Any Anime Fans?

I was wondering if anyone was into japanese anime.

/me likes FLCL, Angel Sanctuary, and Evangelon

any other favourites of other people?

oh, has anyone ever seen Kogepan? its funny, its a burned loaf of bread that is depressed. Its great.

FotoPlasma 14-08-2002 21:29

I like some anime.

I have been known to watch Serial Experiments: Lain, Cowboy Bebop, and some Eva...

I don't particularly like it when people just off and offend anime, perhaps I should make it a point to say "[insert activity here] sucks" whenever someone brings up something I dont like... oh wait, I already do...

/me cries

Chris Nowak 14-08-2002 22:28

yeah

I'm a big anime fan
Eva's pretty cool, I also Like Hellsing, Love Hina, Bebop, and way too many more to list

DanLevin247 14-08-2002 22:36

I strongly disslike it. Too many bright colors.

Rob Ribaudo 14-08-2002 23:35

Anime, anime, anime, anime

Anime is the best! So far I have seen Evangelion (the best), Love Hina, Serial Expirement Lain, Comic Party, To Heart, FLCL (strangest anime ever), Trigun, Escaflowne, 1st season of Card Captor Sakura, and Princess Mononke. I have seen all of this in Japanese with subtitles. I am hoping to see even more anime by the time school starts. Anyone interested in talking to me about anime, contact me over AIM at my screen name puzz3dmaster. Oh, and on one more note, SUBTITLED ANIME IS BETTER THEN DUBBED ANIME. Sorry I just had to bring that out. (Thinks I will regret saying that.)

Aaron Lussier 15-08-2002 02:09

I started off watching what ever was on TV: DBZ, Tenchi, Gundam Wing. then I started going to stores and buying some of the stuff I had'nt seen. I got hooked on Bubblegum Crisis 2040 tokyo for a while then moved in to The slayers series, Martian Susscesor Nadescio, and Power Dolls II. Then Outlaw star strted up on TV I got hooked on that all the time keeping up with my fave DBZ. My friend dhowed me the movie Vampire hunter D that was good. then I rented the one about blood ninjas, it was really gory, but good cell animation. And when ever Princess Mononke cam on the movies channels I watched cause The voice talent is great and the cell animation is the best I've seen in years Oh yea I also love Gunsmith Cats<----- Very good. If I think of any more I let you know.

Mbusters01 15-08-2002 16:45

*pops a couple of pills to Rob*
Calm down Rob

Anime is cool. The very first time i saw anime was when i saw Robotech. Thats when i was sucked into the anime world.
I currently like Evangelion, FLCL, Cowboy Beebop, Trigun, Love Hina, Gundam (some series), Princess Mononoke, and Galaxy Express 999 (one of the best movies ever made IMO)

DanL 15-08-2002 17:02

Here's something satyrical for you anime fans I saw the other day on Somethingaweful.com: Guide: "Making Anime" :)

Disclaimer: It's not exactly X-rated, but it's not exactly G-Rated either. I trust you'll be mature enough to make the right choice about that link.

Rob Ribaudo 15-08-2002 18:18

That was something awful (Pun intended)

Dan, I don't like it when someone talks about anime wrong like that. That only seems to aplly to the anime they show in America and not the one I have watched in Japanese with subb titles. It is the same as saying a FIRST Robot is like a Battle Bot and I know you don't like it when someone says that. :)

[edit](Just for the sake of not having so many post next to each other in this thread.)
Anyone who wants to discuess anime, the meaning of it, the point of watching it with sub titles or dubbed, or anything else IM me over AIM at the screen name puzz3dmaster. I will try my best to answer any questions anyone would have.[/edit]

that is funny. I dont get what the big deal is with anime. What is the point of watching characters were there mouth movements dont even match the words that they are "saying"??? I mean come on it is just a little rediculous especially if there are subtitles and the spoken words are all in Japanese I personally wouldnt want to sit there trying to read all the subtitles while the show is going on and you probably cant even read the subtitles fast enough and still pay attention to the action before the next set come along so if ya ask me normal cartoons from AMERICA are much better than anime from Japan or anywhere else

Plus that something aweful guide is so true from the few anime shows that i have actually seen some of the program, the bodies are all the same in that they are nothing close to what would be physically humanly possible without having surgery or working out for years and even still it would be absolutely grotesque and i personally wouldnt want to get to know someone like that.

Chris Nowak 15-08-2002 22:35

Its a matter of opinion....

I know from experience that some people just don't like anime and there is absolutely no way to change their minds on the subject. Its not that they are all being close minded (although many are) its just that it doesn't appeal to them. For me, I have always been drawn towards anime and I love it, just cuz I do. Reading subtitles also bothers me less than other ppl.

