2016 MAR Season
The 2016 MAR season is about to begin! One hundred and twenty-one MAR teams are signed up, the same amount as last year (since our 8 rookie teams are offset by 8 lost teams). Fifty-five teams will go to Lehigh for the MAR District Championship and twenty-two teams, plus the three HoF teams (103, 341, and 356), will go St. Louis for the FIRST Championship.
Here's a spreadsheet showing which events team are attending. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...0M/edit#gid=22 I may be missing a few Regionals or External Districts that teams are going to, let me know and I'll add it to the sheet. Re: 2016 MAR Season
Excellent work as always, I love the color gradients for past performance!
This will be a big time saver for prescouting robots at other events, even outside MAR. |
Re: 2016 MAR Season
Thanks, this is super useful as a CSA. The night before I usually go through each team to figure out if they are a first play, or a rookie as I want to visit them as early as possible.
|
Re: 2016 MAR Season
Good luck to everyone this weekend! Looking forward to seeing other 2016 MAR robots in person for the first time at Hatboro.
|
Re: 2016 MAR Season
Congratulations to 1257, 5624 and 1676 for winning Mt. Olive!
Also to 1218, 2590 and 5407 for winning Hatboro! I was at Hatboro and was impressed by a lot of the robots, particularly 834 and 25. Both had very solid low goal scoring robots and excellent drivers. Inexplicably, the 2016 District ranking points website isn't live for 2016 yet. I'm not sure why, since from what I remember it updated live last year. The Blue Alliance rankings also aren't giving any points for Alliance Selection, Elims or Awards. EDIT:The Blue Alliance is now correctly showing district ranking points. |

Re: 2016 MAR Season
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this so if it's not, let me know. Anyway, I am a mentor from Team 5401 and received this e-mail from the Mid-Atlantic Region's District Advocate:
Hope everyone who competed this past weekend had fun. While I was judging at the Hatboro-Horsham Event, I was made aware of an issue pertaining to Team 87, Diablo from Rancocas Valley Regional High School District. It went out all of the teams in the MAR Region and we have one we might be able to lend them but I am not sure so I thought I would post this here in case another team was certain they did. |
Re: 2016 MAR Season
I greatly appreciate The Blue Alliance tracking District Ranking Points (and the official FIRST site too, if it ever starts working again), but I also enjoy being able to see how the rankings and MAR/World Championship advancement would play out by inputting hypothetical scenarios. So, I made this Google Doc to track the MAR Rankings through the 2016 season: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing.
I'll be continuously updating this document ASAP over the next coming weeks of competitions. I'll also do my best to update it real-time offline at MAR Champs, so feel free to find me there if you'd like a (completely unofficial) preview at your team's World Championship advancement prospects. Please message me if you find any errors in the document. Thanks so much to Jack Greenbaum for the template, with credit also given to previous ranking Google Docs created by Scott Meredith and Antonio Papa. |

Also, Team 1676 earned the Chairman's Award at the Buckeye Regional this past weekend, advancing them to the World Championship and taking away a MAR point slot. |

Also congratulations to 11, 225 and 423 for winning Springside-Chestnut Hill! I caught some of the first day on the webcast, and the competition looked intense. I was very impressed with 225's design, hope to see you at Lehigh! Finally, congratulations to 2590, 365 and 1626 for winning Seneca. It was nice seeing 365 and 2590 pair up to win Seneca like they did in 2012 when I was on the team. I was very impressed by 365, 1640 and 1089. All three of them had very nice high goal shots from the outer works. Additionally, it seems like the official 2016 district ranking points website is online. I'm not sure why it took until week 3 to get running, but I'm glad it's here now. |
Re: 2016 MAR Season
Congratulations to 2590, 365 and 1626 for winning Sennica. You had a excellent alliance and we pushed as hard as we could and brought out the best in both alliances in the finals and put on one heck of a show. Thanks to our alliance partners teams 4573 and 6203 for being our partners. Both were great partners and can only get better as the season goes on.

I watched some Seneca footage last night, and I was very impressed with the 2590 & 365 alliance. We definitely have our work cut out for us to make our outer works shots more consistent for Westtown and MAR Champs. :) |

Anyone doing the mathematical tracking and prediction of where the DCMP cutoff will be?

