I've had good service through www.powerpipe.com You will need a credit-card to order. The cost is only $8 per year. Under the nameservers part of the registration info, you will need to select "your own nameservers" and enter the nameservers that your hosting place has given you. You will also need to enter all your contact info. Hit submit or whatever the button is and you'll be flying high. It may take a few days to work though. Just make sure you have the nameserver info entered right and don't ever change it.

Also make sure your hosting account is still active.:)

If you write up a business letter explaining your team and e-mail it to several hosting providers, they may donate the domain to you. We did that with our website (www.feds201.com). We sent out messages to about 10 providers and got 8 responses. If you look, there are people willing to give you stuff. You just have to ask nicely.

Say that you will put a small link to the bottem of your page to their site. Thats what i did. Go look at a hosting list http://www.hostsearch.com/ and find some providers that fit what you need. (Ex: php, mysql, asp, perl, lots of bandwidth, large server space) Then type one email and send it to a main email contact for each provider. just change the name.

To a large provider, a little server space isn't worth a lot.

PS: Ask for domain regestration too. They did it for us for free. :)

Heh. I really hope you can afford to register your domain name...it's $15/year IIRC (that may be even a bit high). Don't ask too much...

http://www.godaddy.com is just $8.95 per year, and I've had good luck with them.

To all of you complaining about your school's network connection, know that you are far better off than me. My entire DISTRICT, seven elementaries/two jr highs/one high school, share a single DSL line. That's almost 10000 people on a single network connection!

How cheap is that!?!?!?! How do they ever afford a robotics program?

Wow...there are more kids in your school than all the people in my county.

The network is still really fast at the School, I haven't ever seen any speed problems. For hosting, take a look at: http://www.webhostingtalk.com A whole site of web hosts that want your competition. This was very helpful in finding the host I currently use now, http://www.alwayswebhosting.com/

Is http://www.megawebserver.com/ a good webserver?

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/

Thats a good place to read about hosts & see if they are reliable or not. Many people visit that board & comment on their good and bad experiences with website hosting companies.
