Competition Awards

Just a few general questions about awards, in particular for rookie teams. If a team wins rookie allstar in one competition can they win it in another? How many different ways to get to worlds are there for rookies? Can 1 team sweep all the rookie awards at a comp? Im really sorry if theres a thread for this that i didnt see already.

No, you may not win Rookie All-Star (or any of the other culture change awards) at two like events in one season. Correction as pointed out below.

Rookies can get to the FIRST Championship via winning RAS, Engineering Inspiration or the playoff rounds at a regional. District rookie teams can also acquire on the the slots for their district.

There is no firm rule (I could find) preventing a rookie team from getting all three rookie awards but the judges can opt to not give Rookie All-Star or Rookie Inspiration. I do not believe a sweep has happened since the awards have become optional.

More details are available in the admin manual.

Where is it written that you cannot win Rookie All-Star (or Engineering Inspiration for that matter) at more than one event of the same level in a given year? I looked through the admin manual and only found that clause to be on the Chairman's Award.

I ask because if that is the case, then that is a relatively recently change because Team 4499 won Rookie All-Star at two regionals in 2013.

4451 won 2 rookie all-star awards in the same season in 2013 as well. 3 if you count the World's Rookie All-star they won in Newton.

It is a recent addition, I believe it started in 2015.

I cannot find a post on it right now but I remember an instance in 2015 when a team won EI for the second time because the judges were unaware and Frank had to post a blog regarding it. Edit: Here's the CD thread of the post I remembered. The link to the blog post does not work. This seems to have been at a district.

Here's a thread discussing it and giving examples of it happening at regionals in 2015.

The manual gives no reference to it this year so I expect RAS is fair game for multiple wins and would then open up a wild card slot.

In 2014, 4991 swept Rookie All Star, Rookie Inspiration and Highest Rookie Seed in at the regional level, as they were the only rookie at the event. Judges made a point to say that both awards were earned rather than freebies.

It really comes down to the judging advisor for the event you are at. Judges are aware that RAS is a ticket to Championship, winning it came make a big difference to a first year program in terms of gaining traction at home.
Winning RAS a multiple events is usually a function of how large the rookie field is at those events.

That thread (and associated blog post) seems to be specifically referring to districts, which have different advancement criteria out of necessity because of how they operate. Does this restriction apply to regionals as well?

Not to my knowledge [1]

[1] I've not JA'd a regional and it's been 4 years since I judged at one.
