2016 World High Score

Week .5 and 1 were a blast and I bet you guys are all pushing for that world high score. As of Week .5 the high score was 180 points by 4451,179, and 1369. Week 1 the high score is tied for 185 by 5172, 2987, and 3267 at the Northern Lights Regional and by 33, 67, and 4003 at the FIM District. Congrats to both alliances.
I made this thread not only to update you guys on the current high scores but to leave this to others to update as the weeks go on. If there is a higher score out there that I did not mention feel free to post it in this thread. Good Luck to teams in the upcoming weeks and great job to those who qualified for the world championship in St. Louis.

It would be helpful to know the top score with and without penalties. Can make a big difference (both 185s were 165 without penalties)

I know a 170 was scored no penalties at northern lights by 2883, 2502, and 5232. I am not sure if there has been a higher one than that.

The top score that I see in all regionals has been 5172, 2987, and 3267 in semi finals match 2. It was 175 without fouls.

Zach101 07-03-2016 12:26

Re: 2016 World High Score

So whether 5172, 2987, and 3267 are tied for the high score depends on if it includes fouls?? Can the high score include fouls or not? Is it by 'law' that the high score can or can't include fouls or is it just personal opinion whether it should or not?

Considering the high score is meaningless (the true "best matches" will include some tight defense), I don't see why fouls wouldn't count

Re: 2016 World High Score

It is also important to note that high scores in qualification matches are more impressive than in eliminations since there are 40 extra bonus points possible in eliminations that are not available on qualifications.

Sometimes the best matches involves a high score.

Many long time FRC historians consider this match, 2001 - 710 point Perfect Score match, to be the Greatest FRC in-match achievement ever. Either way its a metric by which all other matches are measured by.

Fouls should count.
If a robot is hitting you preventing you from making a shot you would otherwise make, they why not?
There were multiple non-calls which were shown on webcasts of various regionals which could affect scores.
As mentioned earlier, fouls/defense are part of the game, and should count.

joelg236 07-03-2016 16:06

Re: 2016 World High Score

To clarify, I also agree that in general fouls are absolutely part of the game and are valid when comparing scores. You can just learn more about a specific match by looking at foul points (egregious errors by opposing alliance, lots of defense, etc.)

How is that match considered Perfect? It seems like more small balls could have been scored from the field, and the time multiplier wasn't maxed out (>=90 seconds remaining)

I remember some rounds from Ultimate Ascent where every disc was scored in the high goals (between both teams), autonomous mode scoring effectively maxed out, and climbing achieved, which seems closer to perfection that the match above

Re: 2016 World High Score

I agree that fouls should count in high score.

Foul calls influence game play -- that is why the GDC made the rules the way they are.

One possible example: GTR Central teams were called for more fouls per match than at any other event to date. Perhaps this influenced teams to play less defense, run faster cycles, score more, and earn more breach and capture RPs. Perhaps this is the way the GDC envisioned game play in Stronghold.

Re: 2016 World High Score

Fouls should probably be counted in high scores, but let's be reasonable about it.

The highest score of 2014 occurred in Quals 4 of Greater Toronto East. The red alliance's score at the end of the match was 420 points - that's a huge score. However, 150 of those points came from Blue Alliance foul points. It looks like the Blue Alliance accidentally inbounded an extra ball, which comes with huge penalties.

The question is: Did the red alliance earn those 420 points? No. They earned 270, which, although impressive, does not surpass some of the other great efforts from alliances in 2014. That's why foul points annoy me sometimes - they make it so alliance's score doesn't necessarily reflect the outcome of their own efforts in a match.

It would theoretically be possible to have three robots in an alliance do absolutely nothing and sit disabled all match, and yet win the match if the opposing alliance was particularly egregious with fouls.

Not counting fouls would mean that it was not technically the highest score ever recorded. They are just two different categories. Ultimately it's all just for fun anyways.

Other assumption I made: if there were two high scores, the tie breaker would be the opposing alliance's score. Call my logic weird, but a majority of the time it makes for better TV when watching Blue Alliance videos.

1678 971 5274 701 3669 5924 205 86 No Fouls

I am not sure if 205 is the highest 'no fouls' score. Obtained by two high shooters (971, 1678) firing from the outer works so no defense is possible. Watch out world, the California teams are coming to St. Louis.

