Iowa Regional 2016
Couldn't find a thread for the Iowa regional yet so I went ahead and made one.
This is going to be a great competition with several impressive teams! On a side note does anyone know who is doing the livestreaming for the event? |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Other than North Star where we're competing, Iowa is the regional I'm most excited to see. So many great teams in attendance, and so much online scouting to do!
|
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Team 171 is looking forward to our first event this year in Cedar Falls, and I'm personally very excited for the first FRC event in Iowa. It's awesome to see how FRC has grown in Iowa since I started.
|
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Team 2883 is very excited to be involved in our first regional outside of Minnesota or Wisconsin, and can't wait to compete with all the great teams. :)
|
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
My former team, Team 2410, is looking forward to attending the inaugural Iowa Regional. The competition is looking steep, both from teams that we have already competed with (Shoutouts to 1723, 1730, `764, 1775, 1810, 1825, and 2164!) as well as old friends we haven't seen in a few years. (This time shoutouts to 525, 967, 1208, 3284, and 3928. We miss you guys; come back to Greater KC. Leave St. Louis behind :P)
As for the rest of the field, we're excited to meet so many new faces and foster new friendships! Be on the look out for our trademark Silver Hats, and know that if you see someone wearing one, don't hesitate to ask for help with anything. Now, a few congratulatory remarks are in order: Camdenton 4H LASER, 3284: THREE Regional Chairman's Awards! THREE. Expect a visit from our kids, because we're still on the hunt for our first RCA, and your team clearly has this down to a science and nails them with a laser precision. (Couldn't resist. :D) Also, congratulations to your Brenden Barbour on his Dean's List Finalist Award, and good luck to him in St. Louis. Tigerbytes, 1775 Your team has come to be known as a force to be reckoned with. Nearly 10 years in the making, you earned another regional win at Greater KC, something I know your team has been itching to feel again since your rookie year. Your robot makes short work of the defenses, and can threaten a tower singlehandedly. Greater KC was only a week 2 regional, and I shudder to think what you are now capable of with 16 matches under your belt and 2 more weeks to practice. Crimson Robotics, 2526 Your very first Regional Chairman's Award from Lake Superior! I don't know too much about your team, but from looking at your extensive sponsor list on TBA, it sounds like you guys have built up an empire in Maple Grove. F.R.E.D, 2883 Winners of the Northern Lights Regional. Between your slow and deliberate crossings in autonomous, to your incredible intake, amazing accuracy into the high goal, and utilization of the protection the Outerworks provide, it looks like your team will be one of the front runners at the regional. #teamcatapult Rambunction, 4330 Regional Winners at St. Louis, and your first one ever. It's a feeling that doesn't go away, and now I'm sure you're gunning for a second blue banner. Gators, 5172 You've faced off against F.R.E.D. before at Northern Lights, and I bet this time you're out for blood. I wish you the best of luck in getting the regional win this time around. It's looking to be a tough field, but you've proven your team on the field, and that will prove invaluable here. It's only the end of week 2, and there are already 6 wild cards in the field! That's insane. Good luck, and the Metal Mustangs can't wait to attend! (Personal note, any update on whether the regional will be streamed? I'll be at college and won't be able to attend personally, but I'd still like to keep up with the team!) |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
We're thrilled to be hosting the first Iowa Regional. (It will be a bit odd to sleep at home and have a drive of less than 10 minutes to the competition.)
The team social should be fun. It's in the Wellness & Recreation Center, which is attached to the UNI Dome / McLeod Center. They have lots of stuff to do - like a rock wall, swimming pools, etc. Room for up to 800 people. |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
This will be an exciting regional for sure, I'll definitely be watching this stream during week 4. It's a stacked event with powerhouses from Iowa, Minnesota, and a couple from Missouri.
I'm rooting for 5172 to earn their first regional win.. they've built beasts over their 3 years as a team and it's surprising they haven't won a regional yet. |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Team 1156 is really excited to be competing at Iowa as its first event! Good luck to all teams attending, see you there!
|
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Oh boy 3883 is ready! But holy cow the butterflies in my gut are having a riot! It's definitely going to be a VERY challenging competition :yikes:

