FRC 2729 Scouting app system for the 2015-2016 season

Hello everyone, you may remember our app system from last year: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...hreadid=135153

Well everyone it is back again and better than ever. Our system again consists(so far) of two apps which do the following actions:
  • User app takes in data from the user input
  • Generates QR code of data
  • Master app scans and stores data into a database and a CSV file
  • Able to sort data based on certain categories

We are currently working on the following features:
  • Displaying team summaries and averages
  • Displaying a list of teams that would work well with you based on a query you define

Features this year that we are proud of are:
  • Apps are more user friendly
  • Nav menu used on master app for better user experience
  • User interface is more dynamic
  • Keeping in the spirit of no WiFi with QR codes

We will post regular updates to this thread as we make more and more progress.

Good luck everyone and clap clap whoosh!

UPDATE:

We have completed our analysis for the summary(compiled numbers), average of the summary and all match data as well. We are nearing completion of the system!

clap clap whoosh!

Carl_the_Llama 05-02-2016 14:11

Update?

This app is still set up for last years game. Will it be updated to the 2016 game anytime soon?

We have been working diligently to get the app finished. We have pushed the user application to the play store which can be downloaded at this link:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...d.storm.user16

We plan to publish the master app today to the playstore

Hi,
That is a great idea, thank you very much for sharing.

Some feedback:
I downloaded the non-master app, filled the team #, match and alliance. When I clicked "begin", the app crashed. Happens every time (Motorola XT1225 Androd 5.0.2)
I hope this is useful. Good Luck!

Re: FRC 2729 Scouting app system for the 2015-2016 season

Is there any chance you'll be making a version of the master for Windows phones and Windows 10 devices? Having a computer to view the data would probably be easier than using a tablet. Just saying.

This probably a dumb question but will there be an iOS compatible version?

We apologize for the inconvience. I have tested the android application my own device and have not encountered the error you described. I recommend trying to reinstalling the application from the play store. Again, sorry for the inconvience and we will try to figure out the error

Also as a general note, we will not be able to make an ios version due to the price of a developers account and we do not have experience with windows phone development so more than likely we will not be able to make a windows phone or windows 10 version for this season. Sorry for any inconvience

I have tried 3 different devices with the same result.
You don't have anything to apologize for, our team would like to use your application and we're very glad to provide this feedback. I have submitted the error logs when it crashed, I hope google delivers it to you.
Good luck!

I just downloaded the Storm Scouter and tried it. I get a message that says, "unfortunately Storm Scouter Radar 2015-2016 has stopped". After the message the screen goes back to the home screen again.
I'm running Android v 5.0 on a Samsung Galaxy S5.
Looking forward to a fix soon so I can show it to the team.
Thanks for your work.

I have a Motorola Droid Turbo (XT1254), and it crashed as well after entering all of the data (which was REALLY sluggish)

Great job! I love the app so far, and will continue to mess around with it.

Is there a way to access the source code to customize it for teams needs? For example, if a team wanted to add in an option which asked the user to input information about the type of drive-train a robot has, could that team access the code and add the option into the app? Put simply, is the app customizable?

We have fixed the error. The app was calling too much memory and thus it crashed. We have fixed this error and will push to the play store very soon. We apologize for any inconvience.

We keep the code private on our github right now. If you would like to see an edit made, comment here on chief delphi or on the playstore

Re: FRC 2729 Scouting app system for the 2015-2016 season

OK, it runs now. Some initial observations:
1. I can swipe from the teleop tab back to the Auto tab but not vice-versa. I have to manually press on the Tele tab to advance.
2. In Auto there is something labeled Starting Position but I don't see anyplace to enter a value for the position itself.
3. I like the diagram of the defenses at the bottom. they could come in handy.
4. In Teleop the interface for incrementing count of high/low goals is not obvious. Seems kind of clunky but it works. Same with the human player questions. The checkboxes for the ranking points looks good.
5. In Defenses tab the checkboxes are good but should the 2nd checkbox for each defense be labeled "Crossed and Damaged"?
I can't really test the QR code generation accuracy until the master app is ready.
Looking promising, good job.

If I am understanding #2 correctly, there is a white box below the title "Starting Position". Tapping the white box will cause a drop down menu to appear, which lists all the defenses, as well as an option for the spy position. This option states which defense the robot started out in front of in the beginning of autonomous.

Oh, I see that now. I guess I was thinking of a defensive position starting number (1-5) but it makes sense now.

In an effort to make the app more phone friendly we had to had horizontal scrolling. We noticed the issue with the tab switching and plan on looking for a fix soon. I will talk with the rest of the scouting team about the increment interface. The master app is live on the play store

Re: FRC 2729 Scouting app system for the 2015-2016 season

I have some observations as well (Motorola XT1225 Android 5.0.2):

Scouter App:

1. In the starting screen, scrolling down to the links section is really slow, even crashed one time. The rest is fine when speed is concerned.
2. AUTO tab has very large icons, it cut fit better (that's a minor issue).

