The only reason why 5188 isn't on this list is because they started in 2014

DJ, no. Our record doesn't support that, even with our pre-district state win in 2014. We're looking to change that this year.

I agree. 868 won 2 consecutive state championships, before districts, plus 2 regional wins in 2013.

My list of top 5 in Indiana in numeric order, not best to 5th best:

135
234
868
1024
1501

with 5188 an honorable mention. They haven't had the 4 years to show consistent results. Certainly the best young team in the state.

I'm honestly surprised 447 hasn't made at least a mention in the Indiana lists. They've registered wins in each of the last 3 years.
868 hasn't won since 2013.
135 - 234 - 447 - 1024 - 1501 (numerical order)

I'm surprised how many people are using unofficial off-season events (including unofficial "state championships") as justification in their rankings. When I was with 1732, other than IRI, we would always use these events to train new drivers and pit crew. The goal wasn't necessarily to win, but give students (and mentors) experience in new roles.

I certainly understand that point for standard off-season events, but a state championship, official or otherwise I'd expect teams to come with their best effort. I'm ok including those.

It's like in the NFL you can play in a weak division or a tough one. I'll take the tough one as it pushes you each season.
This is a "leveling" game if you have not noticed. Hard to be super dominate due to the defense unknowns and vision difficulties. A tough game on all. Fun. I love seeing top tier bots (and having them on our side of the glass sometimes).

Oh darn. That's not what I meant. If you do happen to lose (and give it 100%), you definitely won't feel bad about it. The best part about this event is that it's early, so the ramp-up effect will be in full play as well as there's a few opportunities outside of awards to qualify for championships

She probably means 4265. Tennessee is presently weak but growing.

3824 - 4 regional wins and one regional finalist, one championship finalist
4265 - 2 regional wins and made it to Einstein in 2015
2393 - regional finalist
4576 - regional winner
3140

Lots of young teams. Only 4 teams in the state 6 years ago and about 25 now. I really admire what Michigan is doing in terms of state support.

I would say that 3996 should be fifth. Even though 3996 had a VERY strong year in 2015, they're 2014, 2013 and 2012 seasons weren't quite as strong. I just saw they're (3996) reveal for this season and I am certain that the are headed for another great season!

In SamcFuchs defense, that list seems to be based on 2015 alone. We were far from top 5 last year.

Rebecca Pelzer 01-03-2016 10:38

Re: Top 5 teams for your state over the last 4 years

To be as un-biased as possible, I went with exact rankings and winner/finalists over 2015 and 2014. (As some teams were great a long time ago and have since lost decent funding, among other things.)

Anyway, here's my list for Alabama:
1. 3959 - 4 (2015)
2. 4092 - 7 (2014; not competing in 2016)
3. 34 - 9 (2015)
4. 3139 - 10 (2015; not competing in 2016)
5. 538 - 11 (2015)

The number to the right is their top rank over 2014-2015 and the number in parenthesis is when they achieved that rank.

(to back up the ranking of my team, we're the only team from Alabama to make it to the championship in a few years)

And, now, here's my personal list based entirely on favouritism:
1. 3959
2. 34
3. 442
4. 538
5. 5858 (for good measure; they're rookies and I feel like they're really going somewhere in the coming years!)

Re: Top 5 teams for your state over the last 4 years

For the teams that are now in the newly-formed Chesapeake District, I'd probably give the following rankings:

1. 2363 Triple Helix (Virginia): 2 regional wins in 2015; 1 regional win and 1 semifinalist in 2014 (also World Champs, but they aren't on record as playing any matches in the eliminations); 1 finalist in 2013

2. 1629 Garrett Coalition (Maryland): 1 win and 1 quarterfinalist in 2015; 1 win and 1 quarterfinalist in 2014 (though they probably would've done better if we hadn't picked them); 1 finalist in 2013

3. 836 The RoboBees (Maryland): 1 regional finalist, and quarterfinalist at Archimedes in 2015; 1 regional win, 1 regional finalist, and quarterfinalist at Galileo in 2014; 1 finalist in 2013

4. 384 Sparky (Virginia): 1 regional win and Galileo finalists in 2015; 1 regional win in 2014. That's all more impressive considering they've only gone to one regional.

