2046 robot stolen

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, so sorry if isn't...

My former team, 2046 bear metal, has had their robot stolen and their pit trailer ransacked after their win at philomath. If anyone sees anything suspicious on the internet that looks like someone trying to get rid of robot bits or tools, do look into it, especially if its in the PNW area. I wish the best of luck to bear metal in finding their robot and/or getting their practice bot ready for competition next weekend. If you want to contact them to help or because you've seen something, or whatever, their website is tahomarobotics.org

Re: 2046 robot stolen

I heard about the robot being stolen...bummed for Bear Metal. It's a shame, especially considering the success of the robot at Philomath.

Best of luck to recovering the missing items!

Post this info along with a picture of the trailer and robot to your Facebook page and I'll reshare it with my friends out in the PNW. I'm sure others would too.

Here's hoping for a quick and happy resolution to this.

Re: 2046 robot stolen

Hopefully they find everything soon! Glad there's a practice bot they can use if it's not found in time. If possible, could you post a picture of at least the robot on CD? It would help to know what it looks like in case it shows up somewhere. What would be the best thing to do should it be found at an event? I would recommend checking eBay, Craigslist, etc. for tools/electronics/the robot itself. A bit off topic, but this got me thinking: How can a practice robot be changed to a competition robot?

Good luck to Bear Metal!

Important Official Notice

Hear ye, hear ye, all fine inhabitants of the Kingdom of Bear Metal. The time has come to bid adieu to Xcalibear. O’er the past 2 days, 30 teams gathered in the battlegrounds of Philomath, Oregon where Xcalibear endured many rounds of fierce and exhausting competitions. At the end of the feuds, Xcalibear, serving as the gallant leader of the alliance with Apex Robotics and Stormbots, was victorious! Xcalibear was proud of the conquest, capturing the blue Event Winner banner, and looked forward to proudly displaying the banner in the Village of Collins, fondly referred to the “shop.” The physical battle took a toll on Xcalibear, suffering wounds, such as 3 bent axles, a chain derailment, ripped-off pneumatics and minor polycarbonate cracks. The peasants competently repaired the injuries in Philomath, yet Xcalibear was eagerly looking forward to a couple of leisurely days convalescing before preparing for the next battle at Auburn High School, a mere 6 days away.

Unfortunately during Xcalibear’s journey to bring the banner back to the Kingdom of Bear Metal, Xcalibear was snatch in the prime of life in the mean streets of Auburn, Washington. The Bear Metal chariot has been recovered, but location of its contents and of Xcalibear remains a mystery. It is an inexplicable, sad loss, but one that will not hold down the Kingdom of Bear Metal for long!
Sir Bearington, first in line as successor to the Kingdom of Bear Metal, will take over reign and begin official duties Monday March 28, immediately after school. Do not miss the inaugural ceremony and knighthood of Sir Bearington! Fortuitously the blue Event Winner banner was safely entrusted to Lady Alicia at Philamoth, thus the ceremony will also include raising of the banner in the Village of Collins.

Sir Bearington, although not yet attained maturity, has cut his gear teeth in the science of battles by serving as the practice robot of the Kingdom of Bear Metal for a couple months now and has even travelled yonder to the field of Skunkworks. Sir Bearington has the same keen autonomous ability and stealth maneuverability as Xcalibear, yet due to his youth does not display black and yellow bling. The stellar ballista, dependable defense defender and the hardy blue and red bumpers were safely secured within the cavernous Ramig castle and have been bequeathed to Sir Bearington.

May Xcalibear rest in peace and Sir Bearington competently lead the Kingdom of Bear Metal towards technological robotic domination at Worlds!

Wow, this is a huge bummer. Watching you guys battle your way through eliminations in Philomath was incredible. Your bot is easily one of the top 5 in the PNW this year and you guys proved it by winning against some of the best PNW teams at Philomath. It's a huge loss that your robot was stolen and I hope you can recover.

That is absolutely horrible. I know how much heart and effort goes onto those robots, and I can't imagine getting one stolen. You might try getting on the news. Good luck searching.

This is the first time I can recall this happening to a PNW team. What a terrible shame. If there's anything the Flaming Chickens can do to help... parts, CNC time, etc PM me.

Thank you for all the kind words and support. I have never been more proud of the FIRST community. I am told that KOMO 4 news is coming down to our shop tomorrow. This is definitely a huge disappointment especially after the win at Philomath but I have never been more proud of my team. Not only did they battle their way through an incredibly tough elimination bracket having to face both the number 1 & 2 alliances, but I am told their spirits remain high after this theft and they are determined to come back even better.

Beautiful machine! What a tragic loss. I hope whoever stole it learns to program it and ends up getting a finger or three sucked into a belt.

Team 696 would like to offer full CNC mill/lathe/router/plasma support to your team to help you fabricate any replacement parts to reconstruct this machine if you are in need of any assistance. We can have a fast turnaround and ship the parts to you. Please let me know.