Dubbing versus Subbing is a really stupid argument to get into...honestly....who cares about how anyone prefers to watch anime. I prefer subbing because I'm also a fan of Japanese and I feel a lot of feeling is lost when you dub(also, most of the stuff I get isnt available dbbd yet, so its moot for me). But please don't go off and say that everyone in the world should watch it the way you watch it, just because you like to watch it that way.

So has anyone here seen/heard of Hellsing? I just watched through it for the 3rd time and I think its awesome. Or has anyone seen Scryed? Scryed just plain rocks. Easily my favorite.

Rob Colatutto 16-08-2002 19:34

/me acts as kenshin

a new anime now that is big on irc is hack sign, its still running in japan now, and its pretty nice quality. about a virtual reality mmorpg

Chris Nowak 17-08-2002 00:41

Yeah, Hack Sign is pretty sweet. Only thing I don't like about it is the lack of any real fighting. The music rocks, I don't know if anyone has seen Noir but Hack Sign really reminded me of Noir's awesome music. I have up through ep 8, but alot more are "out" right now and I need to get up to speed. And "Nataku" is from X TV, isn't it? Not saying you are, but I found that show to be incredibly cheesy. The opening rocked, though. Just my opinion.

Rob Colatutto 17-08-2002 00:46

no, nataku is what wufei's gundam in gundam wing, i haven't seen that other show. but yes, hack sign does need a little more fighting, the show seems to pick up a little at episode 10

Adam Y. 17-08-2002 15:22

Bah anime is taking over saturday cartoons and it could be very good from the looks of it. Fox is going to be almost all anime except for some american cartoons plus the wb has anime coming out also.
I like:
yugioh
pokemon(sometimes i watch it)
digimon
medabots
Basically I like all cartoons:).

Chris Nowak 17-08-2002 18:37

A lot of people really hate the fact that pokemon and digimon are associated with Anime. IMO, its kind of in a category of its own, more like "Anime for kids". Plus, there is no way FOX will ever have anything like Kenshin or any of the more violent animes out there on Saturday morning. It is becoming more popular, though, but many times it seems they just show an anime for a few weeks. I know that happened with Escaflowne, they showed just about a thrid of the series then canceled it.

Mbusters01 17-08-2002 19:39

Actually, the company that gave Fox Escaflone really distorted the series and deleted several parts which they thought will not be suitable for children. This desicion resulted in the series seeming to jump from one place to another too soon and turned a lot of people away. And because there was almost nobody to watch that show, Fox cancelled it.
P.S.- I really dont see what the matter is with watching Pokemon or Digimon. After all, these anime might turn younger viewers to other kinds of anime and anime might finally have a nice market in the U.S. :p

Chris Nowak 17-08-2002 19:59

I'm not saying theres a problem with watching it, its just that considering they are popular shows with younger ppl many people come off with an impression of all anime being that way (designed for kids). I dunno, its not really that bad.

Ryan Dognaux 17-08-2002 23:52

Anime

I'm an anime nut! Notice my name contains the word "anime" wow, anyways, Cowboy Bebop, Blue Gender, Princess Mononoke, AKIRA, DBZ Gundam Outlaw Star everything Anime is cool, Sailor Moon was cool, Hamtaro... little out there, but still funky cool. If it's anime, it's good ;) cept for pokemon... whoever made that should be impaled upon a stick! yup IM me on AOL at Evilstanley to talk Anime or robotics or anything - Ryan

Rob Ribaudo 18-08-2002 10:07

I have recently took out two books about anime from two of my local librairies. For some reason they do not have many books on the subject. The first book give brief decriptions and information for over 2000 animes, and the other book explains Japanese culture in animes that may not be understod by Americans. Now I can find out what much in anime means and what animes I should watch. Anyone who has questions about anything in anime can ask me and I should now be able to answer :D.

Justin 188 18-08-2002 12:41

Gundam Wing's where it's at ;)

Joel Glidden 19-08-2002 13:47

Cowboy Bebop rocks big time (and English dubbed version > Original Japanese). Ghost in the Shell was cool. Akira got me started. Other than those I've never seen anime that was worth my time.

Blue Gender

1 Attachment(s)
If you haven't heard of it, Blue Gender is a really really good anime that FUNimation has released. Yes yes I know you're saying "Funimation?!?! They released sometime good?!" Yes! and the story is completely true, no edits, nothing, in other words, Pure Anime. Anyways, www.bluegender.com is the site and the picture I'm attaching should compell you to buy the first volume. Look at this guy's Sideburns!! (Yuji) But the series is kinda a downer, and not recommended for the squeemish, bug haters, or anti-sideburn people.

Chris Nowak 19-08-2002 19:46

Thanks for the info, that series looks pretty sweet. I might just go out and buy that right now.

