FRC Boulder Smell Database
I noticed a lot of teams discussing the smell of their boulders. One post here:https://www.reddit.com/r/FRC/comment...boulder_smell/
In response to this and my need to do something robotics related while in class, I created the Boulder Smell Database found at http://bouldersmells.ddns.net/ I have never done web design with actual input or function. Hopefully I will find the time to add features such as sorting and searching. If you have any questions or comments you're welcome to leave them below. |
Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
We've done it. We've officially run out of things to discuss.
That being said, I'll definitely smell our boulders today, mostly out of morbid curiosity. |
Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
How about the Rhino treads?
Our team was fighting over whether those smelled like sugar cookies or marshmallows. |
Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
Mmmm outgassing polymers, aka "new car smell".
Smells like "may cause cancer in the state of California". |

Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
For some reason, our Rhino treads smell like cake frosting with sprinkles. I have no idea why. Is this the same way with everyone else?

Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
Last week I bought a new timing belt for a tank tread prototype, opened the packaging and placed it on the table in our robotics work area. I turned around for a minute, then looked back and saw half the students passing the tread around smelling it. I thought the students on my team were...uh...unique. But this thread proves me wrong.

Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
Maybe it's just me, but I seem to have a strange error where, when I click the table, it brings me back to the top of the site? (I'm not that fussed, just wanted to let you know so you could improve your code :) )

I KNEW I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE
No, seriously... I was randomly handed a boulder and was cradling it to my chest. I caught a whiff of it and I was like, "Um, who's making cookies?" no one tell my team this but i was considering eating it ::rtm:: |
Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
This is a weird thread!!!

Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
Nathaniel,
As I am sure you are aware by now, your website does not validate or sanitize user inputs. Just look at your data table now. Just something you should keep in mind for the future if you go into webdesign or anything that lets the user input data. Neat website though! |
Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
Still can't beat the smell of blue nitrile.

Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
I hope you feel very powerful. You just managed to get a whole ton of nerds to smell foam balls and have conversations about them without ever actually questioning their own motives. *slow clap*

Mods can lock or delete this post if you would like. I wanted to move on to bigger and better projects with my server.

Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
Our boulder probably smells like coolant.
|
Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
Ours smells just like a little sweat or something bad.
|
Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
After extensive testing and wafting of the 2016 boulders, Team 4118 Roaring Riptide concludes that the boulders do indeed have distinct smells. Our original boulder from the kit of parts exudes smells similar to that of a coconut with a hint of pineapple. Alluding to the notion that manufacturers were drinking piņa colada during assembly. However our second boulder has an extravagant smell that a team member concludes as "day old cheesecake." We hope that our findings contribute to the hot topic of boulder odor and would ask for more variety in Boulder smell from manufacturers to spruce up the build space.

Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
People are trying to figure out what a foam ball smells like? Jeez, I knew the folks on Chief Delphi were crazy, but not this much. :)

Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
Blue nitrile smells like sugar cookie dough. It's my happy place on long stressful build days. :o

Re: FRC Boulder Smell Database
Just kidding. Just saw that AndyMark mentioned the website so I put it back up for a bit. http://bouldersmells.ddns.net
