two robots

is it possible for one team to submit two robots in ONE competition??? i heard someone say that Bellarmine, has two robots in cal games...

sanddrag 25-09-2002 00:12

I think it went something like they built two identical robots, shipped one, and kept the other for practice.

evulish 25-09-2002 00:28

Sheesh. Why don't they give that money to another team that could use it? We barely have enough money to finish one robot :/

Greg Perkins 25-09-2002 09:37

It is entirely possible to enter 2 bots in a comp., team 177 did it at battlecry (come to think of it, that was an off season comp.) but they split their team up into 2 seperate teams, made 2 indentical bots, and played against each other in one match, let me tell u, that was cool, trying to beat your own team!

i belive truck town terror (68?) did that this year for an off season comp as well.
There are many teams that build two robots and keep one at home for practice. Of course the second is not done by the deadline, but it gets done soon after it so that the team can start practicing with it.

Jnadke 25-09-2002 11:33

Yes, at IRI Truck Town Thunder had a practice bot, so they split their team up into boys and girls... they had team 68, Truck Town Thunder, and team 998, Truck Town Lady Thunder.

Your telling me... battlecry that year was nuts... we ended up getting First place and last place... for some odd reason 177.5 did not get picked. Weird :) - but yeah it was wierd playing against my teammates.. but the good thing was either way we still won :)

As for entering 2 robots into 1 regional: no, you cannot do that... at least per team. It's in the rules, I believe.

You could create another team, but that would be costly. Then again, if you have enough $$$ to build 2 robots, I'm sure you could fork over $9000 for registerring another team.

Off-season competitions are a different story. Talk to the organizer and I'm sure they'll let you compete with your second robot. The more competition the better, especially since the competition is so scarce there.

Katie Reynolds 25-09-2002 13:31

There's nothing stopping a team from making two robots if they have the time and money. However, a team may not enter two robots in an actual FIRST competition unless they are entering as two teams (each team competing with one robot). Like JNadke said, off-season competitions might be different - talk to whoever is running it!

This was also done at the Kettering Kickoff, and strangly enough, the girls ranked better than the guys at both events...

Just because you can build to robots doesn't mean you have a ton of money coming into your team. From what i have heard, quite a few verteran teams are able to create a secondary robot for practice. RAGE had a practice and a competition robot this past year. We are also lucky enough to have a small practice facility DONATED to us. And it helps to have that practice bot so more team members can get involved in all the steps of the team like driving and things like that. Also it allows our team to have practices to see who will drive and who will be te human player and things like that. And then once that happens even though the ceilings are low it still give the human players and drivers a chance to work with each other.

Cory 25-09-2002 22:23

We made a second robot for practice with spare parts after the ship date. I talked to a guy on Bellarmine's team, and he said they are entering 3!!!! robots. He told me that they were fixing up their 2000, and 2001 robots and entering them also. I wish we had the kind of money and time for that =/

mtaman02 25-09-2002 22:24

2 robots one competition one team no. 2 robotos split the team in half and give it a different name 1 competition should work just find. it mentions it somewhere in the rule 1 robot per school per competition. think of it like this. NASCAR drivers bring 2 cars to the track a backup car and primary car. only one can be entered. if the primary car gets wrecked in practice you just break out the back up car and start at the back. FIRST should do this.

Jon K. 25-09-2002 22:40

FIRST would probably say that it was an unfair advantage to veteran teams who have figured out how to use the parts wisely to be able to create a second bot.

I am on a veteran team, and we still dont know how to use the parts wisely :P, no j/k, I dont believe that that is a issue, it is more of the idea to make the bot to work efficently

this is my teams 5th year...and we have still never made a second bot, or a practice bot. we have a 5 minute programming practice bot just to test things if we want...but thats it. we have always "finished" 5 minutes before putting it into the crate.

Kyle Fenton 26-09-2002 17:55

What you can do, is submit 2 configurations.

Basically your chaise stays the same, and you can switch your manipulator.

We tried it one year, but we just stayed with one because it was too hard to switch to the other.

Renzorocks 26-09-2002 18:45

we actually got to build 2 robots this year. We shipped one and we practiced driving and worked on some other details with the other one. We actually took both of them to every off season comp. we went to. It was a lot of work, but it was pretty cool having 2 identical robots

Renzorocks 27-09-2002 09:41

you guys were def. one of the best teams out there. It was such a rush going against you; hope to compete W/ u next year 'cause we never had a chance this year.

When you do that I always thought that it all parts have to be included in the 130lbs

No, you can have two separate configurations that can both weigh up to 130 pounds. The only thing that has to stay the same is the chaise.

However like I said, most attempts at this type, are not that successful.

Forumflamer 28-09-2002 01:53

hm....

Btw, im also on team 115....MVHS

I actually talked to the Bellermine guys, and one of them told me that they were using one of their old ones just as a display, and the other one in the CAL games.....their 2001-02, robot is very good....it managed to come in place 1st in the Silicon Valley games

Forumflamer 28-09-2002 01:55

oh yea...

btw, YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ENTER TWO IDENTICAL ROBOTS IN A COMPETITION, only identical parts. for example, back ups of custom made gear shafts, etc, etc, etc

Colin Bohannan 02-10-2002 00:04

Bellermine's 2 Bots

Bellermine (aka Cheesy Poofs) built an aditional robot over the summer for Cal Games (an off season regional in North CA). It was entirely student built and made to pick up balls. They talked with WRRF who set up Cal Games as got it OKed to bring 2 bots in. For acctually compition you would have to have an aditional team for two bots.

For the California Robot Games we entered our robot from last year as well as a modified version of our robot from 2 years ago. Our robot from two years ago had an easily removable arm so a group of kids took out the old arm, made a new ball picker-uper out of spare parts, made a few tweaks to the chassis, and entered it.

Too bad it didn't do too well.