Wow! Thank you all so much for the support. We will be busy this week building up our practice bot and I am confident we will be able to do this. A local news station is covering this and we are using it as an opportunity to spread the message of FIRST instead of get pity from the public. The only changes that need to be made on our practice bot is gonna be the hubs on our drive train and a more robust pneumatics and electrical. Our shooter and collector were taken off before packing in the trailer so we have those to work with. Code will be tweaked but we can definitely do it. Team 2907 had a majority of their tools stolen from our trailer as well as batteries. Thank you all so much and we hope to see you this weekend with a competitive bot!

Thanks to everyone willing to help us in one of greatest times of need. We know that everything that is happening is a huge potentially crippling blow to our team. However, we will not let this hinder our abilities as a team, we are simply going to pick ourselves up and keep moving forward, it is the best for us and is best for what we need to do right now.
We do have possession of our collect/defense defeater and our shooter from our competition bot and we will have our local news get our story out. Hopefully we will be able to recover whatever we can of Xcalibear. For now, we are going to simply keep going and compete with what we have, Sir Bearington, our practice bot.
It will be a hard road ahead of us and we are going to to take on this challenge headfirst and jump back into competition this weekend at Auburn High, then Portland and ultimately to St. Louis. We plan on doing what we do best and keep on going til the end of the season.
Again, thank you all for lending a kind word or a helping hand. We are grateful for what you all are trying to do for us and we will certainly let you know if we need anything.

Re: 2046 robot stolen

That's awful. Your team has a great attitude and seems to be pushing forward! Since you have a practice robot you may want to ask some local teams with spare withholding weight if they can bring in some items for you. R18 gives a little leeway as long as they give you permission to use things they bring in.

R18 At an Event, Teams may have access to a WITHHOLDING ALLOWANCE of FABRICATED ITEMS, not bagged per R15, to be used to repair and/or upgrade their ROBOT. The WITHHOLDING ALLOWANCE is a static set of items that shall not exceed 30 lbs. With permission from another Team, Teams may also have access to FABRICATED ITEMS that are part of that other Team’s WITHHOLDING ALLOWANCE to repair and/or upgrade their ROBOT. The WITHHOLDING ALLOWANCE may only be brought into the Venue when the Team initially loads in at the Event. Items made at an Event do not count towards this weight limit.

No offense, but this particular event type (robot missing, presumed scrap) would generally cause R18 enforcement to be "temporarily suspended" for that particular team, as long as HQ was notified. Also, they've got an unbag window.

There are protocols in place. They just aren't usually used because there isn't much cause to use them.

I am saddened to hear about this loss. My team is relatively small so the best we can offer is our best wishes. My advice would be to file a police report and to try to come back from this stronger. Best of Luck.

This is awful to hear, especially for such a talented and friendly (not to mention successful) team. Hopefully the robot can be found in time for auburn next week, or district champs, best of luck guys. If there is anything that we can do to help let us know.

nedwards28 28-03-2016 00:09

We are super bummed to hear what happened! I always get worried when we travel. It's too easy for a trailer to get hijacked. What's I find odd is it would seem selling a robot and the parts on the back market wouldn't seem profitable. The tools and pit items sure but, a robot? It's sad that this would ever be an issue. :(

Team 4980 is happy to offer help as well, even if it's something as small as a selection of nuts and bolts for the pit. Those things add up! Cheers to your incredible team. We enjoyed watching you online this weekend!

To our fearless alliance leader from the Stormbots - we are saddened by your news and willing to do anything needed to help. However, getting to know you a little at Philomath, we learned just how good your team is - you are already champions and we have full faith you will return in full Bear Metal form.

Re: 2046 robot stolen

It is not an R18 exception you want (withholding), it is a R16 exception (bag and tag rules). With no robot in a bag with a correct seal number, you will fail R15/R16.

What i would do is email First HQ with the following:

1) Explain the situation
2) Include a copy of the police report, or if that is not yet available, the report number (proof of event)
3) Explain what you would like to do:
a) use the practice robot for your Robot
b) Perform the following modifications in order to make it functionally identical to the robot that was bagged
c) Bag the robot by <date>
d) Use the following withheld parts for the R18 rule.
4) Request an exception to R15/R16 for the above due to the unusual circumstance.

Assuming that First e-mail's you an exception, I would then print out your original e-mail, First's email giving you the exception, and attach that to your lock/unlock form that has the current tag number.

I'm assuming they already called First. My team has called First (in Michigan) to see if we could open our bag before because of something before that we left in, or something odd like that. I'm pretty sure they would make an exception to that rule since their robot was stolen, it's not like they will be opening their bag to make their robot better. I don't think First will care, but of course they still need to check but I wouldn't be surprised if they did already.

Too bad your team isn't closer, I talked to a lot of my team and I'm pretty sure half of us, if not all, would be doing whatever we could to help you. I know all the team's in the area where my team competes would send help just because it's how the First Community is. Good luck with your robot! I can't imagine hown it would feel for somebody to steal your robot...