I look forward to seeing all of the exciting robots. It's definitely going to be a great event. |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Thanks for your kind words for the RCA recognition. LASER 3284 would be glad to share our story with anyone and look forward to seeing the silver hats in Iowa. Our RCA success is really about the LASER family and their STEM outreach at the community, state, nation, and international level. We look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones from the FRC community at the Iowa Regional.
|
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Next year there should be many more teams there that are actually from Iowa. DesMoines just passed a scale-up grant for FRC, which they are expecting to create at least 12 new teams, about doubling our numbers.
|
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
4536 is excited to attend the inaugural Iowa Regional. This will be one of the most stacked regionals I have ever attended, it should be a lot of fun.
Our team would like to compare our scouting data against other teams' scouting data after the competition to verify its accuracy and see how other teams scout. If your team can export your scouting data to an excel or csv file, and would be willing to send it to us after the competition is over, please PM or email me. I would be happy to run the same analysis on your data if you are interested, which could give you some idea of how reliable your scouting data is. I will keep your data confidential. Let me know if you have any questions. |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Just a quick update for the week -
Liberty Robotics, 1764 I don't quite know how I missed your team in my original write up, seeing as you made your presence incredibly known at this and all the other Greater Kansas City Regionals. Your team is an inspiration to all of the teams in the Greater Kansas City area, and congratulations on your very first Regional Chairman's Award. (Though I was very surprised to find out it was only your first. I figured your team had won it before.) Blue Twilight, 2220 Blue Twilight describes your weekend and then some. Your team did what most only dream about - you went to Central Illinois and came out with the trifecta! Woodie Flowers Finalist (Congratulations to Mr. John Peterson), Regional Winners, and (an early tip) to your winning of the Chairman's Award. Wow. There's a new top awards dog in town, and I encourage everyone and their families to mob this team and interrogate them as to how they pulled off such a feat. Note: Please don't actually mob them or cause them any harm. It's just a saying people. :) Priyanka Koratpallikar, Team ASAP 4646 Yet another Dean's List Finalist attending this regional. Congratulations on such an accomplishment, and as myself am a Dean's List semi-finalist, I can say that I am very familiar with the amount of work that you must have put into the program, and you should be incredibly proud of this accomplishment. Good luck to you as well in St. Louis. Out of the 53 attending teams, 24 of them have already played in a regional, and of those 24 teams that have already played, 8 of them are bringing Wild Card slots with them, so it's a high probability that the captain of the Finalist alliance may be hitching a ride to St. Louis regardless of outcome. Basically the other half of this regional has never stepped on an official Stronghold field, and most of the are using this regional to gear up for the next Minnesota regional at either North Star or 10,000 Lakes. However, five teams attending this event have never stepped on an official FRC field ever, so let's show the rookies why FRC is the best $@#$@#$@#$@# sport on the planet. I'm looking forward to keeping up with the regional via webcast (because college. Boo) and hope that everyone else is hyped up for the event. It's gonna be a wild ride, and 2410 can't wait to help reign in the inaugural event. Be on the look out for our silver hats that people have come to know and love, and know that you can ask anyone wearing one for help and we will be happy to oblige. |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
This is a stacked regional.
Game Announcing is going to be a blast! |

This year was especially bad. GKC, OKC and Arkansas were all the same weekend. Definitely made for some hard choices for teams to decide where to go. It's not like we (GKC RPC) did it on purpose, though. In fact, we scrambled to try to figure out if we could move to a different week, which would have required a new venue, but were unable to find a suitable alternative. Just something to keep in mind - we're aware of it and know it affects a bunch of teams in the area. |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
I've made a bogus prediction list for alliance selection for this regional because I got bored over spring break.. :o (don't take the list seriously though, it's just guessing)
Seeds 1-8 1) 525, 5172, 3018 2) 3130, 967, 171 3) 2883, 2512, 2526 4) 1730, 3928, 2220 5) 4536, 2175, 3184 6) 1775, 5576, 3026 7) 1723, 3284, 2470 8) 3883, 1816, 1156 Predictions: I think 525 will remain the dominant force at Iowa regional and will pair up with 5172 who will be killing it throughout the regional with their high goal shots. Don't count 967, 1775, 2175, 2512, 2883, or 3130 out though- they'll all have bots highly capable of winning this event. Some dark horses that may pull it through are 1816, 3883, 3928, 4536, and 5576- all these guys have bots that can play the game well.. lets see whether they can do some damage. Let's not forget the 2 Missouri powerhouses 1730 and 3284- They'll both be focused on improving their robot performance from their previous regional. Is it me or is it amazing that this regional has 8 teams capable of producing wildcards entering it.. even for a week 6 regional this would be impressive but for a week 4 it's pretty mindblowing. |

This will be 3883s first time out of the state for FRC. Robot number 6 should "hopefully" be ready after a few "tweeks" once we can unbag. Will this be the year that 3883 wins its first regional? Who knows. Besides taking First at the 1st MN state event, the finals match 3 of 3 is as far as our team has made it. A lot of great teams heading down to Iowa will be great to see how things play out! Cant wait to see everyone there!

Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Was looking at the event site and it should be amazing. We also noticed a possible issue, with vision processing. We see that that the windows on the ends can shine light onto the field. With that being said our auto that we have been working on could have issues processing the light and reflection. See picture attached. We have been trying to process the images in our common area but still pick up sunlight once in awhile. So might need to put our team up there with banners, or pray for rain and clouds. We will spend some time tweaking honestly.

