Events will have 3 full sets of defenses. One set is for the practice field, and is designated as the spares for the competition field in the unlikely event that a defense is damaged past functioning.

Is that something new? Most Regionals I've been to in the last 10 years did not have a full practice field, let alone full-spec field elements. Usually a nearby team just brings a set of team-spec elements.

This still won't be a full practice field. For the most part the practice field will be the same size, scope, and quality of previous year's practice fields. Just the defenses will be full field spec, but only one set of them, instead of the two the main field will have.

Most regionals (I can't speak for district events) should have at least one set of field elements. For example, in 2012 there would just be the four hoops and one bridge, in 2013 the goals and one pyramid, etc. Definitely not a full practice field, though...

For anyone with labview,
If you press space bar when the robot is enabled, you will trigger the emergency disable. If I recall the only way out of that afterwards is to reboot the robot.

Just a little tip if you get to practice with your bot.

Also the same for Java.

In addition to what others have already said, there will also be one base for the defenses to sit in, not a full complement, so there will have to be swapping out to test on each one. The tower will be of the wooden variety but the defenses are the same ones that you will play on the real field with. They are the spares for the real field so they are just being put to use instead of sitting in storage for the event.

They are heavy (Field Reset is going to earn their Volunteer Food this year) and extremely well built. My wife would probably bring out the term, over-engineered, which I would agree with but very much needed in an FRC field due to exactly what you brought up.

Unlikely also does not mean never. However, FIRST does not want to have to ship out replacements especially since they would have to be extreme rushed to get to the next stop for that field (read: EXPENSIVE) so it was in their best interest to make sure these things will perform at least as specified.

Replying to myself because it looks like FIRST has some work to do on the Cheval de Frise (the most vulnerable to physical damage). In the first 9 matches in Palmetto, 3 times this one has been disabled (and now taken out of the mix while they are figuring out a plan). I wish the stream was better than 280p so that I could see what was actually happening to them.

This is one reason why a Week 0.5 was considered a good thing. There are lots of FIRST people onsite and at HQ to work the problem.