Sorry to hear about the theft of your great looking, and performing, robot and support materials. It is great to see your team's positive attitude in this difficult situation.

It would probably be a good idea to confirm that FIRST will also send a copy of any exceptions to the organizers of the Auburn Event and any subsequent events that your team may be going to so they will be expecting you and won't feel the need to confirm with HQ when they see your exception printed out.

Best of luck.

Update: We have been contacted by several news local news casts to do interviews and right articles on us. Our plan is to use the publicity to inform the public of FIRST rather than have people feel sorry for us. Komo is coming to our shop today to do an interview of several of our mentors.
Teams from all over are offering us parts and tools and thank you all so much! We ordered some stock and plan to have our drive train hubs machined and all the wiring checked and nylon tubed to be up to par for Auburn. Even though we are upset by everything, we have big plans to get this resolved and the practice bot will be ready by saturday. Big thanks to teams 5920 and 4061 who are bringing a meal for us tomorrow night. New batteries have been bought as well and 2907 is open to our shop and tools as needed.
Watching everyone reach out to us and offer their help is absolutely inspiring and demonstrates how the FIRST community handles things like this.

Great attitude !

A similar stolen robot trailer incident happened in 2013. 4603 from Mexico had their robot & trailer stolen before the regional. The team did not have spare parts or a practice robot.

Many of the Alamo teams pooled together to help the team build a new robot at the Regional and they reached the 2013 Alamo semi-finals !

This is absolutely terrible, we had the honor of being a part of an alliance with 2046 in Curie Division last year and they are a group of great gracious professionals. Team 5586 made sure to watch the live stream of our former alliance partners at their district event and they performed as superb as expected, so we wish them best of luck and hope that they can continue their trend of success with their backup bot!

Though this is excellent news, it most definitely puts another bump in the road as they decide which direction to go now. Even though team 5980 is a rookie team we are sad to see that the idea of gracious professionalism could be stomped on by a team that is jealous of your success. Stealing a large item like that is not a single handed effort and that is disappointing to see that groups of people would conspire to do such acts. We wish you the best of luck finding and fixing your robot.

It's unlikely that another team was the perpetrators here. It was much more likely that it was a common criminal looking to steal their trailer, without knowing the contents.

Glad you got at least the robot back! Doesn't look too bad, with the exception of the missing roboRIO and the condensation...:ahh: It will probably be repairable, I've seen a flooded robot come back to life after sitting for a few months. Don't power it up until you're sure everything is dry.

I also highly doubt that another team stole it. As Lil' Lavery and Sperkowsky said, it was probably someone who didn't know(completely) what was in it. They had no use for the robot, so they returned it. You could probably get their fingerprints off of the 'bot; maybe also check the surveillance video of when they dropped it off.

Whoever stole it also stole the tools too... Sounds like a common thief. A foolish one too, as I doubt the condensation washed off fingerprints (although there's probably too many on the bot to get anything useful).

I agree with you. I remember hearing a Nascar driver (one of the lower cups) in the past few years was staying at a hotel and they had a fairly nice truck outside with an enclosed trailer. The trailer was stolen and it contained a complete race car and a spare engine. I can't remember if the trailer was ever found but the car was found on the side of a road, still intact. People just steal things and when they actually get it somewhere and find whats inside, they flip because they don't realize what they actually stole. It's kinda hard to hide a stolen race car, cause what are you going to do with it besides scraping it out piece by piece. I believe the same thing happened with the robot, I'm just surprised they found the trailer and the person kept the robot. These robots are expensive but it seems like a trailer would be more useful, just switch plates, where a robot, what can you truly do with for personal use.

Never mind, Im use to my team's trailer. We are a small team so we use a sponsor's trailer. It like 16ft long so it's still a nicer trailer than we could ever afford to buy, but it's unmarked. I see why your trailer was returned before the robot, and they probably thought about it and realized they wouldn't be able to part out the robot without getting caught.

I think I know what you meant to say here, but any "good" teams wouldn't steal at all.

Hearing that this team got their incredible-looking & regional-winning robot BACK just made my day.

Team 5924 has been following the sordid tale of Xcalibear quite closely, and we've had more than one conversation about how devastating it would be to have our robot stolen. So many hundreds of hours spent. I'm pretty sure most teams would want a thief to steal anything else but the robot...

Extremely happy for the Bear Metal team. Can't wait to meet you in St. Louis and behold the reclaimed Xcalibear. Good luck the rest of the way.

For those of us that have marked trailers there is a pro and a con

Pro: Your trailer is easily spotted and you gain recognition
Con: Your trailer is easily spotted and people can guess what's inside

P.S. I don't know what kind of locks you guys had on your trailer, but if you didn't have puck locks, it'd probably be a good investment.

Anyways, glad you got Xcalibear back and healthy again, good luck this weekend!
