Greater Toronto East Regional (2016)

With GTRE only days away, I thought I would get this thread started up. We're all super excited to compete with all the amazing teams here, and play some Stronghold. In particular, this year's roster has shown to hold some of the strongest competitors that we've seen at this regional yet, so I'm personally looking forward to the level of competition that we will be seeing this year. See below for the competition roster.

Definitely very excited to see the game play out. Definitely interested to see how this event shifts the dynamics of how the 2016 game will be played as the season progresses.

I would agree. The matchplay will only improve as the season progresses, but I think this event will help set the tone for the kind of matchplay that we can expect at future events, and eventually Champs.

I'm a little bummed that I won't be able to watch the livestream due to being at North Shore this weekend, but I'll definitely try to catch whatever I can. It'll be interesting to see if 2056 can keep their streak going with 118 + the usual powerhouse contenders attending.

I believe watchfirstnow.com uploads the quals and elims matches to their website after events, so if you want to watch them after, they're available.

And yes, it will be interesting to have 118 in the mix, similar to 254 back in 2014 at Waterloo.

Team 4939 is super exited to be there. Especially with suck powerhouses competing here. I'm sure there will be several really good alliances with 118, 1241, 1114, 2056 and 610

Such a stacked event! Gonna be a fun event to watch that's for sure... now will 2056's regional win streak continue with 118 coming to town?

So are GTR East and Waterloo the most stacked regionals this year? I'd say runner up would be Silicon Valley.

This day was really fun to watch - 2056 is looking crazy strong. I'm super interested to see how tomorrow will go, with so many top notch robots coming into alliance selection. Also - it's great to have Karthik back MCing!

And now we discover 1114's hidden features. Their robot was actually handling the livestream connection in addition to dominating on the field :ahh:

Why did I just see a match running where a team member ran onto the field and dislodged their robot. Is that not a red card?

That was some sort of "celebrity demo match" during lunch and the celebrity was the one that ran out onto the field. Still ridiculously unsafe, but not the team's fault.

mman1506 12-03-2016 13:22

The guy who ran on the field was a popular Canadian Comedy news show host. He was told not to before hand.

Did quals and alliance selection finish on time?

Karthik: "That score of 185 points ties the world record high score!!! That ties semis match 1 in... Minnesota???"

It is true, surprising and true. There were 20 points worth of penalties though, while the semifinal at GTRE had only 10 points worth of penalties.

With awards and wildcards, it seems that all the teams on both the Winning and Finalists Alliances will be making it to St. Louis!

118 generates a Wildcard by winning World Champs last year.
--> Goes to 1241, who won EI (Congrats!)
--> Goes to 1114, who is HOF
--> Goes to 2935!

That's pretty cool.

Great job to both alliances for showing how awesome Stronghold is for a game.

Re: Greater Toronto East Regional (2016)

It was a great event to take part in. 5036 was glad to make our eliminations debut, that too as an alliance captain. Congratulations to teams 2056, 118, 2634, and 746. Congratulations to 1114, 1241, and 2935 for being finalists, and playing against us in the quarter finals, it was inspirational stuff.

Special thanks to team 1075, for getting us a gear for our left side drive when an assembly issue caused it to fail completely. We would not be able to compete without their help.

Additional thanks to team 1114, for helping us diagnose the drive train issue we had, and for all the support all weekend long.

Did anyone happen to also record any of Karthik's introductions during Eliminations? I was volunteering at the time and so didn't get to listen to the usual Canada history lesson he normally provides.

Anyone know if 118 was able to use their "grappling hook" for climbing at all in their matches? I wasn't able to see attempts from watching the 2 finals matches up on thebluealliance.

My understanding was that they were having troubles throughout the regional getting the timing right on their grappling hook. I saw them working on it in the pit often (really cool setup in their pit with the high goal/hanging bar combo). I don't think they ever got it working. I saw several attempts on the Saturday, but none successful to my knowledge.

The bar was only there to test the hook shooter, it had a "DO NOT HANG" written on the side.

I think that the problem they were having was that the long end of the hook would end up hitting the underside of the high goal, bouncing it out of position and failing. I believe that they ended up fixing it, but I didn't get a chance to see if they put the fixed one to use.