Previously we score 195 without fouls twice during finals at CVR with 254 and 3970. 205 points is the highest without fouls currently.

You can answer a lot of these questions using a little bit of Excel-foo with the attached files.

Richard Wallace 28-03-2016 20:34

Re: 2016 World High Score

I don't know Excel-foo. However, just selecting column CB* in each of these files shows me that, through Week 4:

6337 qualifying matches have been played, with average scores 68.6 Red, 68.5 Blue, and high scores 175 Red, 167 Blue

1336 playoff matches have been played, with average scores 121.2 Red, 104 Blue, and high scores 214 Red, 190 Blue

----
*Edit: Ether pointed out that column CB is Blue alliance total score. Recalculated including Red totals in column AP.

Re: 2016 World High Score

Finger Lakes Regional:

Qualifier 54:
Red: 20, 2010, 1765 Score = 93
Blue: 5254, 3044, 250 Score =157
Total: 250

Playoff Semifinal 1.1:
Red: 2791, 5254, 2383 Score = 156
Blue: 639, 20, 1405 Score = 165
Total = 321

Even without the 40 for 2 breaches, the semifinal is an impressive 281.

[Edit] My team, 578, was involved in the second highest (lost by 3 points - Argh!):
Playoff Semifinal 2.2:
Red: 1126, 2010, 578 Score = 156
Blue: 3044, 4930, 340 Score = 159
Total = 315

[Edit 2] Oops, I thought we were looking at total score. Let me take another look for alliance scores.
Playoff Quarterfinal 1.1:
Red: 2791, 5254, 2383 Score = 194
Blue: 1551, 810, 4023 Score = 99
Total = 293

I'd just like to point out that the 194 was WITHOUT fouls, and no alliance member had a climb. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that alliance had what I believe was the most powerful high goal performance of the season so far, sinking 14 boulders including auto.

The 254-1678-3970 alliance maxed out at 13 at CVR, and 118-2056-2634-746 were hitting 12 at GTRE.

Shaker (2791) and HYPE (5254) were taking something like 8-9 shots each in tele. Combining that with one of the greatest steals of a 24th bot I've ever seen at a regional made for one of the most jaw dropping offensive onslaughts. FLR is always a good show.

Re: 2016 World High Score

I wrote a few quick scripts for finding out the highest scores. It handles High Scores raw, without penalties, highest penalties received, highest teleop/auto period scores and highest winning margin.

At this current time, the highest score was in Rocket City Semis 1 Match 2 with a score of 214. Without penalties, the highest score was 205 at Sacramento, Semis 1 Match 1.

Highest Penalties was by the Blue Alliance in MAR - Seneca in Quarter 1 Match 2, giving the opposite alliance 50 points.

Currently, the highest winning margin (discounting red card'd matches) is 141 points at GTRE Quarters 1 Match 1, with a score of 165 to 24.

TBA says 14 high, 3 low, but that's just incredibly impressive. Was the tower at -9?
We got the tower to -8 with 359 and 3624 in Q49 of Tech Valley, but -9 is even crazier.

14 in the high goal is crazy! 1619, 1011, and 4550 got 18 into the tower in Colorado final 2 for a tower strength of -10. However, 8 of the 18 were in the low goal.

I wonder how high the score would have been had there been defense. Incredible match, but the fact that there was no defense makes this match mean less to me than other high scoring matches.

In some situations the best defense is good offense. Note that in this case the losing alliance put up 171 points. I don't think there have been many losing scores that high in Stronghold, so far. Anyway, there was a bit more defense played in the MIKEN semis.

Congratulations to the #2 alliance, led by the Comets. Congratulations also to Code Red on another well deserved DCA.

The Average Joes had a blast at East Kentwood, as we did last year. Great job by the host team Red Storm, the entire volunteer corps, and especially FTA Ellen and Head Ref Nikki. We look forward to coming back again in the future, and to seeing several of the MIKEN teams ten days from now at States.

Losing score final match in Waterloo was 200.

I look forward to seeing the videos of those Finals!

Did either alliance play a courtyard defender while putting up a combined 1091 points in three Finals matches?

Oh yes indeed. Heavy courtyard defense with boulder-blocker robots on both sides.

