Last year we used 2, this year 2.;)

Re: Poll: How many CIMs are you using?

Four drive CIMs this year, supplemented with a PG-27 on our intake wheels and pneumatics for intake extend/retract, stretching the launch springs, and engaging/releasing the latch on the launch springs.

Last year we also had four CIMs, three for the H/slide drive, and one for the lift, no other actuators. (We had a passive pickup.)

Dibit1010 15-02-2016 09:18

We are using 6 CIMs, 2 miniCIMs, and two window motors

Dalas 15-02-2016 10:20

Re: Poll: How many CIMs are you using?

I voted 6, but we're actually using 4-CIMs and 4-miniCIMs (in our drivetrain), as well as 2 RS775's and another mini-CIM for a mechanism.

5 Cims 2 Mini cims. We were originally using 6 cims 2 mini cims and 2 bags but we abandoned a mechanism.

Currently 4, but we have a couple of mechanisms that might need a little more power than the current motors, so it could very well be six by the end of the week....

There have been a few times that we have put six on our drive train....

If you are running them all on new Talon SRXs. Half that if you run them all on new Sparks.

For us the real number is even less, because we are running many of our motors on controllers re-used from earlier years. They'll show on our CAW at the appropriate cost, of course.

Not to worry... we have a plan.
We need a bunch of energy at the end of the match...we are lifting very quickly... 4 of the 775's are for that (about 3 -4 seconds)... another for getting the hook up... so about 2 seconds for that one...

We have an active current management system in place too...
It will be interesting.

We are running on all Talon SRX controllers. (Utilizing CAN... we did that successfully last year too... the new CAN works quite well) this really cleans up the wiring... all encoders are run back through CAN. Reliable to date...

Whoa there, I'm interested to see what makes 4x775pros necessary for a 3-4 second climb. For our winch, we're using a single CIM, 10.71:1 reduction with a .5" pulley that gives a fairly robust ~4.5sec lift time.

Bob Steele 17-02-2016 17:10

Re: Poll: How many CIMs are you using?

We will be posting a reveal sometime after bag day.
2 --775's would probably do it.... We have plenty of weight... We are using all of our CIM's in the drive base.

Perhaps we can show you in St. Louis? If we both make it.

were doing 4 cims on the drive train, you would have to ask the students what else. i just fix things that break and machine things that they tell me are impossible.

what really concerns me is the 17 teams that are not using cims. well except apple pie, btw if you need a few extra throttle motors we'll hook you up. i think theirs one in my wives toyota i dont think she'll notice its gone.

Re: Poll: How many CIMs are you using?

I'm curious as to the appeal for bag motors for the intake. Originally we had bag motors as well, but after the reduction required to get that 13,000 rpm to something usable and the potential for busting a motor, we switched to a minicim. It's more robust, requires less reduction, and can be run longer without overheating. The two disadvantages would be the size and power draw, but I don't find it significant enough to get a 100:1 versa and not direct drive.

It's all about power and weight.

BAG motors are good for ~150 watts of power and is listed at 0.71 lbs
MiniCIMs are good for ~215 and 2.16 lbs

So changing from a BAG motor to a MiniCIM gets you ~45% more power but with 200% more weight. For comparison, a 775Pro is rated at 130% more power and 12% more weight to a BAG.

If you don't need 215 watts, a BAG motor is a lighter and smaller alternative. If you need 215 watts or more, than the BAG motor isn't the right choice. Overall though, it's an excellent motor for most small mechanisms on robots.

Your forgetting about the reduction. You need roughly 4x the reduction for a 775 pro compared to a CIM. More than often this requires multiple reductions (with hard to find gears) or a VP adding weight, complexity and size.

You wouldn't need reduction on a CIM or MiniCIM? Relatively few mechanisms work well without any gearing at all.

A VP stage and ring gear (not including ends) is 0.132 lbs, well under the weight difference if you just need an additional 4:1 stage in an existing gearbox. You could also use a CIMile for the 775Pro (but not BAG motor) which weighs 0.4 lbs, still under the weight delta of switching to a CIM.

There are also many suppliers of 32dp gears or small pitch belts which can be mounted directly on a 775Pro shaft. There are plenty of ways to use these great motors.

dradel 19-02-2016 23:15

Our team is using 775's and also vp for the first time this year. Have to say the 775's are a nice little motor. And I wish I had found the vp a couple years ago!