Correction to that, we were on the Galileo winning alliance, not World Champs. But, thank you for the shout out.

I know I'm late, but I figured I'd add my own list of California teams to the existing ones. Counting only current teams and going by robot record (regional and champs):

California:
1. 254 (1 champs win, 1 division win, 1 division finalist, 8 regional wins, 1 regional finalist)
2. 1678 (1 champs win, 1 champs finalist, 3 division wins, 7 regional wins, 1 regional finalist)
3. 330 (1 division win, 1 division finalist, 4 regional wins, 1 regional finalist)
4. 973 (1 division win, 2 regional wins, 3 regional finalists)
5. 3476 (2 division wins, 1 regional win, 4 regional finalists)

Norcal only:
1. 254 (1 champs win, 1 division win, 1 division finalist, 8 regional wins, 1 regional finalist)
2. 1678 (1 champs win, 1 champs finalist, 3 division wins, 7 regional wins, 1 regional finalist)
4. 973* (1 division win, 2 regional wins, 3 regional finalists)
4. 971 (1 division finalist, 4 regional wins, 1 regional finalist)
5. 1671/1323/701 (1 champs win, 1 division win, 2 regional finalists; 1 division finalist, 1 regional win, 2 regional finalists; 2 regional wins, 3 regional finalists)

*Still not sure if 973 is considered a norcal or socal team

Note: Data includes 2012 to 2015 seasons only.

If we are doing teams overall for CHS, you should put 1885 on there somwhere. They have a consistently good robot, and most significantly, they are perennial chairman's winners. They are definitely one of the powerhouse teams in CHS.

Bkeeneykid, that's a great list, but I think 1108 deserves to be in that company. We won Crossroads in 2014 and were invited to IRI, finalist at Cowtown (one point from winning!). Then in 2015 I recall we were semi-finalist at Cowtown.

3. 1816: They’re what every local powerhouse team should be; they build very solid robots, but what makes 1816 stand out is there dedication for inspiring kids.
4. 2512: Another team that always seems to build high quality robots year and year out. I can’t wait to see what you guys built this year.
5. 4536: Being such a young team makes them even more impressive. They seem to understand the little things it takes to win better than any other team in MN. I have been very impressed with this team over the last couple of years.

I'm adding 2502 to the list after today:)

Unless I'm mistaken, there is only 1 active FRC team in Montana...

So my ranking goes:

Top 3 Teams in Western Australia (in no particular order): 4788, 5333 and 5663.

Mostly because we're the only 3 teams in Western Australia, but that part's not important :P

2. 1678 (1 champs win, 1 champs finalist, 3 division wins, 7 regional wins, 1 regional finalist)

4. 973 (1 division win, 2 regional wins, 3 regional finalists)
5. 3476 (2 division wins, 1 regional win, 4 regional finalists)

Norcal only:
1. 254 (1 champs win, 1 division win, 1 division finalist, 8 regional wins, 1 regional finalist)
2. 1678 (1 champs win, 1 champs finalist, 3 division wins, 7 regional wins, 1 regional finalist)
4. 973* (1 division win, 2 regional wins, 3 regional finalists)
4. 971 (1 division finalist, 4 regional wins, 1 regional finalist)
5. 1671/1323/701 (1 champs win, 1 division win, 2 regional finalists; 1 division finalist, 1 regional win, 2 regional finalists; 2 regional wins, 3 regional finalists)

*Still not sure if 973 is considered a norcal or socal team

Note: Data includes 2012 to 2015 seasons only.

I would have to put 971 above 973. 971 always faces either 254 or 1678, yet has 4 regional wins while 973 has only two such wins. 971 was our alternative #1 pick in 2014 and made the division final from the #6 alliance captain slot when the higher alliances made a huge drafting error.