Re: 2016 MAR Season
1626 Falcon Robotics would like to thank our alliance partners 2590 Nemesis and 365 MOE for the honor and the opportunity to run with them at MAR Seneca. Thank you for believing in us and taking a chance on us. 1626 will remain part MOEbot and part Nemesis forever. In all, we were aided by almost half of the teams present in our efforts to stay on the field and improve after we broke in our Saturday Practice match. Special thanks to Jack in the MAR machine shop who fabricated about 10 custom parts for us and to Matt and his crew from 1089 Mercury that kept us in ideas, raw materials and manpower. This event showed the Best of the FIRST community and it's concept of gracious professionalism.
Our friends from 1640 Sabotage,4573 Rambots and 6203 Blue Devil's were true intense competitors and were genuinely gracious in defeat. We offer them our congratulations and respect. They were true gladiators and warriors. The Iron Devil's, 1647, were fantastic hosts and we congratulate them on their well-earned Chairman's Award. We also can't thank enough all of the hard-working and dedicated volunteers that make this event special. |

Re: 2016 MAR Season
It's worth noting that it appears 3637 is now registered for the World Championships via the waitlist. I don't recall whether or not this takes away from MAR's 22 World Championship slots (I don't believe it does, but don't quote me on that), nor do I remember what happens if they additionally qualify for STL by winning, earning a qualifying award, or being given a point slot at MAR Champs.
|
Re: 2016 MAR Season
Congrats to 2590, who were finalists at South Florida and earned a wildcard spot to the Championship. Also congrats to 11, who won the South Florida Chairman's Award.
For those counting, that's 3 point slots deducted from MAR's overall total (1676 CA, 2590 Finalist, 11 CA) |

Well there goes week 5! With only event left before MAR Champs we should expect invites for teams with mathematical locks on a DCMP bid to go out early this week. (Last year it was Tuesday).
We (5895) had a blast at the Bridgewater-Raritan event! Congratulations to 1676, 5624 and 223 for winning! I also really liked team 25's robot, they took the already fantastic robot they had at Hatboro and added an amazing scaling mechanism. Also congratulations to 225, 1640 and 1391 for winning Westtown. The Westtown roster looked very challenging, and I look forward to watching the webcast recording. Finally, congratulations to 11 for winning the Chairman's Award in South Florida! Quote:
I also think it comes down to FIRST Mid-Atlantic being given discretion to give points slots to any team they want, so they can skip over waitlist teams when giving out points slots. They can't do the same for awards. EDIT: I'm actually not sure if FIRST Mid-Atlantic can skip over waitlist teams for points slots, I thought that is what happened in 2014, but I was mistaken. There was a very complicated chain of events in 2014 that Ryan summarizes here. |

Congratulations to the winning alliance at Bridgewater of 1676, 5624, and 223! Those were some intense finals matches; you certainly earned your banner! Congratulations to 1676 on EI and 869 on Chairman's Award. I had no idea 869 had such an impressive outreach program! A thank you to teams 25, 3340, and 555 for being a part of 1257's first ever #1 alliance!

Congratulations to 1676, 5624, and 223 for winning Bridgewater! I'm looking forward to watching how the competition went down.
We are looking forward to playing with many of the best New Jersey teams for the first time this year at MAR Champs. Based on the defense we saw during the playoff rounds at Westtown, the playoff rounds are going to be insane. There were 3 or 4 good low goal scoring robots with quality driving that didn't get picked. |
Re: 2016 MAR Season
With week 5 in the bag, I've updated my unofficial 2016 MAR Ranking Google Doc: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing. I will note that it does differ from the official FIRST Rankings in regards to Team 225's ranking points. The official FIRST Rankings show them having a total of 145 points, while at their two districts they earned 72 and 68 points, respectively, which only adds up to 140. I've messaged the FRC Teams email about the matter. Either way, 225 is still decisively ranked first - Congrats!

