Brandon's Sig

How does brandon get what song he is listening to at the time in his sig? Does he just change it that often to trick us?

Brandon Martus 10-09-2002 23:43

......maybe :)

Jeff Rodriguez 10-09-2002 23:45

AHHH! is driving me crazy, how do you do it?

I'm guessing PHP magic.

Greg Perkins 11-09-2002 09:57

It may be Perl script. A friend of mine has done the same thing, only using signatures that are dynamically generated :)

Brandon Martus 11-09-2002 10:57

A winamp plugin updates the song on the server.

A crontab entry which runs a php script that updates my signature w/the new song every 5-10 min, if it changed.

Sorry, I can't do this for everyone, so don't ask. I'll probably take it down soon, anyway.

I've got a better idea, which will allow everyone to do this, if they want. I've noticed a few of you (Wetzel, in particular) put the song your listening to manually in your post.. so it could be worth the hassle.

EDIT: Does anybody know how to (or want to) write a plugin for Winamp 3.
I started writing what the plugin should do, but then it kept getting more and more complicated.
So, if anybody wants to learn (or knows how) to program a winamp plugin, contact me and we'll work out the details.

Wetzel 11-09-2002 12:55

I started working on a winamp plugin to get the song title/author and put it in Trillian IRC. Then found that I couldn't do that with Trillian 0.73. Hopefully Trillian .74 has better scripting support, or maybe Pro.
Winamp Application Programming Interface fow Winamp 2. ("It doesn't just own you, you own it. ")
Winamp 3 uses Maki, which is part of Wasabi, which I havn't bothered looking at much, I still use my trusty 2.8. (IMO Winamp 3 = bloated)

One observation. When I add it to the end of a post, it stays constant. A sig would change. Some may want that, but the way I do it you can always see what I was listening to when I wrote it.(I also can trackmy own listening patterns) So ifyou are talking about a new button on the reply to topic page to insert current artist - songtitle, I could take a stab at writing a Winamp plugin(for 2)

I would definetly add it to the end of the post, not the signature. It would probably be interesting to track song listening patterns.

Winamp3 can use winamp2 plugins, by way of a winamp3 plugin.. so if you want to do it via winamp2 plugin, that'd work just as well.

It needs the following configuration options:
  • Script Path
  • Username
  • Password
  • Info String (see below)

For Info String, i'd like to do some sort of user-custom formatting, with allowed vBCode, like so:
[i ]I am listening to [b ]%1 - %2[/b ] at %h:%i:%s[/i ]

Which would come out to
I am listening to Yellowcard - Rock Star Land at 1:13:35

And we can assign each part of the ID3 tag a value. %1, %2, %3, so on. And have other values for time, date, etc.

With this, we'd have to limit the length of that string on the client side, and I'd take care of checking it on the server as well.

The password will have to be md5 encrypted before doing the HTTP post, for security reasons.

I'll post more if I think of other things.
Post your thoughts/ideas, too.

Think this is do-able, Wetzel?

evulish 22-09-2002 00:48

Port it to Xmms! Dooo it!

sanddrag 22-09-2002 01:19

I believe you can do something similar with Javascript. Has anyone thought of or heard of this?

Brandon Martus 22-09-2002 02:24

Yeah, but I'm not going to allow JavaScript in signatures... so that cuts out that idea..

Once the plug-in is done, this will be a pretty cool little feature.

Trashed20 22-09-2002 10:17

how hard would it be to have it post to a mysql table and then have the sig query for the certain username? do we have access to our username variable in VBulletin?

Rob Colatutto 22-09-2002 11:01

why not write the plugin for sonique 2? mml is extremely simple to use, and the player is much more flexible and in all, a better player than any version of winamp

evulish 22-09-2002 11:57

Well...seeing as how Winamp is the most popular Win32 mp3 player...that would most likely be the best choice.

Not hard. That part is 95% done, actually. The hard (read: time intensive) part is the winamp plugin. I just have to wait for Wetzel to do the plugin, or to go ahead and do it myself.
