because it's not too distracting with lyrics.

TimTheGreat, thanks for the advice! I'll make a separate playlist for when we're working, and stock it witch "chill indie". I will also need to make a playlist for cleaning up in the last 30 minutes of our sessions, however, and this one can be more involving. What should I put on the second one?

If not I've found that this is pretty good 'get to work' music.

Our team has our own Spotify account with a playlist that we use while working in our workshop, this playlist was made as a collaboration between the whole team and mixes everyone's interest in various kinds of music in one.

Warning this has explicit music but feel free to listen and share with others.

Personally I have a few playlists that have been collaborated between me and a friend, as well as other favored playlists while working.

Whoever connects their phone to the sound system first decides what we listen to. If someone dislikes it enough to actually change it, the first phone gets booted and the angry student plugs in their phone. Eventually, you reach a student whose tastes aren't terrible, and whose music is school-appropriate enough that mentors aren't unhappy.

Oh, a fun little story on this topic:

According to our lead mentor, a 1592 alum, their shop music consisted of one Flogging Molly CD that lived in the shop with a boombox. Perhaps we can find some inspiration in this.

The last thing I played when I had my phone plugged in is this playlist I made for when I'm busy working on something. Relaxing and atmospheric, but not enough to put students to sleep and not too much distraction from lyrics. It's nearly four hours of continuous music, so it's good for when you don't want to keep changing songs for the long haul.

Last year we listened to the Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Vol. 1 soundtrack almost every day for the start of the season since it got too distracting (and old) after a while. Since our main room is a classroom we just use the speaker system and it's pretty fun. We also started listening to Electro-Swing mixes which are pretty nice as they're upbeat and not nearly as distracting.

My personal choice for work background music is not exactly standard, since I listen to instrumental jazz and Gustav Holst typically on my own.

Our shop at the university used Pandora's "Classic Rock Power Workout" station, which I have found to have quite a few good tunes for events and just for runs and stuff.

This is a better clean up song. I'm not sure who found it but we play this at the end of every Saturday meeting (for FTC mostly).

My team spent way too long listening to these songs today during build. It's a nerdy twist on some common songs that I have not heard before at a competition. Enjoy!

Dean Simmons and the Kamen Brothers is always a relevant choice.

This message was simply intended as clarification, since I genuinely liked TimTheGreat's advice and wanted to get more from him. I apologize if it came across as rude; that was not the intent.

One night this week, the co-captains put the Clean-Up song (yes, the one from Barney that's stuck in your head now, you're welcome) on loop, and refused to stop it until everything was put away.

I definitely don't recommend it if you plan on keeping team members, but I have to say I've never seen our space get so clean, so quickly. :)

My engineering teacher at school usually played this. It's not so much about cleaning up as just general chores, but I thought it was hilarious. According to my teacher, this was a real, actual, popular song back in the day. Wikipedia confirms--it spent 7 weeks at #1 on "the R&B charts" and made #1 pop song once.

+1'd. Have you tried Paul Desmond radio on Pandora?

We have a mentor named Arnold. During meetings, we listen to what can only be described as "Arnold's music".

Most of us aren't sure what it is, or whether it technically qualifies as music, but when Arnold plays his music, you know it's Arnold's music when you hear it.

When Arnold leaves, or if we all get tired of whatever you call that sound coming from his iPod, we listen to Wes' music.

I like Wes' music.
