Homework

I have a serious problem. I stay on my computer all day long and I end up not getting my homework done. It is a horrible problem and my parents hate my procrastination. So do I.
Does anyone have this same problem? Any pointers on how to cope with it?

Aaron Lussier 22-09-2002 18:11

I have a schedule that I work on:

3:00-Come home

3:00-3:30 - Rest and eat, and check CD

3:30-4:30 - Play Stuntman

4:30-6:00 - Homework (with at least two 15 min breaks)

6:00-10:00 - Watch TV

10:00-11:00 - Realize that there is one more good show on and watch that

11:00-6:00AM - Sleep then get up for school

You probaly don't watch as much TV as I do, you can use that time for what ever else intrests you.

FotoPlasma 22-09-2002 18:25

I guess I can't really say that I procrastinate...

Procrastination implies waiting until the last minute to do something, but actually getting it done in the end, right?

sanddrag 22-09-2002 18:37

What kind of homework do you have problems getting done? I may have some suggestions.

Brant Bowen 22-09-2002 19:03

Homework

I have the same problems that you do dan. I just end up staying up really late and getting it done, or doing it before school the next day. The best thing you could probably do is to force yourself to not be on at all or not for so long, like make it impossible for you to get on (maybe go to the library and do your homework?)

Amber H. 22-09-2002 19:28

Hmmm....One thing that works for me when I start to let other things around the house slide in favor of writing (at the computer) is to tape a lerge piece of paper to the screen with a message saying something like, "clean bathroom first!"
It helps somewhat, unless I get a sudden inspiration and just HAVE to enter the plot twist before I forget it. Then I just rip the not off and the bathroom, kitchen , or whatever else gets to stay dirty another day.

As for homewrok....Ummmm......I never did homework (assigned by a teacher) until my senior year. That was only because I had to in order to be a member of an ap type chamber ensemble (had to have good grades). I discovered that if I created a calendar for myself that had a schedule on it, that listed assignments etc. I did pretty well. Up to that time, I was the student from hell. I would blow off all of the busy work, go read about things that interested me, occaisonally showed up (usually in my pajamas) aced the tests and listened to my parents convince my teachers over the phone that I wasn't cheating (I had already read most of the required reading and some of the textbooks before I was in high school-Okay, I'm a total geek). It was BAD! DON'T DO IT!

Even with pulling a 4.0 my senior year, I barely managed to graduate. DO YOUR HOMEWORK PLEASE!

mtaman02 22-09-2002 20:52

Just think u have HW problems now. But in a couple of years those HW problems will pay off. Getting u good jobs etc. If u have a question about a certain HW problem post and I can try and help u with it. Ummm. be warned I'm bad at math and physics so anything else I can pretty much handle.

To solve some time issues with your HW. Do all the easy HW's first get them out of the way first and then concentrate on the harder HW's. Thats what I did

Chris Nowak 22-09-2002 21:26

Yeah, I'm in the middle of a 6-8 page AP English paper right now, and I'm surfing Chief Delphi. Go Procrastination! Yeah, after this I have a calculus assignment, 3 massive physics assignments (he checks them all in one day but he gives us a week to do them...bleh), Japanese homework, and a Japanese Test. Yeah, Homework blows. I usually just procrastinate all the time and then stay up the entire night finishing it. It helps to drink coffee (so I've heard, actually, I stick to mountain dew) and not think about sleep. I mean, who needs to be awake for actual class? I suspect this will change as I go to college, but I don't think I'll be spared sleepless nights because of homework.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. BIG Help - do your homework with friends. Call someone up who has the same homework and work it out with them. Not only will you understand things better, another person will keep you on track a lot (unless they are dumb or procrastinate more than you). I know I get a lot more homework done when I'm with other people who are focusing on the same stuff.

Another thing is to take classes which are appropriate for your level of intelligence. Don't take regular geometry if you can get into honors. You are much more likely to blow off homework if you know you won't learn or if it is just busy work. I know that when I was in that regular Geometry class, I blew off almost all the assignments but aced all the tests, and ended up with a grade that was not-so-good. Try to get teachers you like, too, cuz they can inspire you to actually take an interest in some things.

Hope this helps.

[edit] Hmmm Its only 10:30...I think I'll watch some Ayashi no Ceres before finishing my english paper....

Yan Wang 22-09-2002 21:58

i'm online all day... get home at 3:30 (our buses all late cause a bridge is under some more construction)... I eat food (no lunch) and then i check email, my utopia account, nytimes, and read some comics from the day. then i'll just chill/exercise till 6, dinner, then do some violin. i'll start hw around like 7-8 and get done around 12 or so since i don't really focus.

Stephanie 22-09-2002 22:11

i have a really hard time just sitting down to do my hw. i usually come home, and go straight to my room (after my snack). i force myself to do my hw before i log on. if i do log on, i've worked it out with my friends that they don't talk to me until i've finished my hw. i pretty much go online to talk, email, and CD. after email and CD, with no one to talk to, it's pretty boring. i usually like to use my laptop to go online, instead of the family computer, so i have to wait til after 9 pm, when there's a slim chance we'll get phone calls

Ian W. 22-09-2002 22:38

i'm lazy, but i somehow manage to get my homework done on time. i procrastinate a lot, but i'm never up much past 11 or so doing it. in fact, i should be sleeping now...

the one time i did really procrastinate, i wound up getting the best grade in the class. me and dan (superdan) had a s.s. project on the mongols and china last year. so, of course, sunday, the day before it's due, we get together. we do all the work, and as we're working, i came up with a crazy idea of a picture with me, dan, and kubli khan. so, we took a picture of me and dan, and found a picture of kubli khan. we did some more work, and then dan did his photoshop magic. i'm sure that's why we got an A :D.

this year, i find myself reading the entire s.s. chapter the night before the test, which isn't good. but for some reason, i understand it really well, and i can concentrate on the s.s. i'm weird like that though.

the best way to do your homework if you must be by the computer is to do some of it, take a break, chat online, then go away, and put some light music on, do some more homework, and so on. if you're not that bad it works fine. if you can't stop talking, i suggest taking a baseball bat, and breaking the computer into itty, bitty pieces. or, just have your parents take the moniter or something. :p

Jon K. 22-09-2002 22:56

My schedule

Procrastinate til parents bug me enough to go and do my homework. I wish there was no such thing as homework.

evulish 22-09-2002 23:53

Homework? What is this...homework? Is that the stuff I do the period before the class? Or those reports being written while driving to school?