Supposedly a huge winter storm is coming through southern Minnesota/northern Iowa Wednesday and Thursday. I hope this doesn't delay too many teams.

Re: Iowa Regional 2016
What site will the live stream be at if anyone knows? Also cant wait to finally get our robot out of the bag. I think our robot may have suffocated in the bag waiting this long.

Good luck to teams 967, 1816, 2175, 2526, 4818, and the rest of the MN teams! (Yes, I know 967 is from IA and 4818 is from ND, but 4607 loves them as our own!) And a HUGE good luck to 3026 Orange Crush (fellow Central Mn Robotics Hub mates) - give 'em hell! |

Of course, it was just a practice match and things are sure to get tougher tomorrow and on Saturday. Even so, it was a lot of fun scoring high with 2512 and 1775 this match. It's worth noting that we made 50 points in autonomous (three passes and two goals); not something I've seen happen too many times yet! The UNI-Dome is an incredible venue for the Iowa regional and our team is so thankful to all the hard-working teams and volunteers who are making this possible! Good luck teams! :) |

Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Well after 59 qualification matches Day 2 at Iowa is over!
5172 has been killing it throughout the day with their high goal shots and I think most likely they'll end up pairing up with 525 tomorrow who has been improving as they go along. 1775 has been keeping up with their fast low goals which makes them super fast/consistent at capturing the tower- it's no wonder they won GKC and they could even surpass 5172 tomorrow to rank 1st. 1730 has definitely improved from their first regional and is one of the better high goal scorers at this regional and if they can be more consistent tomorrow they possibly might end up on 5172's chart for the 1st pick. That's my brief recap/predictions so far of this regional, I didn't mention many great bots because if I did I would of paragraphs of predictions.. so I decided to slim it down. The rest of quals and elims tomorrow should be exciting to watch! |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
This regional has lived up to the hype with so many impressive robots! I have been most surprised by 4818 because though they finished 58th in their last regional, they are currently in 11th place. Not mention their unique design!

Gotta say this was an exciting regional to watch. Congrats to 5172, 525, and 1208 for winning it.
I also wanna give a shoutout to the 4th seeded alliance of 5442, 2512, and 171. I think this alliance would of gone to the finals if they hadn't faced 1st seed in semis. (tough luck for them to be seeded 4th.. right after alliance selection I knew that was a good looking alliance but it was a bumming realization they would probably face the 1st seed in semis) I was also surprised 1156 was picked so late by 4536- I seriously thought they would be picked earlier. |

Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Team 2512 had a great time at the Iowa regional. It was tough luck in semi finals but what a nail biter it was. 5172.. Great job. You guys deserve a regional win. You have made great robots every single year you guys have competed. Although we didn't make it to world's this year, it has been a great competition season. Thank you 5442 and 171 for great elimination matches. What a quarterfinals nail biter for us. The tie breaker was tied and we ended up making it to semis cause of fouls. Good luck to everyone that made it to worlds. 525 and 5172 you guys are gonna make it far in your divisions. The Daredevils are cheering for you guys

Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Congratulations 5172, 525, and 1208 on the win. Congrats also to 525 on Chairman's. Great playing with and against you guys in Iowa.
I also have to thank our finalist alliance partners, 1730 and 1723. We'll be happy to see you in St. Louis! The venue was terrific, loved the big screens in the pits and natural lighting. Nice job putting on a regional for the first time. The Iowa regional has a bright future. |

And yes, I'll admit that I was quite afraid to play against 5442, 2512, and 171, and they showed in our matches that they were a force to be reckoned with. It's always difficult to play against teams that are not only good, but are also some of your closest friends in FRC. I'm still in shock that we were able to win Iowa's first ever FRC Regional, and we certainly couldn't have done it without our teammates 525 and 1208, so big shoutout to them. I cannot wait for the world competition in St. Louis! :) |

