Talon SRX Failure modes

Has anyone seen a talon that would communicate on the can-bus and even drive a motor one direction but not the other? We've tried re-flashing the firmware but I've just about come to the conclusion that somehow its partially toast. Is this a frequent occurrence? Is there any possibility of recovering it?

What are the Talon LEDs doing?

Sort of sounds like the limit switch input is getting triggered. Any chance it's just the reverse direction that doesn't work? Maybe a piece of metal shaving is in the port shorting pins 8 and 10?

Flashing :yikes: but I'll observe the patterns tonight during our build session. Sorry I didn't include that in the first place.

That's certainly a possibility! I believe it is reverse but I'll check tonight during our build session.

If you're not using the port, keep it covered!

We generally do. However we use breakout boards quite a bit so I need to double check it. Further data was just sent me by one of the students - it works both directions in pwm mode. I'm guessing that means it must be either:
  1. debris in breakout port
  2. an incorrect setting in the roborio talon config page - such as enabling limit switch but setting it to normally closed

I think the second one would cause this exact behavior if the switch wasn't attached.

I wanted to thank everyone for your help - we got the talon that was only moving in one direction working by disabling limit switches via the RIO web interface. I did double check and there wasn't any debris in the port but I believe one of the settings on the settings page had incorrectly set the limit switch as normally closed. This means if no switch is connected the talon see this as the switch being tripped. Thank you all again. Now if I can just resurrect the talon that won't even light up (I know that's not going to happen but I can dream)