I do homework in homeroom. Reports are done late at night (normally the last possible night) :) I can't think of the last time I ever studied for anything at home.

Jon K. 22-09-2002 23:56

It's always fun to do the HUGE project worth 25% of your grade and you start it the night before at say 6pm and you have parents going everywhere to get supplies, etc. And you don't get done til about 1-2 am the next morning. FUN FUN FUN:D

sanddrag 23-09-2002 00:52

What's this homework business I hear of?:D

Anyway, I put it off too. School is for learning, home is for other stuff. Keep your grades up but don't let your homework take your life away (I made that mistake last year in 10th grade).

I'm currently doing Spanish 3-4 Vocab if anyone cares. <sarcasm>fun</sarcasm>

Brandon Martus 23-09-2002 00:56

In college, I would always do my homework at the computer. Bad idea. Always got distracted. I got it done-- but it took 3 times longer than if I were to go somewhere else and do it.

I found that when writing papers, I would have to take my laptop outside or in a room without internet access, or else I'd be working on chiefdelphi.com or reading slashdot or something, and not be doing my homework.

Oh well, those days are over. Yay.

I very, very rarely did homework in high school. I have probably done less in college.

In high school, I managed. In college, it gets you into trouble.

But, then, I don't fit in well with the school system. I never have.

Don't be like me, kids. Do your homework.

Ricky Q. 23-09-2002 10:48

My Schedule

6:00 Wake Up

7:00 Leave for school

7:25-10:47 2 classes

10:47-11:40 is my Permanent Robotics Pass "Work" Time which basically is slack off on CD / occasionally do work I forgot to do

11:40-12:15 Lunch

12:15 - 1:10 Commons = Play cards / occasionally do work

1:10-2:45 1 more class

When I work:

2:45-3:40 Go home and snack / use computer

4-7 Work

7-9 CD / Tigertbolt / Talk

9-? Talk on phone or watch TV

When i don't work I usually am home or out doing misc things, see I only have 3 classes a day (I love block scheduling) So I usually don't have much work, and if I do we usually get time in class to do it. :D

Catch-22 is the best book.

Ha ha!!! Wow you hit the nail right on the head there!!!

As for me I'll eventually get around to being a procrastinator someday!!!

RBrandy 24-09-2002 20:44

many o many times i end up going to bed not doing ANY homework and i get up a 4 or 5 in the morning to work on it but then i fall back to sleep and then ive gotta do it during 1st/2nd hour which is engineering or manufacturing (depending on the day) i really wanna get out of this habbit but i just wanna sit on the computer all night and read stuff on CD and just basically do nothing (i would relax... sit on my @!#@!#@!# all day... i would do nothing).

O CRAP IM DOING IT AGAIN TONITE

DanLevin247 24-09-2002 22:51

here i go again tonight. i've got a ton of math hw due on thursday. . .. but i am far to lazy to do it tonight.

Exact same for me. Math Analysis (next above Algebra 2) Chapter 2.1-2.3 to be specific. It's about Matrices (plural for matrix) whatever those are.

Kristina 25-09-2002 14:21

My friends call me OCDoan, which stands for obsessive compulsive Doan (my last name). So I rarely ever procrastinate, I know...its really weird. I think I was the only person not to get senioritis at all, actually my senior year GPA was my highest ever.

The one class that I did slack off a little was my calc class...actually most math classes. Here are my little tips:

study groups...with people who actually know what they're talking about and you won't be distracted with

lists...write down what you need to do and putting checks to what you finished is for some reason really fulfililng for me

look ahead...yeah, this will all pay off for college and for the future, we already know that. you can also look in the near-term future. do your one page of math tonight or 20 assignments the night before the test. the fewer nights where you pull all nighters to compensate for slacking, the more time you have to go out with friends and doing real fun stuff (not just surfing/IM'ing in which all those hours add up to where you could have done something much better).

Geez, I really hate to sound like mom but those are my tips because everyone always asks me how I can do soooo many activities and hard classes but still manage to have time to go out or not stay up til 3am doing hw. But alas, I'm in college now...so its a whole new ballgame.

I have a question

I've heard a few people say that they never did their homework in high school. I was just wondering what happens to your grades/job/college/life/etc. I plan on keep doing my homework but I'm curious, is it okay in the longrun to not do it? What happens?

ditto, i wanna know too! because colleges are getting harder and harder to get into nowadays and everything definately counts! i'm not saying you have to get into a decent college to have a successful life but ya know, they usually go hand in hand.

Yeah.... you can be like me kids, don't do your homework in college and keep taking the same class over and over again till you smarten up and take it seriously!! Let's see I am currently in my 3rd round of Trig. right now!!! (My wallet is crying, it's so lonely with no money in it!)

MikeFromTeam71 27-09-2002 07:37

yeah heres what i do to cope with it, i check my mail then turn it off and blast the stereo while i work. the way i see it is, the sooner im done with my homework, the sooner i can play on the computer. it works for me. :)