Re: Iowa Regional 2016
I think it's safe to say that everyone who attended the Iowa regional had a blast and I'm so thankful for all of the judges and volunteers for all the hard work they put in to keep the event running smoothly.
With 2512 and 5442 scoring on that 4th seeded alliance, we really would have had a tough time beating them if it hadn't been for our awesome defensive bot (thank you 1208!) Congrats to the finalists for playing a great tournament and earning spots to the championships! See you in St. Louis! By the way runneals- thanks for the awesome photos! :) |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Team 171 had a great time at the first Iowa Regional. Huge thanks to our partners 5442 and 2512. 5442, you guys sure didn't seem like a second year team. You had a phenomenal robot, and I think you did an excellent job choosing an alliance that just seemed to mesh from the minute we got out there. It was a blast working with 2512 to put the blocker on our robot, you guys did an awesome job getting those frame pieces ready on such short notice. A trip to the finals would have been great, but I knew the toughest test was definitely going to be that number 1 seed alliance.
I have to give a shout out to teams 5172, 525, and 1208. You guys played the game so well, it was just too tall a task to shut you guys down offensively. I also want to thank everyone who made the Iowa regional happen, everyone who has worked so hard to spread FRC in Iowa to make an event like this possible, and everyone who volunteered their time to put on the event. It's amazing to think when I started Iowa only had 3 FRC teams, and now we have nearly a dozen teams, state support, and our own regional. I can't wait to come back next year. |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
1810 had an amazing time in Cedar Falls.
Being a first year regional, we were really excited from the beginning. The venue (McLEOUD center and the UNI-dome) made for an awesome time. Fair warning for interested teams for next year, there are a number of stairs from the stands to the pits, but hey, it's a great regional. Congrats to all of the amazing teams who moved on to championships, and every team at this regional. It was a highly competitive regional. 1810 would like to invite any team interested in our scouting system that attended Iowa to please email alexwebberdev@gmail.com or pm me. We are most likely going open source, be sure to include team number. Also, if you wish to see our data, email the above address or pm me. I will try to get you information in a timely manner. Saturday morning I fell getting off our bus, and the ER Diagnosed it as an ACL tear. I have a doctor appointment later today to get an official diagnosis, but if you are interested in seeing our data, please contact me. |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Team 1208 would like to thank teams 5172 and 525 for picking us, there were a lot of quality robots to choose from, we are proud and honored by the faith you placed in us.
On a separate note: After our last semi-final match Team 525 sustained significant damage. Watching their repair process I observed something that makes them a great team: the students, under the guidance of the mentors, performed the repairs in an efficient and timely fashion; it was clearly the student's robot, they built it and repaired. Of course, a quality robot like theirs does not happen in a vacuum, the team's mentors must have provided exceptional guidance and tutelage. This shows once again that The Swartdogs are a great role model and very deserving of their Chairman's Award. |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
I'll also add that the Iowa Regional was a well run event, and that I had a blast attending and competing! Congratulations to 5172 (Gators) on a over-due and well deserved first regional victory! Congrats also to 525 (Swartdogs) for the victory, but even more so for the Chairman's Award! I had a great time competing with and opposite your team!
I also would like to say that the Iowa Regional must have had the deepest and most competitive field of teams that I have ever competed against. As an example of that here is video of qual match 89: (thanks once again to 525) https://youtu.be/nnhHJRnsu8g?t=24m55s This match was particularly impressive, (or maybe it was just particularly exciting because my team did especially well in this match :)), because even though the blue alliance had both the 1st overall alliance selection (525), and the captain of the number 3 alliance (4818), and was against a red alliance that none of the teams were able to compete in elims, it was still an amazingly competitive match! The red alliance (of which none of the 3 teams were selected for eliminations) came within one boulder bouncing out of the tower, and having all three robots parked on the batter at the end of the match from achieving a capture! |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Like I posted earlier in the thread, 1810 has decided to release our scouting data! I have gone ahead, and posted the data, in raw .csv files, and in fancy charts and graphs (thank Tableau) on my website, at http://alexwebber.me/robotics/scouting/data/.
We were lucky enough to have 6 scouters scout the first 80 of 89 qualification matches, and had time to pack up and get our data printed off. 1810 also plans on releasing our scouting system over the summer. Please email me if you or your team would be interested in contributing to the (what will be) hopefully open source project. We will make an announcement when that time comes. Please note- Our data is weighted, then we average it out to find how many times per match. If you have questions, please email me at alexwebberdev@gmail.com. |
Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Alex, thanks for that data. It's really interesting to see how very different design and play styles compare. We, 1775 and Gator, 5172 couldn't have built robots much more different than they were. It's fun to see where each was really strong. One takeaway from this data is that we probably put more mileage on our low bar, low goal robot than anyone else. That was a lot of traveling back and forth.

Re: Iowa Regional 2016
Those scouting data visuals are awesome, thank you for sharing. This is something to learn from.
Thanks to everyone at Iowa for a great experience. Thank you Daredevils and Cheese Curd Herd for accepting our alliance invite and being so great to work with. This was only our 3rd regional event and first time as an alliance captain, it is such a cool experience to team up with people from across three states and work together so well. Unfortunately our greatest strength, our shooting mechanism which had been great all season failed at the wrong time and was not repairable in the time we had. This was a lesson learned in designing for quick fixes. Add that to the long list of things we are still learning as a team.... Not sure if we would have been able to out shoot 5172 but it would have been fun to try. |