In order to stop teams from jumping you you'll want to cheer on teams this weekend that are playing for the 3rd time. These teams can't earn points and will stop other teams from earning points that they could use to jump you. You'll also want to cheer on teams that already have more points than you, since they won't be able to pass you. Additionally, you'll want teams who have won a District Chairman's award to get a lot of points since they will jump you anyway. The teams you want to do well this weekend so you can get a MAR Champs bid are: 103 (3rd event) 433 (3rd event) 869 (3rd event) 1228 (3rd event) 1403 (3rd event) 2180 (3rd event) 3974 (3rd event) 6203 (already has more points) 1923 (Chairman's) It seems like your team made big improvements in performance from Hatboro (when I saw you) to Westtown. I hope you qualify to Lehigh so I can see those improvements! Good luck! |

https://youtu.be/SmqR_KuUuxQ?t=4h40m24s I finished the last bits of that inspection while the cart was rolling to the queue. In a scheduling coincidence, they were paired with the eventual MAR Champs 316 & 225. That is 188 points you wouldn't want to miss out on. 5438 only had 41 district points last year so that gives you some feel of how few points a team can have and still have a possibility be invited to the Champs. Everyone on the bubble, make sure you have the registration fee ready in an account in case you get a late call. It was a fun story to go from registered to competing in such a short time (students were literally pulled out of classrooms), but hopefully we will not have as many late declines this year. |

Just FYI, I can now officially say that Team 3974, E=mCD, will not be attending Montgomery. Taking their place will be Team 423, the Simple Machines. It sure was a crazy weekend! I'd like to thank our fantastic alliance partners 56 and 41! They were incredible. I also need to thank our scouts for finding those teams, they really did an unbelievable job. I also want to draw attention to an ingenious defense selection made by our finals oppenents (222, 190 and 6203). For the finals they had us face the rough terrain instead of the rock wall (which nearly all alliances pick, as the rough terrain is laughable easy to cross). Because of that, we actually hadn't run our rough terrain auto routine for the whole event (we faced the rock wall each time); finals 1 was the first time it was really tested on an actual field. That clever trick made us miss our auto shot that match (we fixed it for finals 2 though). Anyways, I just wanted to give a shoutout to an incredibly clever tactic that cost us 10 points in the finals. I was impressed with the changes 5684 made for Montgomery. They completely remade and greatly improved their collector, and added a cdf auto routine! It's incredible that this second year team has been an alliance captain at three out of their four district events in team history. Anyway, here are the top 60 teams that will receive invites to MAR Champs. This is going to be such a crazy event! Code:

Running through the numbers--it looks like for playoff rounds, it is likely that the 16th pick will be able to shoot well, scale, or just be really, really good at driving/low goaling. The field keeps getting deeper at every event as teams get better at shooting and scaling. There will be many good robots that go unpicked.
Speaking of good robots, the range from 60-67 on the rankings is loaded with teams who either improved drastically between events or got stuck multiple times on the back half of the draft. I wonder if we will see any teams decline the invitation, and some of these teams could make it in. |

Hm, the FIRST website was updated this morning to list the 60 registered teams for the MAR Championship.
Can't imagine it's completely accurate though, since two of the teams are not actually MAR teams (1671 and 4594). Perhaps typos? Looks like 1676 is a qualifier but not listed as registered. http://www.firstinspires.org/team-ev...event?id=17365 |

Oddly it looks like they took off the MAR Champs "Qualifying" label from all teams on the ranking site here: http://frc-districtrankings.firstinspires.org/2016/MAR; don't know what that's about. Also, only 55 teams are shown as registered here: http://www.firstinspires.org/team-ev...event?id=17365 (is this due to the fact that only 55 teams were scheduled to compete originally rather than 60?). There must have been one additional decline besides 6226 and 219, because 4575 (the 62nd ranked team) is now shown as registered. Anyone know of any other declines? Only 3 declines this year is nothing when compared to last year's 13 DCMP declines.
I'll be doing my best to live update my 2016 Unofficial MAR Ranking sheet at MAR Champs. Assuming no wifi, it'll be done offline on my own computer rather than on Google Docs. Feel free to find me anytime on Saturday afternoon to see how your World Champs prospects look (or feel free to download the Google Doc as an Excel file beforehand and work the numbers for yourself). Thanks so so much to 3314 for lending us a spare output shaft after ours spectacularly snapped in half in our penultimate qualification match, causing us to sit out for our last (it was fixed in time for eliminations, but I guess that was for naught ). And, thanks to all the volunteers for putting on another excellent event.

