Free Stuff WOOHOO

Hey check this out FIRST is giving it away

http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/yardsale2002.htm

and can we possibly take into account what there giving away to mean a change in the kit.

Hmmmmm...... (Thinks to himself how much those teams with the forfty motor drives will have to go back to the drawing board when they relize FIRST is eliminating the Fisher Price)

Aaron Lussier 04-09-2002 18:14

Thats during River Rage I guess you could go in between matches or something.

David Kelso 04-09-2002 18:51

River Rage and the Yard sale are across the river from each other but with traffic, I would count on about 15 minutes one way. But, an advisor could always go I guess.

Twenty teams coming as of today....

David Kelly 04-09-2002 20:59

im dumb... im moving my post to here

can anyone pick up some stuff for me?

http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/yardsale2002.htm

with them just giving away all of this "surplus" stuff, maybe we will be getting some "new" stuff this year. they're giving away motors for free. hmmm....

D.J. Fluck 04-09-2002 22:51

Hrm, Im not doing anything this weekend..... Indianapolis Intl to Manchester for one day.... That might not be too bad, and heck i get a 70 pound weight allowance on the plane.... :D

w00t!! I'll be there, I'll see if anyone else is interested in missing a match or two of River Rage to go!!!

If your interested in going find me at River Rage, I'll be hanging around my pit area (Team 237) and will more than likely have a camcorder in one hand! Find me early so we can plan!!! like around 8:00-9:00
I have room for about 4 people in my car, with trunk space as well. I have to see if anyone from my team wants to go first but, if there's room I'll be more than happy to drive. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Find me early so we can plan. I don't want to have a team advisor of yours think I'm trying to kidnap anyone! LOL

Alfred Thompson 05-09-2002 12:26

NH to IN and back - just drive

I drove out to Indiana (from NH) and back on a weekend a few years ago. Figure 1000 miles each way door to door. Leave Friday morning and get to Manchester in time to pick up free goodies. Nap a bit and drive home. You could make it for SUnday diner. I did. :)

Greg Perkins 05-09-2002 21:51

hell yea i will be there, i lovvvvvvvve free stuff, how do u think i built my battlebot???(muahahaha)

Badjokeguy

Adam Y. 06-09-2002 19:44

Meh I can't go lol I live too far away form NH. Ooo well thats why there is surplus.:) Two of the best used motors for battlebots are surplus.

Adrian Wong 07-09-2002 15:45

Hm, I wonder why they're giving away the crimp tools and pneumatics equipment as well. Does this mean some change in the electrical or pneumatic portion of the kits? Pre-crimped wires seem inconvenient.

Greg Perkins 07-09-2002 18:20

hmmm....

*pondering*
Yea it was kinda weird that they had a case of Thomas&Betts crimping tools, they are like 30 bucks a peice, i got three, but it seemed strange. o yea we might not have the chip's next year, its gonna be a mystery

Wayne C. 07-09-2002 20:37

what was in the giveaways?

anybody know exactly what was given away today? It might be a clue at what might NOT be in the kit this spring. The loss of window track motors would be a personal loss for me....

Adrian Wong 07-09-2002 20:45

Some things I saw:
  • casters
  • ball bearings
  • Belimo torque (orange) motors
  • Mabuchi motors
  • Window Motors
  • Fisher Price motors & gearboxes
  • Pneumatic cylinders
  • Pneumatic tanks
  • Rocker switches
  • Crimp tools
  • Heat shrink tubing
  • Electronic work boxes
  • Johnson Electric motors
  • Micro-switches

Aaron Lussier 07-09-2002 22:24

I know for a fact that one kid on my team got a box of 18 Atwood Chipuha motors.

maybe he could have shared - no need for taking 18 of anything (except really small things), let alone an item that MANY teams would have loved to have.

Gracious Profesionalism please.

Tom

David Kelly 07-09-2002 22:33

you cant use any of the motors on next years robot anyways. what are you using these motors on for a project that is out of season?

Adrian Wong 08-09-2002 09:13

I thought the Atwood motors were not part of the yard sale (at least, that's what I heard from the person standing on the dock).

In any case, if there are any teams around Hopkinton, MA that didn't have a chance to go up there, we'd be glad to share some of our motors. No Atwoods, but I did manage to snag some Mabuchi motors and some that I can't quite identify (they have a black cover in the back, with two prongs sticking out -- old Johnson motors?). So, just PM me if you're interested. (But you'd have to come to us in Hopkinton.)

Andy A. 08-09-2002 13:12

The motors with the black cap on them are Johnson motors... they should say Johnson inc or somthing to that effect on them.

We didn't get much, a few FP and window motors, some project boxes and a cylinder or two. The big score for us was a half dozen of those excellent big crimp tools. Those are great, they give a lot more crimping/cutting force then the all purpose stripping tools, a great feature for the less burly members of our team. I was told there were boxes of them. I'm amazed that FIRST would give away such great tools for free, each one must cost $15 to $20 retail. I suppose this means they won't be in the kit anymore. :(

Oh well, I won't complain. We only have one other pair, and it's always being used when you need it most.

AS i recall, the reason he got 18, was because that was they were only giving them away by the case(18). So he did not do anything anti-gracious.

w00t

Well it looks like Amanda Morrison and I will most likely be making the drive out there from Indiana to rock the river rage and to get some stuff from FIRST. Due to John saying that 'we have to come check out how the east coast does it'

I heard someone say its about 1000 miles? Rock on!

Elgin Clock 21-07-2003 12:20

wow, talk about a resurrected thread...

Yeah, This thread was for the one last year (02) but I guess we can make it abut this years too!!

If you read the posts in this thread, you will notice talk of people taking more than what they need, or what they will use.. or just plain being greedy!!

As we novices to the "free stuff at first giveaway" already know, the items in the giveaway are more than likely obsolete in the upcoming years competition.

So, if you are taking stuff to "stock up" for next year, forget about it!!!

But, if you are taking stuff to bring back to your teams to practice with and give the newbies and idea of what the materials sometimes consist of and the motors work and such, then take stuff.

Just don't be greedy!!!

There was a person at last years giveaway that took 4 batteries..

That's a little much don't you think???

Anyways, just remember two words people; Gracious Professionalism!!

edit: Ok ok, I'll have to admit something here!!! I walked out of the tag sale last year with 5 boxes of crimpers... In each box there were 10 crimpers.. So in total I left the giveaway with 50 crimpers..

BUT... I can vouch for all 50 of those crimpers that each and everyone of them found a home between FIRST teammates and friends!!

Besides, there was a whole pallet full of them when I got there!

Any-who......

Amanda Morrison 21-07-2003 17:20

I'm looking for someone to make the trip with Josh and I...

If anyone from the Midwest wants to make the trip for the Yard Sale and River Rage, let me know. We'll stay Friday night, and make the trip back on Saturday/Sunday.

Get a hold of me as soon as possible. Either PM me or reach me at ammorrison@bsu.edu.

Dan Richardson 21-07-2003 20:59

Elgin Clock 02-09-2003 17:10