My Illinois Top 5 (if you now included 2016)
1. 2481 (4 regional wins, 1 regional finalist, and a 2014 Einstein appearance)
2. 2338 (1 regional win, 2 regional finalists, and a 2015 Einstein appearance)
3(tie). 2451 (3 regional wins, 1 regional finalist, and Curie finalist)
3(tie). 1756 (1 regional win, 4 regional finalist, and Newton finalist)
5. 1625 (2 regional wins, 1 regional finalist, and a 2014 Einstein appearance)
*Bonus*
6. 4143 (1 regional win, 2 regional finalist, and a rookie Archimedes finalist)

My picks for the SC top 5 are:

1. 4451
2. 3490
3. 343
4. 1319
5. T 4073 - 283*

*283 haven't been around for longer than two years, but they are consistently performing well.
*4073 only does one regional event however they have a Palmetto win from last season and were an alliance captain this season.

I wouldn't put 4901 in the top 5 even considering our 2014 ORL win because we haven't performed well outside of that one event.

2996, Cougars Gone Wired
1619, Up-A-Creek
4499, the Highlanders

I was going to respond to this for Colorado, but 100% agree with what you said way back in February, save for one thing... I think 1339 should be on that list as well, after watching the regional this weekend.

159 has a very interesting cycle of progressively getting better, doing really well, doing not so well, and then repeating that. I think the biggest thing we could do better is transfer knowledge from outgoing seniors to the younger team members before the end of the season. I know that's something my senior class was guilty of not doing, and it definitely hurt the team the following year.

Agreed. 1339 has done a good job of building effective robots over the last few years, and they deserve a spot on that list.

I was counting 2012 to 2015 seasons, during which 971 had 4 regional wins / 1 finalist and 973 had 3 regional wins / 3 finalists. I'm not sure how I came up with 2 wins for 973. Counting is hard...

About 973 over 971 or vice versa: I sorted mainly based on stats because otherwise I'd be even more skewed towards teams I've seen more, and teams that did better in 2014/2015. Both are really, really good and the list could definitely go either way. CA has a lot of great teams, which always makes these lists fun but difficult.

Re: Top 5 teams for your state over the last 4 years

Team 254 - This is an obvious choice because their level success on the field and their scale of support off the field is very hard to come by. Needless to say, we would not be close to as successful at champs if it weren't for the Cheesy Poofs.

Team 971 - Another amazingly successful team with an astonishing record of helping other teams. We needed special custom parts, and being a first year team, we simply did not have the tools to make it ourselves, nor did we have the money to have it done professionally. Spartan Robotics came to the rescue by not only helping us make the parts in their workshop, but also teaching us how to work these extremely helpful tools and giving us insight as to what to purchase for our shop in future years.

Team 1678 - The Citrus Circuits also constructed a beautiful and well-made robot. You don't make it to Einstein on accident. Apart from that, they played a vital role in our first year as a team. Mentors talked to us about how to expand our shop on a budget, and even came down from Davis (close to a two hour drive one way!) to discuss logistics and ways to raise money for the trip to Champs. We are more than grateful for their support this season and we look forward to working with them in the future.

Team 1868 - Another wonderful team that is great at what they do. The Space Cookies have most definitely made a name for themselves in the FRC community and have been a huge help to our team. As soon our the team began, they gave us the chance to come to their space (no pun intended) and give us a little overview on how FRC works. They also have been one of the kindest and most generous teams to us and many other teams they have worked with. It's a pleasure to have such a strong partnership between our two teams.

There are many more teams that deserve to be on this list, but those are my top four choices.

+1.

Also, if we are talking about teams with with great track records both on the field and off, I have to add Team 1868 - The Space Cookies. They have won 3 Regional Chairman's awards in the past 4 years, and are one of the most helpful and gracious teams I have met. Very willing to help us out with whatever we needed this season, including putting on a workshop for us and lending supplies. This team has a Championship Chairman's Award in their future!