I expect to see a lot of this level of play at Champs. My world high score prediction of 265 points very closely matched Q33 at Waterloo, 60 pt auto, 2 scale + 1 challenge, breach, capture, and 14/20 balls predicted in Tele.

What if champs evolves into having little to no defense? The way I'm seeing it, a defender has to stop at least a robot's worth of points to be worth not scoring on its own at champs. Especially when the third robot is likely to be capable of putting up a lot of points.

I doubt it. 3560 showed at ONWA that, applied correctly, defense can stop the unstoppable force.

Re: 2016 World High Score

I have a feeling that MSC is poised to beat the world high score. Already they have had a score of 190 in Q49, courtesy of 1023, 494, and 27. This ties the world qualifications high score put up by 1114, 2056, and 2702. MSC teams will have many opportunities to score high, with 204 qual matches, 16 octofinals matches, and the normal QFs, SFs, and finals.

125, 195, and 2168 just got 225 points (no fouls) in QF 3.1 at the New England district championship

1519, 230, and 176 just got 225 (including 10 penalty points) in QF 4.1

That match (NE District Championship Q3.1) also included the first (to my knowledge) 70 point autonomous. 195 got 2 high goals and 125 and 2168 each got a high goal as well.

That score of 257 included a total of 21 goals, the majority of them in the high goal! Tower strength of -13. Absolutely incredible.

Many thanks to teams 1519 and 176, two of the most professional teams we have ever had the pleasure to work with. We had a tremendous time and look forward to seeing everyone at champs.

Also thanks to 4055, 166, and all the other teams that helped us out with parts and support, it takes a village to make a robot.

See you all in St. Louis,
SS.

Re: 2016 World High Score

I had the distinct DISPLEASURE of not being able to attend the NECHMPS. But at least I relish in the fact the my favorite team, 176, did such a phenomenal job in contributing to the World high score yesterday. I did notice that they missed a couple of shots into the high goal. I will say that they had such a run of completed goals, one after another after another! Can you imagine the score if everyone of their alliance shots went in! All in all the NECHMP scores were consistently above all the other events this weekend. GO NE!

Very interesting graphic. To add some context, consider:

Code:

District--#Teams--CaptureRate--AvgHighGoalsPerMatch
Michigan -- 102 -- 238/408 -- 5.95
Indiana -- 31 -- 79/124 -- 5.48
New England -- 63 -- 150/252 -- 5.31
Mid Atlantic -- 60 -- 115/240 -- 3.49
Georgia -- 41 -- 28/164 -- 1.37

I think this helps explain the scoring difference among top tier (90th percentile) alliances in each region.

High goal shooting is the key.

Re: 2016 World High Score

I believe we have a new world high score for QUALIFICATIONS:

Qualification World High Score: 212 in Newton Q61 by 179, 708, and 1519

1 auto HG (unfortunately 1519's auto shot missed!)
20 tele HG
2 scales
22 total goals
+10 foul points

No defense played against the blue alliance. Interestingly, had this match been in eliminations it would have tied the world high score of 257 (+45 for breach and capture).

Nathan Streeter 29-04-2016 10:14

Re: 2016 World High Score

... well that was short-lived!

Qualification World High Score: 227 in Newton Q65 by 16, 2614, and 3620

2 auto HG
15 tele HG
2 scales
18 total goals
Defeated all defenses
+30 foul points

If this match were in eliminations it would've had a high score of 272 (+45 for breach and capture)!

So I see a 275 in Carver Quarterfinals 3 match 2.
Is that the high score?

Or does the 289/0 in Newton semifinal 1 match 2 take the prize?

Watching the 289 match was amazing in person. I would maybe say that it shouldn't count if the red card was game-related, but the red card was not related to the game and unfortunately took away from an amazing match. The wait to see what the referees were reviewing made most people I know a bit anxious to see what happened, which made everything even more exciting. The atmosphere was fantastic and this match was one of the highlights of the World Championships for me. I had tons of fun hanging out with friends on the team, meeting other teams, seeing some amazing robots, and competing. Makes me even more motivated to work as hard as possible to get back next year.

The highest score (without penalty points) was in Quarterfinal match 1-2 on Hopper with a score of 270. It was an amazing experience to be able to play on that alliance. 24 high goals!