Adam Y. 19-08-2002 19:59

Bah I only watch cartoons on fox and channel eleven. The only anime there are for kids.(except for yugioh it got warped into being a kids show) Besides what does anime mean anyway?

Ryan Dognaux 20-08-2002 17:18

Anime

Anime is a broad term, many people have many different definitons. Basically Anime(Short for Animation) is a cartoon that's usually made with a certain style of drawing, originally from Japan. However, Anime can(and usually is) translated and editted when brought to the U.S. I still call this anime.

And a reply to Chris Nowak, It is sweet! Hope you like the pic, I had to edit the weapon out of Marlene's hand... I mean.. she's clapping!!! Sideburns are cool!

Ryuu 24-08-2002 09:04

Anime is definitely great. For the most part I watch subbed, since dubbed is generally watered down in my opinion, and I have no troubles reading subtitles and watching the show at the same time. Then again, I don't watch TV at all, everything I watch, I buy, so watching english shows is getting foreign to me. I know, I'm odd. I just tend to dislike what is on TV, and so I don't watch it. I own two dubbed tapes, one is just frightening and I didn't make it past the first episode, the second is good, very cute.

Favorite anime... that in itself is a horrible question for me to answer, as that all I watch is anime. I really like Kodomo No Omocha, Serial Experiments: Lain, Ah! My Goddess!, Love Hina, Digi Charat, Boys Be, Mononoke Hime, Flame of Recca, Fushigi Yuugi, Rurouni Kenshin, Magic Knights Rayearth, Shadow Skill... basically any other anime I've seen, as you can probably tell from the large range of types of anime. I am also a large fan of manga, such as Ah! My Goddess!, Love Hina, Card Captor Sakura as well as others.

As for pokemon... the show is no good, but the different pokemon are cute! Therefore it's all good in my opinion. I mean, come on, I watch Digi Charat, I must like cute things...

Ryan Dognaux 24-08-2002 12:25

Manga

I'm glad VIZ is releasing Dragonball and Dragonball Z in the "Manga Graphic Novel" format, it really makes it last longer than their comic book run. :D AKIRA is good in it's manga form too, the story is different than the Movie's , but it contains the same characters. Does anyone read Ranma 1/2 ? I've been wanting to buy it.. but haven't yet..

Trashed20 25-08-2002 00:16

anyone ever seen abinobashi (sp?)

my friends favorite anime is Tokyo Mew Mew (yuk).

p.s. I hate initial d

MBiddy 25-08-2002 09:35

I don't get anime. At least not DBZ-like anime. It's cool when things are exploding, but most of the time people are just standing around twitching and thinking. Twitch twitch.

Rob Ribaudo 25-08-2002 10:10

To truely understand anime, you first have to watch the anime that is not shown in America. The anime that is shown in America are only shown because of their popularity to kids and that they can make compianies lots of money [cough]pokemon[/cough]. Their are alot of animes out there that are for teenagers and have much deeper story lines. Examples of these are Evangelion (action and alitte romance), Serial Experiment: Lain (action and alittle religion), Love Hina (a romantic-comedy), To Heart (a romantic-comedy), and Comic Party (a romantic-comedy). The story in all these animes are great and you can learn alot from them if you pay attention to it. There many, many others that I am sure others can come up with.
As always, if you want to know more or have any questions IM me with AIM at puzz3dmaster.

most people that watch japanese anime (either dubbed or subbed, i perfer subbed) hate DBZ, it has hundreds of episodes and it takes forever for anything to get done. Half the episode is a recap of the previous one. There is much better stuff out there, which is more mature/violent/sexual which kids don't/shouldn't watch. DBZ is good for 7 year olds i guess, since they scream for 5 minutes and then punch someone.

Chris Nowak 25-08-2002 12:27

I definitely disagree that the good stuff is more mature/sexual. Some of it is, like Love Hina(well, at least Love Hina Again), Hand Maid May, and Evangelion. However, there is a ton of Anime out there that is good, but is also acceptable for kids. .Hack/Sign is almost totally without violence or sex. Theres no sex in Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, or Inu Yasha, and while these deal with a lot of fighting, its not much worse than DBZ.

This conception of all anime as being like Ninja Scroll (tons of blood and gore, with sex and nudity thrown in there for fun) is a bad one, as 95% of anime is not like that.

By the way, I hate DBZ too. I don't enjoy it for practically the same reasons you stated, as well as just disliking the animation style.

Ryan Dognaux 25-08-2002 20:29

I happen to be a huge fan of DBZ, it's what got me into anime. I don't know what it is, but something about it just makes me want to watch it, perhaps that whole Good versus Evil thing. and yes I've even criticized it for it's length and when they stand around (especially the Cell Games) and talk about stuff that's happening, "hey! He just got punched in the mouth!" when the viewers have seen that 5 seconds ago. Maybe DBZ should've ended way before the entire Majin Buu thing, but I'll still like it no matter what. If by chance you have a .00001% interest in DBZ, You might want to head on over to www.ultimatedbzinfo.com It has to be the greatest DBZ site ever made, the guy really puts a lot of thought and comedy into his writing (Greg Werner). Anyways, that's that.