Personally, I was extremely pleased to see 225, 341, and 1257 win the competition. As always, congratulations are in order for all of the MAR award winners, but I want to point out that this alliance was a very special one to 4637. Each of these teams provided the BambieBotz with fabricated or COTS parts for our robot: 225: a milled hex hub for our ball intake at the SCH district. 341: A pair of orange hooks for our climber after we fell off the bar at the end of the match (we didn't end up using them, but the gesture was generous). 1257: manufactured the extra long toughbox mini output shafts for us when AndyMark was completely out of stock. Each of these three teams were an important part of why our season was our most successful one yet. I hope their selfless attitudes continue to permeate through MAR in years to come. Congratulations to Tech Fire, Miss Daisy, and Parallel Universe, and thank you for setting a good example for our team. |
Re: 2016 MAR Season
1712 had one heck of a season in MAR, and now that I've gained some portion of the energy this season took out of me back, I figured I'd thank some of the many many teams and individuals that helped us out this season.
First off, the volunteer crew at MAR Champs was nothing short of outstanding. I believe we were ahead of schedule for almost all of qualifications, despite cutting a minute off the cycle times. Very few connections issues. Special congratulations to the event manager, Eric Zygmont, on his Volunteer of the Year Award. He definitely falls into the "huh, what? They haven't already won that!?!" category of award winner. The teams were once again incredible, all season long. We received numerous parts and tools from teams at every event we went to. There's honestly too many to name here. In particular, special thanks to 225, 708, 1403, and 4342 for helping us with some parts at ideal moments throughout the season. And thanks to all the teams who expressed concern and offered aid to us after our robot crawled on his back during QF3-3, and ended up with smoking BAG motors. The outpouring of support to get our robot back on its feet was truly incredible. To all our alliance partners, thanks again. Every one of you was a pleasure to work with, and we formed some pretty potent alliances along the way. I believe 103 and 1403 is the only teams we've been paired with in eliminations before, so it was a treat getting to work with new teams. In particular, 4342 and 708 are teams we've faced off on the other side of the glass with in the past, so finally getting to be on the same alliance was awesome. It's a pity that both of you ended up having some drivetrain issues, but watching 708 rebuild an entire drive module in roughly 15 minutes was awe inspiring. Special shoutout to Cougar Robotics as well, as they were a class act partner, willing to cooperate and pitching in with anything we needed to keep pushing further. Thanks to all of 4637, 103, 4342, 1218, 316, 708, and 1403!! To the many "opponents" we faced in qualifications and eliminations, what a season it has been. So many great matches. I have nothing negative to say about any of our elimination opponents all season long. It was a litany of teams that I have tremendous respect for. 1143, thanks for a pair of real hard fought quarter-finals sets, in both Westtown and MAR Champs. The defense we played against you was born purely out of respect for the scores you could put up if we left you unchallenged. 75, no hard feelings towards you for the flip. Things happen quickly in the heat of competition, and its awfully hard to know exactly what's happening on the far side of the field (especially in this game). 5401 you guys really proved that you were an excellent scoring machine. Even with our defense against 1143 and 75, your alliance was able to pretty easily capture the tower thanks to your low goal prowess. I hope everything was okay with your machine after you fell off the bar in the first QF match. All in all, a red card is not the way 1712 hoped to win. We have nothing but respect towards all of your teams. |
Re: 2016 MAR Season
It looks like both 5624 and 1989 are now registered for World Champs. Don't know if either got in via waitlist or by MAR declines, since they were the next highest ranked teams after MAR Champs. Either way, very glad to see them both qualified, especially 5624, our winning alliance partners at both Mt. Olive and Bridgewater this year (and 1989 has a great bot as well!)

It looks like 272 has now qualified for World Champs via the waitlist: http://www.firstinspires.org/team-ev...team?id=357169

Re: 2016 MAR Season
I've gotten confirmation from 5624 that they received a points spot. The fact that 834 got in after 1989 was removed from the list suggests that 1989 and 834 also made it on points.

I figured that they, 1989, and 834 had all qualified via MAR point slots, since it would be too much of a coincidence for all three of them to get in off the waitlist. So the question is then, which two teams declined to give 5624 and 1989 (now 834) point slots besides 56 and 1403? It would be nice if the official ranking site was updated... |

C'mon you guys, you're like a half hour behind here!
Maybe you're slipping in your old age... (Fair excuse: I was on an airplane when all three of you made your posts...) |
Re: 2016 MAR Season
Qualification matches are all wrapped up, and here's how everybody did. MAR teams make up 3 of the top 4 spots on Carson! Pretty impressive.
