Animation Challenge

Hey, I just had an Idea

...actually, I saw this on another 3d animation forum.

Alright, the idea is a monthly/weekly animation challenge. I would post a picture or just give a general description of something to make in 3ds max, and then interested animators (you guys!) would go make it. However, there is no competition involved, no prizes or anything of the sort. The key to this entire thing would be to post updates as often as you can and describe EXACTLY what you did to achieve your results, so inexperienced ppl can learn exactly what a person does to achieve desired effects (in my opinion, much better than a tutorial)

I have seen this type of thing done on other forums and it seems to be successful.

I dunno how posting pictures works on this site (do you upload to the gallery and then link to it, or do you have to have web space?) but these would also be key to this.

So, would anyone like to give this a shot?

To post a picture on the forum is easy. When you post a message, at the bottom, below where write, it says "Attach file". This will put any picture from your computer in your post.

One thing to keep in mind..I remember Brandon saying at some point that he would rather you put a picture in the photo gallery and link to it instead of putting it directly into your post...it had something to do with how the images are stored in the database...

thanx for the info, but is anyone interested?

Keep in mind I would try to keep these challenges small so you can easily work on them in your free time...Ideally the challenge would be something most people can do but would require some advanced techniques to make it look amazing.

Yeah, the images when attached are stored in the database. If the images are relevant to a category in the picture gallery, then go ahead and upload them there. If they don't really fit any of the categories, then I'd rather you stored them off-site and link to them. This saves us storage space and bandwidth.

I may set up another site where people can store signature files and other files they wish to link to.

Would anybody be interested in a site like that? I'd have to limit it to a certain amount of images [probably by filesize]. If it works out for you, and would like more than the alotted space, we could work out a very very cheap payment plan via PayPal to help pay for any extra storage space you would need. [small small being $1-$2/month per Xmb, X is TBD]

Anyway, reply if you would be interested in using a site like that. I could hook the membership up to the chiefdelphi.com database, yada yada.

Gotta think about it for a bit, I guess. And wait for some feedback from what you guys would want.

I would be interested in this, plus I know it would be a great way to help out and maybe even sniff out the competition.

Chris Nowak 26-08-2002 12:25

Sweet! Someone is interested! However, this isn't gonna happen if more people don't like this. C'mon everyone, you know you want a way to show off your awesome MAX skills!

Trashed20 26-08-2002 14:40

count me in.

ps, don't do a segway modeling thing, its too easy. :)

Chris Nowak 26-08-2002 15:25

Also, any people who aren't very experienced are absolutely free to join, and it will of course be the job of the more experienced to help them and show them good techniques.

One last time - to get this on the top of the latest threads list - C'mon ppl, it will be fun, a great learning experience because everyone gets to share techniques, and you get to know the skill of other teams.

interesting thought

I too would be interested in this. However, I don't know that I'd be able to be as productive as I hope to be with college starting and whatnot. I would also have some trouble posting pictures (without a website and all...but we'll see about that when the time comes). So I'll keep checking to see if we get started here.

That's not the attitude we are looking for, what you should do is find a pc on campus that has Max loaded onto it and model off of it. I found a slew at mine and I seem to be the only one that knows what the program is so I think that 10 computers will soon basically belong to me. :D

SlamminSammy 28-08-2002 00:49

Well, my models aren't that great, but my special effects'll havta cover. I'm in!

What attitude is that? I'm just saying that I don't know I'll have the TIME because of the whole college endeavor...plus my spare time will be eaten up by trying to start that new team. I have a computer sitting right in front of me. The problem will be uploading pictures because I don't have a site to link to...but that could change before this thing gets underway. A second site like Brandon mentioned would be perfect for a project like this.

I was just joking around. My joke was you shouldn't put college in front of animation, instead use college to further your animation skills. Though it is a joke, that's exactly what I am doing right now. :P