Master App:
1. The app crashes when the QR is scanned. Logs were submitted.

General questions on the app:

As far as I understood, it will generate a single QR for the whole database in the scouter device. Right? Isn't there a limit of teams until you HAVE to send to the Master app?

Is there a way to examine the database in the Scouter App, edit or delete entries, etc?

For user app:

-We will try to fix the scrolling. I believe we have a fix for that soon
-The image we can try. Its size changes drastically when trying to fix it
-There is no limit at the moment. A good rule of thumb I found was 3 matches
-At the moment you cannot edit the scouter database. That is why we implemented dialog messages to make sure the scouter is sure they want to submit the data

For Master app:
-The error that occurred only happens when the scouter app is updated but the master's parser is not. We checked it this afternoon and the app works so the master should work now. You may just have to update the app

Thank you for the feedback

In the app description it states that the data is sent to csv file that opens in excel. It is located where files are stored on the device

I observed it with both apps up to date, as far as the Play Store informs (Master v1.1, User v2.1).

Did you submit an error log? I will have to see if it is the newest version that was updated on the play store. Sometimes the play store does not update right away and if the scouter is more updated than master, the master app parser will fail. Please ensure you have version 2.2 for the user and version 1.2 for the master

I love your app! But is there one for iphones? About a third of our team uses iphones and that would be a huge help. Also, the app would be nice if all of it would show up on the page, at least horizontally. Would it be possible for you to make it so we can modify it for our team's specific needs?

Hello there. I'm not OP, but I am on STORM Robotics as well. Unfortunately, we are not on iOS due to the recurring developers fees that come with being an Apple developer. Android only requires a one time low fee for putting apps on the Play Store. We have a set of android tablets that the team scouters use, so it works out for us.

Perhaps in the future we will invest in iOS to broaden our user base.

Very well put!
It'd be very nice to broaden our horizons with iOS development, but like you said it's pricey and it'd most likely exceed the nearly non-existent budget that we at software have.
It would be quite interesting though, as many people in the world are iOS users as opposed to Android users.

Actually, the tides turned a while back: http://www.idc.com/prodserv/smartpho...rket-share.jsp

To the OP, our team is thinking about using your app, but we were wondering if a few changes could be made (possibly)?
  • Phone support (screen size < 7 inches)
  • A qualitative scale for crossing the defenses (each defense could have a scale of three answers: really good, OK, not great)

We love the idea!

As for this, I work with the OP on Scouting and we'll have to see what we can do to help with that.
A fair amount of testing for screen size is being done, as we have been sacrificing my phone during meetings (a Galaxy S5) to see if it works on smaller screens.

Hello. Sorry for the delay. To start making your own app, you should be proficient in the java programming language. Then, you want to go to developers.android.com and view their documentation and programming exercises. Lastly, you want to look at youtube videos on android development. These are the steps I took to becoming a proficient android developer

Also as an update, we will be releasing a new update to the app soon. This one will have better phone layouts and a graphical representation of data. Once it is live, I will post an update.

With the competition days away, the team was wondering if there was a way to export this into excel? Thanks!

Sorry about the delayed response to your post. The master app kicks the data out to a csv file you can bring into excel.

Hello,

Team 5179 would be happy to use your app for this year's competition. However, I see no iOS version exists. I've got an apple dev license, so I can at least try to port to iOS and get it approved for inclusion in app store. Can I have access somehow to the source code in order to port it?

Thanks,
Alexandre Croteau

Team 291 used your app at our first competition with much success! It was very easy for all of our Scouters to use and they loved it. Also, there were many teams that became very interested in our new scouting system. Glad we could use the app on our Samsung tablets!

Where would I find the Excel CSV in the phone/tablet's memory storage? What path should I be looking for?

Also, there appears to be a minor labeling bug on one of your summary pages, where there's a heading of "high goal" and the data is labeled # of shots in low goal. It's obvious what is intended, but you definitely should fix that.

This is great to hear! We are very glad you liked it and hope that you continue to use it. Don't forget to mention us if someone asks where the app is from :p Thanks for supporting Storm!

The CSV file should be on the highest level of the file explorer, being in the directory with all the folders in the file explorer(i.e. Downloads and Pictures). If the file does not appear, then reboot the device. We noticed that if the file does not appear, the device has to be restarted. As for the labeling issue, we realized at our last competition the issue with the high goal data being labeled low goal in the individual cells. We seem to have an issue with generating a suitable play store app file right now but are able to generate a general app file to use for install. We are currently at work to try and create a endpoint for teams to download this updated file without the play store.

Final app downloads

Hey guys. We at storm wanted to let you know that we have the final statistics for our scouting app. For our user app, we have 468 total downloads and for the master it was 385. That is almost double last years results! Thanks to all of you who used the app and helped us make it better! Hope your app experience was a good one and hope you scout with us again next year!

Clap clap whoosh!