1) 4451, undisputed. Palmetto, Orlando, and Newton RAS in 2013, went back-to-back winning Palmetto in 2015 and 2016 (only three teams have), Palmetto EI in 2016, Palmetto WFFA in 2014, SCRIW in 2015, Orlando finalist in 2013 and 2015, and that's just the tip of the iceberg about those guys.
2) 343. They had a dry spell after a heap of silver from 2010-2012, but in 2014 they started being contenders again, winning SCRIW and parlaying that into winning the final Peachtree Regional and getting silver again in their subdivision at Championship. They just got silver again at Palmetto yesterday, and they should be a threat in Huntsville.
3) 1319. Won Georgia Southern Classic last year, six UL Industrial Safety awards in three years (they haven't played yet this year), and several other judged awards.

I'd say there are three teams that have a legitimate claim to the last two spots, but which two depends on the lens through which you view them:
* 3490. Two-time SCRIW champions (2013 and 2014), Palmetto 2014 finalists, regularly in the conversation.
* 4073. Palmetto 2015 winner, 2016 quarterfinalist, two technical awards.
* 4901. Orlando 2014 winner (probably a higher-quality win than 4073's, given the game and the bracket), Palmetto 2016 Dean's List Finalist.

I agree with all these and I would add 1876 Beachbotics, they, like 343 had a bit of a rough year in 2013, but they have been in the playoffs and done reasonably well since, no wins, but often on our radar.

3490, with some help from a few unknown teams (16 and 118), also won the 2016 rocket city regional and 343 was a quarter-finalist there.

Kansas only has 22 teams and some of them don't even go back four years, but I was thinking math would be the best way to rank them.

I just manually entered info from TBA to get ranking by Average Qual score and Ranking by OPR for the last six years. I've totaled it at four for the purpose of this thread.

Average qual score, the teams are:

1. 1810 Mill Valley Jaguar Robotics
2. 935 Newton Railer Robotics
3. 2410 Blue Valley Metal Mustangs
4. 1108 Paola Panther Robotics
5. 1982 Shawnee Mission NW Cougars.

OPR ranking:
1. 935 Newton Railer Robotics
2. 1108 Paola Panther Robotics
3. 2410 Blue Valley Metal Mustangs
4. 1802 Piper Team Stealth
5. 1810 Mill Valley Jaguar Robotics

Here's a link to my spread sheet. the data is on one sheet, the totals and my weighting is on the second.

Weighting was simply 5 points to the best team that year, 4 to the second, 3 to the next, 2 to fourth place and 1 to fifth place.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...gid=1095802259

Feel free to check me or extend my sheets if you like.

1) 33
2) 469
3) 67
4) 2337
5) 1023

This list does not do these teams justice, as they are also REALLY good: 314, 27, 548, 573, 68, 862, 51, 2834, 494, 70, 503, 2054, 2959, 3098, 1918, 3539, 1718.

I would have to disagree with a few of those. While 2337 is a solid team, I think that 27 has a more consistent record. Also, while it pains me to take 469 off the list, I think that their team is at the end of its glory days. I would replace it with 503, who has won Chairman's at MSC for the past 7 years. I've been rooting for them to be a Hall of Fame team (and shocked that they aren't yet).

And thanks for the shoutout BTW.

I completely agree with this especially with 27 being in the Hall of Fame during the 4 year record, but unfortunately it causes me to disagree with your other point

This one I disagree with because 469 had 1 bad year (2016) and it shouldn't counteract them being world champions in 2014. If you are looking at just the last year, 503 is clearly better but I feel being the only world champion from Michigan during the 4 year time frame 469 deserves their spot.

1) 2974
2) 1261
3) 2415
4) 4188
5) 1648

Not sure if the people for Indiana are actually ranking them or just randomly putting the teams in order, but in terms of consistency...

1) 1024: Its honestly shocking that a team can be so good this consistently in such a competitive state as Indiana. Hats off.
2) 1501: Similar to 1024, except they usually seem to play second fiddle to them. Really good stuff.
3) 234: Bit of a downer last year for their standards, but can't deny their ability. Easily one of the best, just last year.
4) 868: Not as consistent as the others, but they always build amazing machines, who, by the end, are able to demolish the competition.
5) 135: Consistently in the top 8 in almost every competition.