Mark Hamilton 27-08-2002 19:23

I'm a huge anime fan. I also vastly prefer it subtitled. A few of my favorite titles, in no specific order,:
Cowboy Bebop, all of the Gundams except Gundam X, Lain, Mononoke, X, Berserk, Record of Lodoss War, Wings of Honneamaise, Ghost in the Shell, Card Captor Sakura, Evangelion, Martian Successor Nadesico, Candidate for a Goddess, Patlabor (the tv series), Gasaraki, Perfect Blue, and lots more I can't remember. And to those who don't like anime I'd just like to point out: Most of you are talking about a specific genre of anime. There is more variety in anime then you can find in American Cinema. Don't watch DBZ or Ninja Scroll and assume it is all like that. They play crap on TV, most of which has been horribly dubbed and edited. Assuming that all anime is filled with violence, sex, and oddly colored hair is like assuming Schindler's List is like Indiana Jones because they had the same director. Think about what genres of movies you like and find a store that specializes in anime rentals and ask them for advice. Unless you just hate animation or subtitles you will probably enjoy it.
BTW for those interested in the more realistic side of mecha and robots check out Gasaraki.

Edit: Forgot to mention, Dragonball is not that bad of a series if you watch it the way it was meant to be watched, not the horrible sliced up Funimation version they play on TV. Its actually funny, much like the manga it was based off of.

MBiddy 27-08-2002 20:46

Also half the dialogue in DBZ is grunting or gasping. How do they record that stuff? Do they go into the sound studio and the director guy says "Ok, today we're going to be doing a lot of grunting for the hurt scenes. Act like your really constipated."

Ryan Dognaux 27-08-2002 22:28

Well... let's think about that. If your arm happens to be broken in half, or your body happens to be cut in two... I don't think you're going to be not-making much noise, I'd scream my head off, but yeah anyways, that's not all there is to DBZ, well if you watch the American Dubbed-Editted poo version that's all there is; Watch the real subbed stuff before judging it, please.

DRAGONBALL is probably one of the funniest animes ever, the manga that is. Akira Toriyama is the greatest creator of anime who ever lived, Dr. Slump is hillarious too read that if you can find it... and apparently he has a new series out called "Sandman", I haven't checked that out yet, but I intend to. Toriyama-San is the greatest!

Elgin Clock 28-08-2002 12:26

Ok I have to admit, I am starting to get into anime. Well sort of.

I bought this DVD from Ames cause they are going out of business and it was cheap. The movie is calledMETROPOLIS and it is from the same guy who did Akira. It is the coolest "cartoon" I have seen in a while.
Originally I thought it was an animated version of the silent film of the same name done in the early 1920's but it is different. The budget on this film was close to 15 million dollars. Now I don't know how that relates to other cartoons, but I'm sure it was a lot more expensive than your normal cartoon movie. The animated effects in this movie are awesome.

Simply put, You have to see this movie!!!

Ryan Dognaux 28-08-2002 18:19

Metropolis eh?? looks interesting enough for me to buy it, plus if it's made by the makers of AKIRA, then I'm there.:p

This version of the film is really cool. German People Rock! I think it was dirrected by Fritz Lang. I went to the DIA (Detroit Institute of Art) and saw the dirrectors cut of it last year with the alloy orchestra doing a live soundtrack. It kicked major soccer balls :)

I like Medabots and Pokemon (I have some Medabots cards around my place and some Pokemon cards collecting dust). Digimon was the one of the only animes that I hated. That was because it was a big spoof of Pokemon, just like Duel Masters is a spoof of Yugioh. I've gotten over that rivalry of Digimon and grew to live with it. My favorite animes include Evangalion, Bebop, Yugioh, and others.

Actually I thought Pokemon was a ripoff of Digimon. I think the concept actually came before pokemon. Duel Masters is hilarious. It was suposed to be a saitire of Yugioh and that is what makes it so great.

I'm not much into anime, but here's what I do watch:

- Duel Monsters (it's on when I wake up, so it gives me something to think about)

- Zoids [Both series that was on CN] (I preferred the first one, but the second one was decent...a little to serious though for me)

- Digimon (I don't watch it anymore actually, but I used to watch it everyday until it changed)

Most likely not. If that was so, I would've heard about it, then I would love Digimon more than Pokemon. Besides, Bandi didn't do too well with Digimon like 4 Kids Entertainment did with Pokemon. That's just my opinion, so it may not be accurate to everyone in the forums.
